but it is correct that activating mTOR all day every day is definitely going to enable those dark prophecies - which is why you need to also activate AMPK, with short- high-intensity interval training. Then taking a long time off, doing yoga etc.. rest like a monk. Don't overdo things. Alternate between ice baths and saunas. Cold exposure can activate AMPK, while heat stress induces heat shock proteins, both of which can keep mTOR in check.
I don't think he's horribly off base on when to exercise (7:15). I viewed Thomas' discussion on muscle building just as you break a fast as... "when is it optimal to exercise when you're fasting?". I think he would agree that consuming protein multiple times a day over 3-5 meals would be better (most body builders wake in the middle of the night to consume protein) but I don't see how you're going to be doing that while on an intermittent fast. In IF you're going to be eating within a 6-8 hour window... eating 5 meals would be... difficult (nonstop basically) and the rest of the day you're not going to be able to eat anything. His point is that the best time to train when on IF is when you're breaking the fast for peak mTor. Personally I think he's trying to tweak the system a little too much... doubt it makes a huge difference.
I think what DeLauer meant by "growing tumors" was "failing to starve tumors". He didn't mean "make healthy cells turn cancerous." Everybody is constantly growing tumors that our bodies kill while they are still microscopic. As our immune system weakens with age, these tumors begin to survive longer. For decades. Too small to notice, but still alive enough to get bigger. Keto deprives them of sugar, and fasting triggers autophagy for our body to eat them. If we keep our bodies in an MTOR state all the time, these tumors never get killed off.
My takeaway from his remark about mTOR and cancer was that he was implying that if you constantly spike mTOR you don't stimulate autophagy much thereby increasing cancer risk over time through the accumulation of cellular waste ? I guess I tried to fill in the blanks.
Great critic here. Your right when you say there is a tendency to sensationalise rather than analyse scientifically on the web these days . Thank goodness we have you.

Thanks very much, we need more debunking videos like this. I watch Thomas's videos and he does make many uninformed assumptions, emphasises too many chemicals, and uses selective references to promote an idea which may not be true.
Probably way too hyperspecific on the MTOR to tumor pathway, but are you aware of any specifics for cancer-prone populations? I think it was Peter Attia that said longevity is a battle between cancer and everything else, so I tend to err on the side of avoiding cancer because of an MSH6 mutation.
I heard some research from Dr. Gabriel Lyons about consuming at least 30 grams of protein for first and last meal each as some older adults cannot absorb enough protein unless it hits this threshold. A foremost protein nutrition subject matter expert (forget the name) also stated the same on Dr. Peter Attia's podcast as well.
Probably Donald Layman, who is Gabby Lyons mentor. His focus is enough leucine at each meal. Especially for older folks. And for muscle synthesis. But by eating 30-40 grams of animal protein each meal, the minimum will likely be met.
3:48 the capacity of our body to burn fat adapts when we are on a intermitent fasting for long than 30d. so, that makes all diference, and on my own experience (on OMAD), this really translates on fat burn. (lost 2 numbers on jeans every week, (i'm about 35kg loss now...))
Before the fasting craze I did and still do only have lunch and dinner and prefer to train while fasted in the morning and my psyche and physiology have adapted to it i guess. I have no idea whether its technically correct or not. Great channel btw
I do IF simply because I like it and it fits my lifestyle. It not only makes me feel good but it's a good way to practice self discipline for other purposes (at least it is for me). But I would never say that it is the best way to build muscle. I also lift weights and I tend to do so fasted but I'm not out to maximize muscle growth, I just want some muscle growth and generally to be as healthy as possible. To me health is about balance and not even seeking any extremes.
Recently there have been a few (seemingly) well executed studies that showed a large effect on mortality (i.e. increasing it) associated with fasting. Shockingly, DeLauer doesn't want to talk about that.
I feel like you completely missed the point and focused on something that he didnt actually say about the insulin response after fasted training. His point was not that you should try to eat all your protein at one point, it was that you are more sensitive after fasted exercise so whatever you do eat will make insulin and mtor react even better then normal.
3:40 I like running while fasted because it feels like my hormone signalling afterwards makes it easier to keep the caloric deficit to lose weight. If I burn fat while I run, my hunger doesn't shoot up like crazy afterwards, especially if I have a lot of protein immediately afterwards.
