    Two things: First, It seems I have some amazing timing as someone just did an interview with Scott that shed a ton of light on SB's story and development, and more importantly, It's been really cool hearing about places like Bullwinkle's, Main Event, and Family Fun Center. Yeah, the interview really cleared some things up. Steel Wool weren't told "here's the IP, continue the story, bye", they were told "I want you to make the next game in my IP, I won't tell you what the story is or ever was, here are some set pieces, figure it out." I get that Scott's entire success was founded on his vagueness and he was hesitant to show his hand to anyone, but…yeah, you gotta tell your business partners what's up. That plus the virus basically ensured a disaster, and I feel a lot more forgiving of the game now, it's one of those cases where the context surrounding the development really does completely change your perspective on the game.

    Honestly, I feel like the staff bots shouldn't even be in the game, as the atmosphere could have greatly benefited from the feeling of emptyness. It's a similar kind of feeling to being in a school at night; it's a place that is usually well lit and filled with people. It creates the feeling of “I really shouldn't be here” that's so unnerving. Of course, this would require that the other animatronics have better AI, so they would actually be a threat.

    I think it would be interesting if every time the lights went out for an hourly recharge section and came back on again afterwards, the Pizzaplex stayed a little dimmer, things got slightly grungier (animatronics abandoning their normal after-hours cleaning protocol so they're spreading around stains and stuff and not cleaning them up), etc. Start the game feeling all silly and wacky only for it to get darker as things go on, it could be very creepy and uncomfortable for the player to reach 6AM and this place that once seemed fun and inviting at the start is now dark and spooky.

    • @mesaplayer9636
      @mesaplayer9636 Месяц назад +4

      Narratively that would be a bit weird why that was happening now rather than earlier. Also I think they simply didn't want it to be like that. Maybe a compromise between the ideas would be as you go on your explore darker, grungier areas of the pizzapex. That way the walls are not suddenly changing when it's supposed to be a currently operational business.

      @cruisindownthestreetinmy6490 День назад

      OO! I don't know like, ANY of the lore so idc this is just an idea, but: Imagine the reason Vanessa is after Gregory is because Gregory somehow introduced some kind of computer virus into the Pizza Plex. As each hour goes by, more and more bots are malfunctioning, in steadily worse ways. The core four's (minus Freddy ig) once friendly "search for the child" mode/voice lures (like Funtime Freddy from Sister Location) become more aggressive, manipulative and they have less control over motor skills - basically like a zombie virus, sort of Last Of Us-y. The device or whatever it is that's introduced the virus to the Pizza Plex is on Gregory, and was planted there by someone intent on corrupting the animatronics, but when the virus starts infecting the whole building (which causes the lights to dim and things to fall and break and all the bots to go nuts and break shit accidentally) they go after Gregory to fix their mistake.
      Random idea, and not sure how much of the plot of the OG (which again, ik very little about) would have to be reworked. I'm a fan fiction writer lol.

    The ending of RUIN is comedically polarizing, story wise, because one one hand. A human intelligent animatronic assumedly not possessed, or at least possessed by an unknown character, is found in a locker room that appears to belong to mascot dinner that is not Freddy's Pizzeria. A locker room which also appears that the building it belongs to was meticulously deconstructed and the room was then entombed in concrete. So who, what, and why? But on the other hand. Good job Steelwool, the best thing you can do with an existing IP you didn't create, is to make something new that compliment's the original story while also being alienated from it.

    • @CharlatanWonder
      @CharlatanWonder  2 месяца назад +102

      Personally I rationalize it as with the existence of something like remnant and how a lot of the tech made with the original animatronics/suits was fairly straightforward, it's no surprise that someone out there knowingly or not also made evil, potentially possessed, robots. But yeah I'm gonna guess that how the mimic got into the pizza pit is going to be it's own big, convoluted story over the next few games.

