I should have learned after the Let It Be box set last year but I ordered the LP box set directly from the Beatles store. You'd think that would mean you would get your hands on it at least as quickly as anybody else but, actually, it takes way longer. Also costs more. Won't get mine until Monday so hopefully it's worth the wait.

Am I the only one in the world who doesn't care what the thickness of the vinyl is? I mean of course I don't necessarily want it paper thin but I've heard great pressings on quite thin vinyl and terrible pressings on "180g" so it really matters much more the pressing in my opinion. In fact, one of my linear tracking turntables has a lot of problems with 180g vinyl, the needle occasionally bouncing off the platter even when it is cued upwards. This is not a criticism of YOUR criticism of the weight of these vinyls, they ABSOLUTELY should be 180g if they advertise it... but I think the whole "180g" thing is basically a bunch of marketing malarkey anyways they just throw on every modern release so they can justify their collector worthy pricing. Can't wait for your review of the new stereo mix, and how the mono compares to the 2014 and originals of course.

I hate how 180g and 200g are now adjectives used to describe a record (not a "vinyl". I also hate when people call records "vinyls".)
I worked in record stores back in the day and we never referred to records in those ways. Just played an original super thin CCR record, sounded awesome!

  • @davidevans3175
    @davidevans3175 2 года назад +88

The "puck" which is the soft lump of vinyl that's dropped onto the stamper during the pressing process is 180g. Then the puck is pressed between the stampers with the vinyl oozes out the sides. That's to be sure the entire stamper is fully covered with the full thickness of the vinyl. Then the record is trimmed. The loss of 5 to 8 grams is due to the trimming. One could say, "then make the puck bigger to accommodate." Yes but you'd still end with with different weights at the end, because what oozes out and what is trimmed varies slightly. The records cannot be exactly the same, only the puck weight can be consistent. That's how it goes, nobody is ripping anybody off, in case anyone thinks that.

    • @EddieJazzFan

That's' kind of like a McDonalds 1/4 pound burger. It's 1/4 pound before cooking. In any case, if most finished records come out to about 170g, they should call it a 170g record, IMHO.

David is correct in pointing out that the 'puck' is 180 grams, more or less, when it is put on the stamper. The general record buying public is aware of this as well as the processes in making a vinyl record. Doing a 'weigh-in' of each disc albeit fairly interesting, is not necessary for determining whether or not there is any claim to false advertising to be sure.... IMHO

I read his essay last night. It would have made a nice magazine article, but he had nothing factual to reveal beyond his own personal journey of discovering the Beatles. I like reading pieces like that, but it doesn't really belong in the boxed set. Everyone has a similar story to tell. I'd rather, those pages been filled with further annotation regarding the history of the recordings. It actually was a downer to read the bit about Quest regarding the classic Capitol label logo as something for old people. He came around, but, that's not really what I'm interested in. Basically his schtick is that he's a hip hop personality who also listens to 60s rock. In one line, I said his whole essay.

180g Vinyl means the pvc 'biscuit' that gets stamped weighs about 180 grams. After stamping, each record has about 2 inches of excess pvc around the outside that needs to be cut off. This excess usually weighs about 10 grams
180g is a 'weight grade' of LPs, which are categorized broadly as 180g, 150g, and 120g

11:35 I think one of the reasons why they can't make _exact_ replicas of certain products is to stop them from being sold/auctioned off as the original release.
16:00 they based the typeface from the back of the cover. I also wish they used the Grotesque no. 9 (which, by the way, is also used on the 2009 remastered CD spines) throughout the book - Impact is way too common these days, being THE font used in just about every meme ever made.