The cumulative effect of your studies on me has been to reorient the focus of my workout routine to one of recovery. Recovery is now paramount, not specific quantified goals.
I’m embarrassed to say that I dislike him and his style. I try to avoid any of his videos. Unfortunately, the RUclips algorithm loves him and forces him into any health searches I do.
But sir, the second study you are referring says that the group that takes 40g x 2 times every 6 hours meaning that the first 40 grams where taken right after the training does not give the body enough time to start the body to initiate the synthesis, this mean that great part of the total intake is converted into glucose or something or used for other purposes other than building new muscle, compared to the 20g x 4 times intake
dr layman also says thats it's better large amout few times a day is better than small several times a day because it require 2.5 gr of leucine and 30g overall protein to trigger mtor... So, im confused here
Very interesting analysis and yes I agree on your points. I never really take his stuff literally....he has some good general advice on specific veggie and fruit items of more recent videos and Iike his emphasis on fiber. Then again I'm not really into muscled bodybuilding stuff being a female. We (ie most females) just want to be fit and toned with regular resistance exercises but not look like the hulk. :D
Also i have heard you should have 30 grams of protein per meal to have enough leucine to activate mtor especially if not working out which in itself would activate mtor. And to be healthy, you definitely do not want to be having 4 meals a day or even 10 meals. This is common knowledge and the Is longevity field.
I watched DeLauer a few times. He is basically a spokes-model reporter, who pretty frequently offers less than reliable info. The last time I watched him was years ago when he put out a video in which he told people to "binge on brazil nuts". Thanks so much for setting the facts straight. It would be best to regulate these type of podcasts to protect people who need real health information. Also their keto advise is dangerous for some people....don't give medical advice unless you have the credentials. Please keep up the good work.
And who do you think should be the regulators of health information, big Pharma? The food industry? The profit driven medical system? Corrupt politicians who take money from big Pharma and the food the food industry? Caveat emptor. The consumer is the solution to consumer protection.
3:03 doesn't make sense, since the time under stress is only a few minutes, this is insufficient to explain the prevention of breakdown during the many hours after training...after all nobody is training 24/7. 3:22 jogging is a bad example. As long as you run out of breath, you're not getting sufficient energy from burning fat. Hiking or cycling would be much more realistic choices if the goal is to burn only fat. Also the main point of fasting is spiking the levels of HGH in your blood which maximizes muscle growth. So combining fasting/intermittent fasting with training is very sensible as long as you stay in ketosis.
At 3:46 you have a table. Doesn't that table show that with fasted exercise they lost more weight on average than non-fasted exercise? Isn't that result perfectly consistent with the hypothesis and therefore in no way refutes the hypothesis? True, the difference between the two was not statistically significant. But the evidence from the trial was not evidence against the hypothesis at all. The evidence, if anything was supportive of and consistent with the hypothesis. It just provided weak support. When a difference is not statistically significant, it doesn't mean that a difference doesn't exist. It means that you can't be confident about the difference. That the difference in fact might simply be due to noise, to sampling error, rather than to the true and unknown difference, whatever that may be.
I am female and like most females I just want to look toned. I want to be curvy but not fat. Thomas would not be someone who I would be influenced by. I think he may appeal to males who want to look shredded and have muscles. I think you would be more knowledgeable about Mtor and all the rest. I like the fact check.
With female hormones, your genetic potential won't let you look like him no matter how hard you try. Looking toned is just having good muscle for your frame and less body fat, toned muscle doesn't exist. Any female bodybuilders that come to mind are taking testosterone, possibly more than even young men have naturally..
Thomas is a cool guy but not perfect certainly not his information about certain subjects, usually he sites the study that he took the information from, thats why anyone should take anyone videos with a grain of salt if it doesn’t have the sources to back up their claims Thank you for the video and i hope you keep making content about Thomas its better for us common folks to have you fact check big youtubers
I think one of my main issues with citing references is that many people don't actually understand the references, or simply don't read them to analyze the data themselves, but rather, read the abstract and just call it a day. There have been several times in my short career thus far where I've disagreed with the conclusions based on the data within a study, so references are great and necessary, but don't exclude someone from being wrong. Will do!
@@Physionic As a listener of the Low Carb MD podcast I've heard myriad concerns about exactly that problem, where the abstract and/or conclusion simply doesn't match the actual results, or perhaps worse, the study is cleverly designed to reach a conclusion that benefits whoever funded the study.