    One thing I always notice with Security Breach is how it is cribbing a lot from Alien Isolation only tamer. Multiple enemies but only one "true" threat (Though Security Breach has three and the other enemies can't harm you), the main thing that tipped me off is the saving. Both use the same save point system with a "wait three seconds in an open area" approach

    • @Sopsy_Hallow
      @Sopsy_Hallow 2 месяца назад +11

      im not sure if its taking things from A:I or just has similar mechanics by coincidence. i mostly say this because most of the individual mechanics arent particularily rare or special, and also because if they used A:I as inspiration i think a lot of design issues wouldnt exist. the execution of the same concepts are rather different and considerably worse in SB
      the savepoint system is a good example of what i mean. savepoints arent super rare in horror games, and while the base design is similar (short wait, usually in semi vulnerable areas) the execution is so much worse.
      A lack of (good) visual, indicators and reponsiveness while waiting to save (the painful slow circle of hold to confirm is terrible design, even if the wait is intentional and its not just an overly long confirmation measure), fixing your view directly to the save point instead of giving the ability to look around a bit (which doesnt functionally help, but makes it a lot more scary and nervewrecking), a lack of in world explenation, bad UI etc etc are all points which would've been sorely obvious if they actually played Alien: isolation because how very different the result feels.
      and same could probably be said about other aspects it "borrows" too, which is really sad since afaik theres quite a lot of extensive documentation and technical overviews about how the more important features were done. it's clear that the AI of the animatronics is very bad, which is a shame since the AI of the alien is a very known thing they couldve borrowed from to make the animatronics actually work without needing 2 billion staffbots

    • @TheTrueBatBrain
      @TheTrueBatBrain 2 месяца назад +6

      @@Sopsy_Hallow Alien: Isolation just comes up to me because of the amount of connections and the save stations as dangerous areas rather than safe ones is very A:I. It does however indeed do all of them worse, either from them being sanded down a bit so they're less scary or difficult, or through general bugginess. In this comparison the STAFF Bots represent the other enemies like humans and Joes. However with no combat system there's less chance for the chaos of interactions to naturally bring in the Alien expy in the animatronics. Instead it's completely binary, you are safe until you interact and then an Animatronic is spawned and you are in danger mode

    • @Sopsy_Hallow
      @Sopsy_Hallow 2 месяца назад +3

      @@TheTrueBatBrain i think STAFF bots are a two feature thing and while some can definitly be argued to be where you'd put additional lesser enemies (humans and joes), the majority of STAFF bots are more alike a bandaid fix for the terrible animatronic AI. placed haphazardly allover the place, both too many to make any sense, and with terrible vision that they generally arent a threat
      things like the endos are a better fit for the humans and joes imo as they are minor regional obstacles as enemies.
      closest thing to that A:I has to the main point of the STAFF bots would be those cameras with alerts that exist in some rooms.

      But back then, different devs come up with different ways to render their world to work with very limited hardware resources. idSoftware with BSP tree(sorting a world mesh into render chunks), Novalogic utilizing voxels to render terrain(instead of using polygons), the OG Silent Hill team saying "screw it" and draped the whole thing in thick fog to enforce very short draw distance(and enhance the horror). And you should check out how PS2 era SquareEnix devs make incredibly beautiful character model textures, while only using a 512x512 pixel space. And Mario. Mario got the overalls, mustache, and hat design because that's the best iteration they got for a character design that reads well, and fits so well with limited color palette and graphics memory.

      I just completely ignore the books lol. With what is presented to us in the game Glitchtrap --> Burntrap --> Mimic. Glitchtrap is some rogue coding from some old Afton kid-killing animatronics, which then essentially emulated Afton, being his creation and all, then it brainwashed Vanessa, tried to take over Afton's old body (Burntrap. Side note: always enjoyed the theory of Glam Bonnie being offed first for the parts), then got burnt up and continues its mimicry and murder. Did I just give every theorist in the area a migraine with my horrifically non-book-accurate take? Yup. But with just the game information that is presented from Help Wanted through Ruin, this seems to have the most logical flow.

    FNaF Security Breach runs on UE4. UE4 is generally very single thread limited. I'd bet good money that you're actually CPU limited despite the low CPU utilization.
    You see the all the cores and threads of a 16 core processor can't help you out if the game isn't programmed to make use of them. Even so the extra cores are nice for productivity. Something a RUclipsr would greatly appreciate.
    As for ray tracing, it often comes with an additional CPU performance cost. It's often why some games simplify the geometry rays are traced against. Far Cry 6 and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora both do this. The BVH structure doesn't come cheap.

