  • Here is my second attempt to imagine what UNREAL released on computers from the 1980s might look like. Thanks to the higher resolution of the Hercules cards, I personally think it looks much better than on the CGA card
(even though the Hercules card only displays two colors)

They're surprisingly good images, but amusing to be measuring framerate as Seconds per Frame and not Frames per Second!

and such devices still work and will work another 50 years, because now we have speed, back then we had quality

I don't understand what this statement is supposed to say, outside of your nostalgia reaching peak insanity. Slow and resilient devices still exist and are being used for astronomy, industrial devices, medical devices. For most use cases, we want speed. The "quality" of an 80s home computer is irrelevant today, because it's computing power is not even worth a pack of cigarettes. I've had a computer with GTS 250 graphics card for something like 15 years, and only power bricks have failed twice. So some of these devices last far beyond what is useful. Utility won.
For things like printers, TVs etc. it's a different story of course.

The combination of chonki polygons and sharp pixels works very well.

I have a good feeling that Unreal would've been a success even in the late 80s, as an adventure game (like Myst) with some turn based combat. Unreal back in the day felt like Myst 3D with guns

Are those actual game renders or renders of still images, how did you port those to that old PC?

Still images only, rendering anything is too much for a little 286:)
Original photos are processed using the program found on this website:
      8bitworkshop.com/dithertron/#
      It's called Ditherton
It allows you to convert photos to many different graphics modes(CGA,EGA,C64,NES,APPLE etc)
I used Mac128k format, it is closest to the Hercules graphics mode. Similar resolution(512x324) and 2 colors.
You can display the photos processed in this way in MS-DOS using the CompuShow 9.04a program

This is dumb. It's like trying to imagine what Doom would have looked like, if it had been released on a digital pregnancy test.
    Oh wait.
