    Two quick notices:
    1. Sorry my voice was kind of nasal in this video, blame my allergies.
    2. I chose not to use the swastika flag image in this video, to make sure it wouldn't be blocked in Germany, instead using an identical flag but with an iron cross in place of the swastika.
    Thanks for watching and leave a reply letting me know which flag you want me to do a video on next!

    As a German: You are allowed to show Nazi symbols in an educational setting in Germany. So it would be total fine for you to show the Nazi flag in this particular video.

      +Rick van Staten
      I wished they would remove the ban on wolfsangles, runes, swastikas, fascist and communist party symbols &c.
      Instead there should be more care and education on the way how people are instrumentalized and influenced and how you can expose your self opposite views to ensure you are not becoming a tool serving someone elses ambitions.
      Symbols like the swastika changed their association, but they can do so again. We should be able to reclame them back and restore the original association or create a new one.
      Buddhists and Hindus are still pissed, because of the IRC's decision on that matter.

    • @Warpwaffel
      @Warpwaffel 6 лет назад +16

      @CentralPerson: We don't take away our history, as was said already, in an educational context the Nazi symbols are ok. History doesn't disappear, just because you aren't allowed to wave the symbols of some criminal state or other around.

    • @fpsgod3028
      @fpsgod3028 6 лет назад +1

      Warpwaffel Yes the nazis were pretty gay but if you want to associate yourself with the nazis then you should be free to do so. In America, if you go to people's houses down south, you're bound to see the confederate flag in some. Also there is a nazi party in America. There are also statues down south of the confederate leaders that are still up. It doesn't matter if you disagree with someone's political affiliation-be it a good or a bad one.

    • @fpsgod3028
      @fpsgod3028 6 лет назад

      Oh yeah, can't take for granted that everyone knows who the confederates were. They were some (a bunch) slave owners that were against Lincoln (him being anti-slavery and all). (The south had a lot of slaves back then while most northern states had already stopped slavery. Lincoln wanted to make slavery illegal on a national level).

    Don't be afraid to use the swastika when you speak about the Third Reich! Even in Germany today it is no problem to use the correct flag when you speak about history, use it in a piece of art or as a criticissm of the nazi dictatorship. Using the Iron Cross when speaking about nazi-atrocities is an insult to the Iron Cross however! It is the symbol of Germany's armed forces today.
    So please use the swastika when speaking about the nazis! Germany is not Harry Potter and you are not forbidden to say Voldemort's name!

    As a german there is one thing I want to point out, technically the weimar republic didn't come to an end in 1933. In fact it was never called the weimar republic between 1918 and 1933, it was still officially the german empire and for germans it was propably simply germany. The term weimar republic is simply used to distiguish the democratic german empire (1918-1933), from the pre world war 1 german empire monarchy (1871-1918). Whith the nazi takeover of power in 1933 the country which existed previously didn't come to an end and was still officialy called the german empire. In fact the constitution of the "weimar republic" stayed in effect between 1933 and 1945. However, the so called "Reichstagsbrandverordnung" (Reichstagfiredecree) of 1933 suspended all articles of the constitution related to civil liberties and the so called "Enabling Act" of 1933 made Adolf Hitler a de facto totalitarian dictator. The term nazi germany is simply used by historians to distinguish the de facto dictatorship of the "third reich" from the democratic german empire (1918-1933) and the pre world war 1 german empire (1871-1918).

    Hello there, there is a little story about the two- headed eagle. Firstly the eagle was adopted as a symbol of the city of Rome from the very beginning of its foundation; according to the legends the people who wanted to establish a city (as an ancient Greek Polis) (those people could have different names either Romulus and Rem of Aeneus- depending of the legend). So those founders saw an eagle dropping an animal (snake? ram?) and the started to build the city there. Eagle they believed was Zeus himself, so the eagle became an emblem of the city of Rome and the whole roman empire afterward. When the Christianity came and the Empire was split into Eastern end Western; the West Empire started to fade and finally perished. Wile on the East (Byzantine) it became a strong empire. And christian too. Byzantine emperors armies also used eagle as a symbol of roman might. The emperors in Byzantine stared tom use a two headed eagle that represent bot the Emperor and the Christian Power combined. One head for the civil ruler, and one head for the church. The symbol became a mighty one, because the empire was mighty and lasted for 800 years. When Russians adopted the Christianity (Eastern orthodox) they adopted the 2 headed eagle and they use it today. When the crusades passed throu Constantinople and when the Venetians conquered the City, they took the two- headed eagle and its meaning to the west.