      Also, this is probably just me, but I really feel like they should have completely omitted the missing Bonnie story and made it a missing residents story. At least there would be more weight to what Freddy and Gregory are talking about, and would make all the animatronics more sinister once you know that. Like, holy crap, this enormous location is perfect for just snatching people, there’s multiple places to hide them etc. Plus, it would give more reason to Vanny being there at all, rather than “new rabbit character who stands there and does nothing except be mildly creepy”

    "You should never let the player get a good look at the monster"
    Silent Hill and Resident Evil would like to have a word with you, getting a good look is not the issue. It is the design of the encounters as a a whole that are the issue in Security Breach.
    In SH and RE the rooms with enemies were cramped or the enemies were placed intelligently so they were a threat often doing some damage to your health pool and in turn using limited recovery items. If you were to take the same enemies and mechanics and throw it into SB's map... you'd need literally 100s of enemies in some of these rooms.
    In SB the enemies are 1-hit kill with your only defense being running, and you often have large open areas. You can often easily spot and safely exist in the room with these threatening entities in turn reducing any of the horror. The only thing an encounter with them does is send you back to your save.
    Compare this to that Alien Isolation game where it had SB level threats and RE level threats, and in the SB threats the areas were cramped so you were not safe with the monster as you could not know where it was especially with the vents.
    Even in Amnesia a Dark Descent it uses SB style entities but deal RE level damage. You can get a good look at the monster and they are horrifying especially as you learned what they are.
    A good developer can show you the monster, a good developer can hide the monster, a lazy one asserts the player should never see the monster as a rule for most media because they couldn't be bothered to make it scary.

    21:34 I believe another game that did that well was Lethal Company with its Coil-Heads. They act like SCP-173 where they move when you aren't looking at them. However, they actually have some form of travel time like the Endoskeletons do. You can tell how close Coil-Heads are to you by their footsteps. They have rapid foot steps that rapidly advance on you, letting you know where they are. Also they have a massive weakness: the doors in the facility. The Coil-Heads take AGES to open doors. They take like 16-17 seconds to open one, and that's a long time in terms of lethal company. It is long enough to find the main exit, find a fire exit, and so on. Since it's a multiplayer game, Coil-Heads become less of a threat since you can have one person watching it and it will never move while the other does dangerous things like looting more and platforming. After they do the dangerous task, they can stare at it and have the other person do the task until they're safe (or found by another monster). It also has the massive weakness of stun grenades, where it will take them 24.38 seconds to recover from it.

    Did not expect to hear Boomers name uttered in this video, but it was a pleasant surprise! It's actually funny you mentioned Bullwinkle's and Family Fun Center in a pinned comment, because the Boomers location that used to exist about ten minutes from my childhood home was originally a Bullwinkle's and then a Family Fun Center before being bought out by Boomers! In fact, I think my location was named Bullwinkle's Family Fun Center first before the Bullwinkle's name was dropped, and just went by Family Fun Center, and then I think it may have been called Boomers Family Fun Center... or that might have just been what us older Boomers fans called our location, but I swear it was a thing! Sadly, I think the Boomers near my childhood home closed during the early part of the pandemic-- if not before then, as not a lot of people would visit there like they did in the 90s and early 2000s. I remember plenty of times driving on I-67 heading back and forth between Santee, El Cajon, and Lakeside, passing Boomers, and if you were on the side of the road closest to the building, you could see into the area a bit and see people walking around, playing mini golf, but by the time I was between 17 and 19, any time I'd take a quick peek at Boomers, it was practically a ghost town! Honestly, I was kinda surprised that it had lasted until 2019/2020 because they didn't have many visitors that I could see.
    It was always a bummer when these smaller amusement parks and places didn't last very long in my neighborhood as I was growing up, mostly because while Disneyland was my favorite place as a child (and it still is to some extent as a now 37-year-old adult), I lived in Lakeside - a little suburb in the east county of San Diego, about a 2 to 4-ish hour drive to Anaheim where Disneyland was, and even in the 90s and 2000s, it was still an expensive place for my family to visit, so I had to rely on places like Chuck E Cheese, Bullwinkle's/FFC/Boomers, The Boardwalk at Parkway Bowl (a little CEC/D&B type establishment next door to the bowling alley in El Cajon), Discovery Zone, and Marshall Scotty's for that Disneyland adjacent fix... but unfortunately, except for Chuck E. Cheese, most of those places shuttered because not many people were visiting them.
    Discovery Zone lasted about a year, maybe two or three at the most, but closed in the mid/late 90s. Bullwinkle's/Boomers changed ownership three times because low attendance was always an issue. The Boardwalk at Parkway Bowl is still open, although I feel more people are interested in the bowling alley than the play area next door.
    Marshall Scotty's, a mini amusement park about five minutes from my childhood home closed between '95 - '97, reopened for a couple of years as Frasier's Frontier before closing again. Then it was going to reopen as the Lakeside or California Speedway and was going to be one massive go-kart track, but that owner faced a few years worth of setbacks that caused it to never officially reopen and it was sold once again. It briefly was going to reopen as Marshall Scotty's once more but again, that fell through and never happened, and for about 10 - 15 years it was owned by one of the many churches in Lakeside, so it was private property and they desperately wanted to remove all the old, rusted rides and whatnot... but surprisingly, it ended up having a soft reboot as a year-round haunt called Scotty's Scare Trail. At first, it started off as a fall/Halloween only type haunt, and while I'm not sure when it went year-round, it's currently listed on Google as opening at 7pm tonight (August 4th, the day I'm writing this). I haven't been yet, but from what I've heard, it's done pretty well for itself.
    Hell, from what I've heard, a majority of the Chuck E. Cheeses around where I grew up have all shuttered because of low attendance due to kids' interests in these types of places have changed over the years.

