Brooklyn is a borough of NYC. Knicks are technically in Manhattan, but have represented the entirety of NY since the 40s. Most NYC residents are Knicks fans and not Nets fans. Knicks have been around longer and are more popular, so there are more Knicks fans than Nets fans and they’re practically in the same city.
Nets also have changed location a lot in their history. They started in New Jersey in 1968, then New York, then New Jersey, then back to New York again. The New York Knicks have always been in New York.
It’s a similar thing with the Lakers and the Clippers.