    The first two flags you did show were actually only used during the time of the Revolution of 1848-1849. Black, Red and Gold being the symbol for Republicanism. The Flag of the North German Confederation/German Empire (Black-White-Red) was indeed influenced by Prussia, since it was the hegemonial power in both entities. After the Revolution of 1918, the new Republic adopted the colours of the republican movement. The (former) political meaning of those colour combination is historically quite important.

    the black-red-dolden flag was first used by the german countries figthing together against Napoleon. It became later a symbol of the United Germany and Democrazy. For this reason the German Republic of 1848 (which didn´t last long) used it as National Flag. Later the Weimar Republic used it es referance to the revolution of 1848

    You forgot the mention the origin of the colours black red and gold. I will do it for you now, shall I?
    In the napoleonic wars there was a regiment of the kingdom of prussia, the lützower Jäger / lützower Freikorps. It had black uniforms with red stripes and golden knobs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%BCtzow_Free_Corps#/media/File:Kn%C3%B6tel_II,_7.jpg
    These colours were later used on the Hambacher Fest, a demonstration after unity and democracy for the german nation had not been archieved in the congress of vienna, and then later in the revolution of 1848/1849.

    • @Packless1
      @Packless1 7 лет назад

      indeed
      b.t.w. the reason for the black uniforms was, that the soldiers (they were volunteers) had to buy their equippment by themselves, and black cloth was then the cheapest...

    • @florianphilipps2370
      @florianphilipps2370 7 лет назад

      Another special thing was that every citizen of any german state was allowed to join the Lützower Jäger. Also, they dyed normal cloth black because black dye was the cheapest dye, gave these black clothes the red stripes and golden knobs so it looked at least a bit like a uniform.

    • @maxmustermann369

    • @Siegbert85

      Yes, but that's a mere theory, although a popular one.
      We can't know for sure why people came up with those colors for the Hambach festival. Probably it had something to do with the symbol of the popular student fraternities at the time which was red-black-red with a golden leaf in the middle.

    The Holy Roman Empire's eagle was single-headed as well originally. They changed the design in the 15th century. Also since the HRE in the middle ages was made of of 3 nominal kingdoms (Germany, Italy and Arles/Burgundy) there was a period in which the double headed eagle would represent the empire/emperor while the single-headed one would represent the king of Germany.

      Problem is, there is no compass. It is a circle. All of the symbols represented the people of eastern germany. A compass would represent something like freedom or exploration. Both of them not really wanted by the gouvernment.

    some additional info and minor corrections:
    1. The colors are actually black red and GOLD (not yellow)
    2. the flag of the German Empire stemmed from the flag of the northern german alliance (Norddeutscher Bund) which was created by prussia after the austro-prussian brothers war. Bismarck created the new state in the north by puting all other states under prussian rule. It was this made up of Prussian lands (Brandenburg-Prussia and the Rhineland) Hannover and some others. Important to mention are the Hanse cities (for example Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck, Rostock,...). The colors of Prussia were Black and White and those of the Hanse traiding league were white and red. Thus the norther german alliance revieved a mixture of both with the top half beeing the Prussian and the latter half beeing the Hanse flag.
    3. The origin of the modern german flag's clolors is actually not clear. Most historians believe they orignate back to the Napoleanic wars when the German lands east of the Rhine rose up and fought aganst Napoleon's French empire. At that time a unit was formed called the "Lützower Jäger" (Lützow Skirmishers) who accepted volunteers. Mostly students joined that newly formed regiment and they wore black uniforms with reg insignia and golden buttons. They became some sort of a symbol of the fight for freedom (against Napoleonic and French repression) and thus might have become the inspiration for the flag of the revolution in 1848/49.
    There is also a poem associated to the colors whichs goes as follows:
    Aus der Schwärze der Knechtschaft
    durch blutige Schlachten
    ans goldene Licht der Freiheit
    From the darkness of servitude (black)
    through bloody battles (red)
    into the golden light of freedom (gold)