i think DeLauer means well, but for me i've found that he gets too caught up in topics that i think are either sensationalized , or outright click-bait. to put it another way, i prefer to listen to content creators that focus on one premise - building a foundation for a life of health and wellness. content for the sake of content can confuse the message, and confuse the viewer. unless health and wellness content is always anchored in a fundamental premise, chances are i will not listen to the content creator.

I do 23 hours OMAD, including my workout, so I still do fasted workout. Then I eat 15 raw eggs and prepare for some bacons and beef karubi or any meat available... Wish you the best and continue to spread the facts. More power to you Sir🙏
Sounds good mate, only I remember Dr Cywes stating that if you eat more than 150 gms of protein in one sitting the surplus is basically wasted. This has been my mantra since I started working out 25 years ago. Still, we are all individuals. 15 eggs would be about right !!

I enjoy your vlog, but your comment about MTOR and cancer progression are dubious. It has been established that everyone has mutated cells that are constantly being formed and destroyed by our immune system and other mechanisms, so your "otherwise healthy" comment is misleading. MTOR elevation is fueling cancer cells.
In that case, bodybuilders must be filled with cancer, considering their mTOR levels are stimulated constantly. I stand by what I said - it's incorrect to assume mTOR activation, alone, causes cancer. Completely incorrect.
Well, if we were to assume he's talking about benign tumors, it doesn't change the argument, but I also don't believe he was talking about benign tumors when discussing a negative of mTOR stimulation.
@@Physionic Your incorrect on this. Our body's build cancer cells EVERYDAY. While at the same time our immune cells destroy cancer cells everyday.
If Im listening yo something that does me frights or seems a bit suss, I come running to Physionic to check it out for real. Yeah
Great video! Will be waiting for a video from you about CANCER in details. TY
I feel like you completely missed the point and focused on something that he didnt actually say about the insulin response after fasted training. His point was not that you should try to eat all your protein at one point, it was that you are more sensitive after fasted exercise so whatever you do eat will make insulin and mtor react even better then normal.
Excellent overview - thanks.
Nothing to be embarrassed about, Jason.
Hover your cursor to the top-right corner of your disliked videos, click on the three-dots and ask YT not to recommend.
He's disgusting, imo, so you're not alone Jason.
He bugs me tho it's a bit of tripping the prom queen. A salesman isn't always wrong.
For future reference Thomas has never let facts interrupt one of his RUclips videos
Haha, noted.
LOL. yeah, even when you correct him.
Search leucine food sources and both animal and plant sources. First is more concentrated but the latter is also a viable option. Thx Nic.
So, im confused here
Also new studies contradicting the one you cited but with a Specific alteration which enables the one meal to be absorbed better
He updated this as he learned new information, he’s saying have bcaa and creative for the leucine pre workout and post and have the meal
Afraid that no matter what you do, your hormones won't let you look like the Hulk.
Training intensely with resistance training will give you what your looking for. You will not look hulk like if you stay natural I promise
Intermittent Fasting Muscle Building never worked for me. Eat protein 4 hours apart worked best. Cut back on carbs but not too much when leaning up.
Also i have heard you should have 30 grams of protein per meal to have enough leucine to activate mtor especially if not working out which in itself would activate mtor. And to be healthy, you definitely do not want to be having 4 meals a day or even 10 meals. This is common knowledge and the Is longevity field.
Love this video! Can you please considering do some fact checking videos on "mic the vegan" and dave asprey in the future?
Already have one on Dave Asprey.
1:55 let's all say a small prayer for the model needing a spotter for her 2.5 lb weights
I watched DeLauer a few times. He is basically a spokes-model reporter, who pretty frequently offers less than reliable info. The last time I watched him was years ago when he put out a video in which he told people to "binge on brazil nuts". I kind of wonder if anyone died from this advise, because it is entirely possible to die from binging on some types of brazil nuts.
I like fasted workout, doing it for 15years
The Thomas uses different hormone preparations for muscle building. He does not tell about this, for that reason he has zero credibility in my eyes
What do you mean by “hormone preparations”?
@@Physionic, anabolic steroids for muscle building (Sorry for my imperfect English).
@@orjanbern4766 No worries, Orjan - your English is good.
