Distributor collects money for the Master Owner and Artist from platforms like Spotify, Pandora etc, while PRO collects performance royalties for Publisher and Songwriter from public performances, usage on TV, AM/FM Radio etc.
I'm a little confused and was wondering if anyone can help me. If a song is created by a band trio, do all three members of the band sign up with ASCAP or BMI? Or should all three members have their own publishing company? For example, my band has three independently released albums in the last decade, but they're all registered under the singer's publishing company he made up called Resonant Music. I never questioned it as I told him it was ok to put under his since I didn't have one and wasn't sure how it worked. Is there anything wrong in this situation? Should all three of us (drummer and bassist as well) have created our own "publishing companies" and also registered the same songs under ours? Or should we all just use the one company "Resonant Music"? Does it allow you to split up between multiple people even if you use one single company name on ASCAP or BMI? All of our releases are through Tunecore which pays to one account anyway which we all share. So far our band has made very little in streams or sales so there hasn't been any kind of issue at all. Please someone help me with this if you happen to know this type of situation! Thank you for your time!
So I have never seen the inside of tunecore. I use Distrokid and I collaborate often with my boy Focus. The first thing we ran into was setting up a split payout. once I did it correctly I am able to see that I in fact only receive 50% of the royalties for those songs. And when I heard his Distro balance honestly it sounds on point. It sounds like the Other 50%. However... I'm still wondering the same thing too because his catalog has his own songs as well. Surely they are earning him money too. Your situation reminds me of Wu Tang Clan. They Were the first group to ever sign a record label for the band THEN ALSO individually signed to majors as individual artists as well. See if your able to do the same things your singer is doing without jeopardizing the groups money Before you do anything.
If you registered all under one Publishing Company (Resonant Music) you should all have a share from that income if you decided to keep the publishing part. It depends if you decided to give away your publishing share to the singer or you just let the singers' publishing company collect on your behalf.
I have a question If I have my song registered with bmi and then I get booked for a show, do I have to tell BMI about this show ? If the show pays me a fixed amount for performing, does that money have to go through BMI ? I do not understand why I would inform BMI about my own shows, there is no money to collect for them there since I am getting the money directly from the one who booked me from the show correct ? Maybe I am missing something
I think the reason they brought this up is because fans or your team might record your performance then post it again later. That individual video or recording is also eligible for royalties after the fact. So if you already registered the set list your pro can get you paid off the views/ streams of that performance. Whatever finances you work out with the promoter for that event is a seperate & private arrangement between you and them.
The information you provide is wonderfully clear and to the point. Thank you so much for this service !!!
This is SO Helpful. Thank you guys!
GREAT CHANNEL ! Great info for all artists and indie labels ! THANK YOU !
Great info! Would you handle producer splits the same way?
Incredibly useful! Thank you so much! Just one little thing, I can't find the "Song registration check list".
Please someone advise me clearly. Where is my distributor collecting royalties? And where is my Pro collecting royalties?

Can I use my DBA ein number?
Can you guys do a video about the difference between a PRO and a CMO? I thought a PRO was a CMO but it seems that these are two different entities.
PRO is commonly used in USA meaning Performance Rights Organization, and CMO is mostly used as a term in Europe for the same thing
What is a collection society?