It would also allow Helpi and "Greggory" give curious commentary as perhaps one is more familiar with the "pre-ruin" state and the other could be aware of the "post ruin" state; allowing the two characters to disagree or argue more about how Cassie should be traveling through the building.

    I don’t think I’ve ever once seen someone make the pizzaplex/boomers connection. I certainly didn’t know about it as someone not from Florida or California, that’s wild.

    I started watching for the security breach review and kept watching because of the grilled cheese recipe. Your passion for cooking and sharing the recipes is infectious. Well worth my sub!!

    Video was rad as hell, love hearing about these games from the perspectives of folks that aren't super into the series. One thing I noticed, I saw the songs listed throughout the video but literally couldn't hear a single one. If that's a bit in reference to your experience in the game not getting any music it's fantastic, if not it might be worth noting the mixing makes the music nigh inaudible through less than ideal speakers. (Like my pixel 5)

    Just wanted to say, thank you for teaching me about Boomers. Ever since the local mini golf arcade in my town closed down, I've been dying to find another place to ride go-karts. With any luck I hope to go one closest to me before I move out of state.

    That final bit: “your art is a reflection of you. By the very nature of its creation, and in no way do you deserve to be reduced to content. Art is sacred and it is worth fighting for. So fight for yourself by fighting against the content ification of everything on the internet.” in the video, you said that you felt that nowadays, the best description of the word “content” was something to be consumed mindlessly to make a number go up for the benefit of some suit, and I agree. I also think most content nowadays is only made as rage bait or to get a cheap laugh or scare out of someone, and the first part really made me sentimental and as a beginner artist, feel like my art is genuinely worth something, so thank you for that wonderful message and I also think is should apply to more than just RUclipsrs

    Good video, but one part utterly baffles me. You didnt like the endoskeletons? In a game with so many poor design decisions and glitches and all that, the first endo section was a breath of fresh air. Its such a tightly designed section i couldnt believe I was playing the same game lmao!
    Like you call having to turn away from the endos to push buttons poor design. But like no? I'm having a hard time even articulating my point here because "you have to make yourself vulnerable to progress" is a cornerstone of any good horror game right?
    Funnily enough too, that first endo section was one of the only times i could effectively use the cameras.
    Anyway, like I said, good video, but I guess I couldnt tolerate endo slander lol.

    It says a lot that Scott chose to hand the franchise over to a studio of Pixar alums who know how to animate fancy marketable characters, instead of a studio of actual game devs who know how to make an effective horror game.

    I don’t believe that if steel wooo had better conditions they would’ve made base SB better. SB had a planning issue, it was well beyond their scope and they included “cool” ideas for the sake of adding them instead of fleshing out other sections to make sure they’re actually enjoyable instead of annoying or boring