@@orjanbern4766 Do you actually have proof for that claim? Or is it just that his body looks 'to good' to be natural? Looking at his age & body it is possible to build that physic if you have good genetics. So without proof you cant make that claim.
@@GodofGamesssnah he's definitely on some stuff that he can't talk about. I don't think it's relevant to his content though. It's not like he ever says "just drink apple cider vinegar and walk 10k steps a day and you can look like this". Whether he looks like Mr Olympia or a sarcopenic animal rights activist, he backs up his claims without relying on his own physique for credibility. Being jacked or on steroids doesn't make you wrong or right about anything
I followed his RUclips channel for a while now. He became like the Peanuts teacher sounding after a while.
Keep up the good work 🙂
Thank you, Peter. Kind of you.
Another critical video of Thomas Delauer when was starting with the light brown cabinets
The other video criticizing about preferring brown bread to white bread come on..
Now someone in the comments said Thomas is using'different hormone "?steroids? Doubt it
I'm a big Thomas fan
Quality through and through
Good work!
Thank you. DeLauer drives me nuts. It almost seems like he TRIES to use “sciency” words to sound like he knows what he’s talking about but his knowledge often doesn’t rise to his vocabulary.
Thomas also, always, has "nuggets" of sponsor-driven promotional ads related, or semi-related, to whatever topic he's on in a given video.
Randomly I love the back ground painting, did you paint it?
Thanks for the analysis
That is kind of a pernickety correction of a thesis were full stops and commas are not set right :)
Since most adults do have tumours (even if tiny) it would seem a bad idea to have mTOR on full throttle all the time, no?
You have the BEST voice and I like the content too! Win win. 🏆
I feel like your eyes are looking into my soul 😳
They are.
@@Physionic😂
Thomas is a cool guy but not perfect certainly not his information about certain subjects, usually he sites the study that he took the information from, thats why anyone should take anyone videos with a grain of salt if it doesn’t have the sources to back up their claims
Thank you for the video and i hope you keep making content about Thomas its better for us common folks to have you fact check big youtubers
Will do!
He is the furthest thing from "cool".
@@rosevanderreijden3216 thank you for sharing your opinion but thomas helped me lose quite the weight and for that im thankful for him
@@Physionic As a listener of the Low Carb MD podcast I've heard myriad concerns about exactly that problem, where the abstract and/or conclusion simply doesn't match the actual results, or perhaps worse, the study is cleverly designed to reach a conclusion that benefits whoever funded the study.
People in the longevity field know that you don't want m-tor all the time
I would rather fast and workout fasted everyday. Feel fine and have no inflammation and don’t need big muscles
I like to work out fasted and have a couple good meals, then the next day have three good meals, then skip a day or two of eating on the weekend. It seems to work for me. I'm not The Adonis, but I'm better that I was before.
Finally! 🫡🙂
Was curious when Tom's videos will appear here for deep scientific analysis, although I truly believe and follow almost anything he and Dr. Berg suggest and convey as info and guidance. Their efforts to provide common sense to a number of health-related topics and knowledge helped me a lot with tunning my personal health and well-being. Hope these scientific videos will further elaborate and clarify some points and make certain decision-making more scientific supported. Keep the great content! ✌️🙏
Hahhahaha Dr. Berg 😂😂
You mean the lying chiropractor who ACTUALLY said that carbs cause autism?
Come on…
Oi mate, speaking of building muscle and burning fat, how is your fat loss journey going? Have you hit the wall yet?
Thanks for checking in, Mario. So, I hit my goal weight and a little past, but it's becoming colder here, so I'm now reversing course to add some muscle to my legs. It's been going well so far. I'm hoping to put on 10 lbs (obviously some will be fat) before slimming down again early next year.
@@Physionic I see. I have been following a similar protocol for the last few years. Once a year cut downto 10% body fat, and then let the weigh slowly creep up, usually to around 14%. It would be nice to stay leaner year round but it is just too hard to build muscle and enjoy life while doing so.
Great video
Thanks, Jim!
i think DeLauer means well, but for me i've found that he gets too caught up in topics that i think are either sensationalized , or outright click-bait. to put it another way, i prefer to listen to content creators that focus on one premise - building a foundation for a life of health and wellness. content for the sake of content can confuse the message, and confuse the viewer. unless health and wellness content is always anchored in a fundamental premise, chances are i will not listen to the content creator.