      why? the current colors are way more patriotic and a simbol of freedom. The Empire's flag was just a mixture between the Prussian and the Hanse flag. No real meaning to it.
      The current flag has a poem associated to it that promotes the fight for freedom

    a story in germany says, the two-headed eagle looks protecting to the west (France) while it looks awared to the east (Poland/Russia). While France, Germany and parts of Spain where territory of the older Franko Empire, Germany protected against the "wild east". Sadly, its not that common anymore in Germany and France did betray the German several times ending with the 1. World War.

    The 2 head eagle has its roots to the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as Byzantine Empire) and 1 head was looking at Rome and the other was looking at Constantinople and then Germany(and many others like serbia - russia etc) copied the Byzantine Eagle as they claimed to be Romans , for example when constantinople fell Russians (and Greeks) believed that Moscow was the 3rd Rome due to the religious connection they had with Byzantine Empire , also German city states copied this eagle as they claimed to be Romans too (and it was like a fashion trend to be a roman XD)

    the flag of the german empire is that way cuz it wanted to "unite" all german states from the biggest (prussia with its flag being black and white) and the smallest (the Hanse (or trade) cities and their color being red (see emblem of modern day hamburg, bremen or lübeck))

    Nice video! However, in 7:10, you say that when used by the federal goverment, the flag also includes a coat of arms, and while that is true, the coat of arms you show is not the correct one, although a very similar one. The coat of arms shown in the video is the “Bundesadler” used in sports events, for example. The one used by the federal goverment is the “Bundeschild” and it can only be used by goverment authorities. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Germany)

    Great video. Very nicely presented.
    Unfortunately there are some errors in the video.
    The "German Confederation" was not a state, but only a confederation of states and initially consisted of 39 sovereign states. But that can't be called Germany yet. The flag of this confederation was only introduced in 1848 and was "black-red-gold".
    The naval war flag was just the same with the coat of arms of the German Confederation at the top left.
    In 1866 the "German Confederation" was dissolved and a year later Prussia founded the "North German Confederation" together with 22 other states. It was actually a state and not a confederation.
    From this time on you can speak of "Germany". The flag was of course "black-white-red". "Black and white" are the colors of Prussia and "red" the color of the Hanseatic cities.
    In 1871 this state was renamed "German Empire" and dissolved in 1943. From 1919 the flag was changed to "Black-Red-Gold". The trade flag was "black-white-red" with a small version of the state flag in the upper left corner.
    In 1933 the flag was again the one that was used before 1919. From 1934 the flag of the state was then the party flag of the NSDAP.
    The Federal Republic of Germany has been using "black-red-gold" as a flag since 1949. The version with the federal eagle in the middle may only be used by state institutions. Outside this setting it is forbidden, but is only tolerated at larger events (sporting events).
    By the way: The name "Weimar Republic" is not the name of the German state after 1918, but only the name of a period of time. The German name for "German Empire" has never changed.
    This name was later given by historians because the constituent assembly was held in Weimar. People at that time spoke more of the "German Republic".
    The name "Third Reich" is also used a bit incorrectly here. The actual "Third Reich" was only founded in 1943 under the name "Greater German Reich". Before that it was still the "Second Reich" but under the leadership of the National Socialists.
    Still good video and nicely explained. Keep it up. 👍

    The symbol of the two headed eagle is quite simple... It's the imperial symbol. It only can get used by the emperor.
    As you can see for the Austrian two headed eagle, or the Russian two headed eagle - the only two other empires in Europe.