There are various ways to tell an original from a later issue. With this release, for example the publishing credits here say 'Sony', which is a definite change (from Northern Songs or ATV). Another way that this could be done is that the pressing date (or imprint number) could be included in the runout grooves.
Back in the 60's/70's some Polydor singles and albums did this - a very good idea which Warner Bros (WME or WMME) later also used when pressing CD's for a while); or a simple asterisk strategically placed somewhere! (Or an 'R' to show that they were re-pressings?).
I've always thought additional copyright information and dates should be used - with the original and then the 'remaster' or 're-pressing' date added to it.
I agree it often can be so difficult to tell what's an original and what isn't, but there are some ways/signs this can be done, or made easier. [Seeing the names of Sony or Universal, for example, on a record are immediate giveaways!]. (As they didn't exist as record companies before 1989/1990 and circa 1999; so anything with those company names - or BMG prior to 1986 - means they can't be originals but later re-pressings!).

That whole 180g thing is just an overrated hype anyway imo. The records don't sound that much better just because of that. I think it's all down to the mastering in the first place. And if the pressing is sloppy, then thicker vinyl is not going to help much anyway.

It was recorded on reel to reel 4 track , so tracks were bounced down and mixed when that was done , thus is done to make room for more instruments, for example tracks 1 2 3 bounced down to track 4 now tracks 1 2 3 can be used again .
Peter Jackson made a way to take those bounced down tracks to separate them so they are individually remixed before they are all remastered. By Sgt Pepper George Martin was using 2 4track reel to reel to capture everything .
8 track reel to reel came next then 16

I had the same feeling about the black border on the front cover, although I guess that its association with funeral notices and memorials is forgotten by most people nowadays. But moreover, it also makes the spine black with a white title, which (in my mind) is entirely backwards and wrong for presentation on the shelf.
My only other nitpick to an otherwise outstanding set is that I wish the single were a 12-inch EP, so there wouldn't be an odd-shaped item in the box pressing unevenly against the LPs.

Thank you Andrew for a very informative 'first look'. Some really good 'catches' here - the lack of flip back sleeves was one. The font used on the book was another. The damage to the outer box was a third. After watching this unboxing video, I still am on the fence between the CD set and the vinyl set. This is a very helpful look at the new set that will help me make the final choice. So nice that we do have a choice - the set looks amazing. Many thank again.

I enjoyed your scrutiny session, it is important that the public keeps a keen watch on this aspect, we need to be sure we are getting the quality fitting the high prices.
Fans are already so dissatisfied that the surround sound mix was withheld, any further slights could spell disaster.
I haven't heard anyone else say this, but let me be first: It's not too late. The right thing to do, is simply press the surround mix onto CD, and send it to anyone who requests one. It would be excellent publicity, and would set right, the sad wrong.
I am looking forward to your further videos as you evaluate the Revolver box's content.
Like most other Beatles fans, I am puzzled about "Questlove". I looked up his name, he is a hip hop musician, DJ, and author. I didn't find anything saying he is a Beatles authoritative, but, maybe his piece is interesting.

I think the 45 sleeve is more of a nod to the original one instead of a 1:1 reproduction, which is why it’s a thicker card stock instead of cheap paper, and it comes out from the side than from the top. As for the 180g, that doesn’t really bother me much. With all the supply shortages going on, it’s hard to get enough vinyl so they might’ve had to cut corners in that department.

Re the weight of the records/vinyl. It would be better not to state it if isn't true. It's a bit like saying something has been remastered or is in colour when it has in fact not or is in black and white. Erroneous information can mean an item might not be purchased by someone who expects something to be something which it isn't. I realise the majority of people wouldn't be bothered but it is just something to consider, perhaps. If the information wasn't included in the first place then it's a case of nobody being any the wiser or finding fault with it, perhaps? Just a thought.

They arent lying about the weight, the puck of vinyl used in pressing is 180g, excess vinyl oozes out of the sides of the press which is usually about 7-10g being lost. It's industry standard, not just this release. It's a bit of deceptive marketing yes, but it's still heavier than a normal record.

