  • Demystifying this simple mod that you can make to almost any amplifier you choose. Make sure to match your impedance when matching cabinets to the speaker out. For example, the Boss Katana 50 and my Peavey vypyr are both 8ohms so I was able to test both amps with each other's speakers using the speaker cable that I made. You can also go 16ohms from the 8ohm connection, never 4ohms. hopefully you found this helpful. I wanted to make it as clear as possible and easy for anyone to do. I used 1/4" female pcb switched jacks I bought on Amazon. $10 for twenty pcs. I used 12ga speaker cable for the speaker out cable and 1/4" mono jacks from Amazon as well, and finally 16ga speaker wire from Walmart...$6 for 30ft rolls. one black one red..they also carry 18 ga either will do. Leave your feedback and comments please. this worked for me 100%..it will for you too.

Does it work with the MK II 100/212, too? And what would be the difference with the wirering?
Very nice Tutorial! I´m on the fence buying the Head MK II or the 100/212 MK II.
The 100/212 is the better bang for the buck for me at the moment, but I want the option to buy a cabinet later on. So this gives me this option. BUT will it work with the 100/212, too? On the pictures I saw, the wirering of the 2 speakers is a litte bit different, regarding the ground cable, am I right? So how would it work in the case of the 100/212?
EDIT: just took a closer look to the picture and I saw it wrong. It looked like there are only red cables coming from the Amp and the black cable is only between the both speaker^^
Now I saw, black and red cable are coming from the Amp, but the speaker are conectet to each other. So in the end it is the complete same work to do, as one has just to handle with one black and one red cable again :)
    Thanks anyway for reading ;)

Great question. Theoretically it could work with any amp..but you'd have to figure out the wiring as in splitting the load correctly for the external...but I'm not sure how to do it for your situation. This is a perfect solution for those with combo amps. But it should work with any amp. But disclaimer, I don't know how to wire up for your needs. Sorry.

As long as you match impedance it should work

@@modscientist9793 Thanks for your reply! I have put an Edit on my former post, just didn't looked right at the picture at the first time. A second look showed, that there is also one red and one black cable coming from the Amp. The only difference is, that the black cable goes to one speaker and the red cable to the other speaker. Then there is a red cable going from one to the other speaker and vice versa one black cable from one to the other speaker. So it looks like + goes to one speaker and - to the other, and then each speaker gets the missing one from the other speaker. I hope I articulated it well^^

thanks so much ! i had my boss katana mini ,wired backwards, when you said right side ,i woke up and said ,hey i got mine reversed. i had the wires from the actual speaker on them ,so i reversed um and it works perfect! it sounds great through an orange 1x8” cab with a jensen mod speaker. so much louder! cheers bro. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫😹😹😹😹😂😂😂😂😂🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ to mount the jack ,i drilled a small hole and used the hand reamer from harbor freight. it works great and i had control over it! great tool for cheap . thanks again .ihooked the katana mini up to a 112 line 6 cab with a celestion 70 -80 12 inch speaker and its loud and mean!!!!i can turn the amp down . killing it!!!!

You're welcome and no prob. Easy fix. I did this mod to my Peavey Vypyr 1 as well. Works like a charm.

Great tip. My question is, if I wanted to fun another speaker cabinet (Mark Bass passive 2x10" cab.) and use the onboard 12" speaker, could I simple use a Y cable. So I would be coming out of my AMP (Katana 100W) with a single TS that breaks off into two separate Female TS that all speakers and (1) speaker box would plug into using their Male TS connector(s.) One is the onboard speaker that already has a Male TS that you can plug/unplug.
As it currently stands, if you unplug the onboard speaker, only one external speaker/cabinet works. I am not sure how this would effect OHM's and what not. Of note, I have tinnitus so I ONLY play at very low volumes (under 80dB's.
Any insights would be appreciated. FYI, I am doing this for a new Bass I just bought. I never played Bass before but it is actually making me a better guitar player. Go figure!

Does this enable using both speakers at the same time, built-in and the attached speaker?

Only one at a time. Internal or external.

@@modscientist9793 What about if you simply used a Y connector? Plug both into the Y part and plug the one TS male into the unmoded switch? You would get tone- just not sure about ohms and whatnot, especially at higher volumes.

@@MOAB-UT exactly, I considered that but the internal speaker would still be active. I like the switched jacks.

@@modscientist9793 Have you tried it with the Y- does everything work ok- any Ohms/Impedance issues? Also, why not just use the Y but only plug in the speaker, or cab you want? It seems easier than buying a new switch and soldering it. If I did add another switch, would it be better to wire the switch in parallel or series? My Katana has three female outs- each has different Ohms. Currently, the main 8 ohm speaker is plugged into the 8ohm input on the back of the unit.
FYI- I noticed you have THR on the bench. I have one too. It makes for a nice Bass amp at relatively low volume for practicing. This type of mod. is very useful for that amp.

@@MOAB-UT yes, good catch..I love the THR10X, what an amazing array of great tones in a small package. They should've done a 25 or 50 watt version of it. But as it stands, +it huge sounding for its size. The jacks were inexpensive so were the 1/4" mono plugs and speaker wire. I can't answer to your specific use parallel or series. I would think this is redundant in your case since you already have speakers outs...it's really for those that don't have one. I did it to my Peavey.vypyr as well. It didn't have a speaker out either..the cab has to match the impedance of the amp 8ohms..