As far as the sound quality goes, I was happy with most of it but, several tracks on the stereo remix suffered with Giles Martin's tendency to swamp them with McCartney's bass. Taxman and I'm Only Sleeping were particularly irritating for me with And Your Bird Can Sing and Good Day Sunshine not far behind. On the plus side, Eleanor Rigby sounds great.

Like so many other modern day reissues of 60s albums, the attempts to recreate the original sleeves feel halfhearted. They try to recreate the look of the original sleeves, but the "feel" (details, types of paper/cardboard, openings of sleeves, flipbacks, etc.) is off. This is far from exclusive to the Revolver set but it bothers me nonetheless, especially when you put the faithfully replicated 2014 edition next to it.

All health! In 2003, I was fortunate enough to purchase a copy of The Beatles e-learning manual. The program is called Guitar for All Together with the Beatles - Learning Without Notes. The authors of this disc are Kleimenov and Suchkov. This wonderful program, which includes, in addition to tablature, also the ability to listen to the original itself, sing to the organ (basic) and learn songs in fragments (with the appearance of tablature images at the right time on the screen). Tuning your guitar with the built-in tuning fork. It would seem that everything would be fine, but the program ends with the Rubber Soul album. The program starts only if there is a disc in the drive. Acoustic guitar yellow deck software shortcut!

It's always a little baffling to see them try to replicate the original artwork, but fall short on minor items that would be an easy fix. Okay, the flipback sleeves would have likely cost a little more to produce, but rotating the opening edge on the Paperback Writer single wouldn't have cost anything extra. When they are basically charging $40 per disc, it's a little cheap to skimp on the details.
I think it's a pass on the vinyl set for me. If I want to hear the remix, the CD version suits me fine. And I prefer to cherry pick what session tracks or alternates to listen to, instead of listening straight through. For the mono, my original 1966 copy (purchased from Andrew about 12 years ago) or my 2014 reissue will fulfill that requirement nicely! And both of those have flipbacks. 😄

I don't like the black frame either, but I'm not too worried about a few of the other details. How can the EP sleeve be accurate when EPs were never sold in green Parlophone generic sleeves anyway? And the EPs were side-openers, too. I would have preferred a 12" 45 rpm EP, though. As far as the weight is concerned, well, they shouldn't have said 180 g. Actually, I think 180 g is a waste of vinyl. In my opinion, you don't need more than 150 grams to have a solid flat vinyl record. All the original pre-oil-crisis records were around that value. at least as far as my knowledge goes (some 140, some up to 165).

I believe the "Revolver EP" in this set uses a replica of the original UK single. Which this is in effect, except it has a new stereo mix + original mono mix. So it's called an EP but really it's a single with two mixes of the A side, and 2 mixes of the b-side, so the cover replicates the original single.

Great vid as usual Andrew. On the sessions LP is the number under the word PARLOPHONE unique or does it move up with each pressing?

I'm actually sonically disappointed with the stereo mixdowns. Perhaps I've been a lot more attentive being as it is my favourite album but, for all of it's technical innovations in separating tracks, It's lost warmth and some things I found surprising that could have been better frequency boosted (dancing bass on third verse of Taxman for example) whereas, in other places things are boosted to a point that it feels more "stuck on" that a "whole" I guess my opinion was always going to be biased but I'll just have to give it more listens and see if it grows on me

#1-Mine had a slight scuff on back. Came from Chezc Republic…scuff was under plastic shrink. Cd box is nice tho. Good job on showing ! I really dig the vinyl presentation…the things that bug you of course we didn’t have here in the states as far as cover fold over flaps. That would bug me a little too.

I'm sorry but I had to laugh at Andrew's freak-out over the tiny scratch on the outside of the box. A black Sharpie would fix that right up, mate. But then again, I also don't picture myself spending $200 on yet another remix of Revolver.

A black Sharpie to restore the scratch on the box??? Are you mad? That would be irreversible.

He's right. It's not a museum piece, it's a phonograph record. Play the thing and get on with it!