Somehow, just the fibre itself is not enough to trigger peristalsis of the intestines... It may need combination of soluble fibre, insoluble fibre, sugar, salts, etc 😅 just an assumption
Sir but when those studies were done what if the subjects when noone is watching them they were eating Cheetos, frito lays, tacos, enchiladas and McDonald's like there is no tomorrow???😅😅
All is fair in love and war. If someone puts out an opinion it's only fair that another person has the right to share thiers. I might not agree, but don't let my opinion stop you from sharing yours. I think Thomas is closer to the mark than you, but all theories deserve reflection and debate.
'Breaking down fatty acids while training'?!
LOL, most fat I burn from resistance, is burned during the night when my idle-metabolism goes bonkers.
Or does he mean 'going on a ~12hours hike in the mountains'?😛
What's with the 15khz tone? You got a 90s CRT running in the background?
Calories in....Calories out that's all, easy!
Great video! I really like the fact checking videos. In fact, that’s how I found your channel by one of Dr.Berg’s videos.
Great, Irving. More to come.
Great information!
Hey, Nic, I don't see my comment posted from my phone. I notice that my comments sometimes get lost when I don't have something flattering to say. DeLauer is ridiculous.
I’ve even had my own comments deleted at times. Just know that it isn’t me.
Thomas and Mark Sisson have changed their minds on things. I know he's talked about having fruits before exercise is better then after.
That’s great. I can appreciate that.
Very complicated
But, but... he's buff and can raise one eyebrow. Sorry, feeling snarky. Thanks for all the clarification.
I'm really hooked in your videos and your approach is superb... I'm not sure about the resistance training in a fasted workout and on a Keto/Carnivore Diet, I'm not an expert but I haven't seen any decrease but it increases my performance. I got stronger and I do minimal reps based on what I studied due to the type of muscle fiber I use during my workout... also, I have been hacking my body for quite sometime now...
I do 23 hours OMAD, including my workout, so I still do fasted workout. Then I eat 15 raw eggs and prepare for some bacons and beef karubi or any meat available... I easily get full sometimes I can only eat less than 200g of meat. I also do black coffee to start the day and some ACV before bedtime.
My Workout Routine: Weighted Calisthenics/Gymnastics/Resistance Training (Deadlift/Squats)
45 mins - 1 hour - Everyday (Except when I feel super fatigue, then I'll do active rest by then)
Some of high intense workout:
One Arm pull up
Planche
Front Lever to Muscle Up
Front Lever freestyle
Gymnastic Rings (Dips, Weighted Dips, Weighted MUs, Planche)
The only downside I'm beginning to realize is the lactic acid I was feeling before I transition to Keto/Carnivore. I am prone to injury especially tendonitis since most of my trainings involved tendons on those movements I mentioned.
Again, I'm happy to find your channel...
@@marcjames3487 Agree, and though my current in take now is 20eggs, I'm still not hitting it and that's because I believe my leptin and grhelin is doing what it supposed to do... trying to bulk little by little and I can see progress based on my experiments... i'll keep it monitored for 1month and I can't promise that it'll be a smooth sailing as oftentimes I have family gatherings and I hate to be the killjoy if I will not drink 😆
I don't know, looking at both of you, I'm going with the other guy for muscle building advice 😂
Muscle building and cell biology are two very different things. One guy is a PhD candidate for it while the other guy is a buff influencer
@@adanice49 gotta practice what you preach if you want people to take you seriously
He didn't say create tumors he said GROW tumors.
Is the channel here saying the tumor growth is completely independent of mTOR?
Ok now i get it you are debunking these charmlatan’s 😅
He's a very intelligent guy, but he loves to get into the weeds of bio terminology and always sounds like a doctor debating a scientist. He comes off as guy who is continuously researching, but when he comes upon an "ah HA" moment of knowledge, his hair catches fire and he rushes out a video, speaking with authority. A lot of fitness influencers may sound like true Academics, but really are just loud-mouthed fitness models (Jillian) or paid spokespersons because they're so shredded (that V-Shred guy). I find him enthusiastic and sincere, but he regurgitates intel like a Chat bot. A lot if it's true, but some of it is ...improvised.
Good on ya
Thanks, Cory.
I could swear I saw him posing as a doctor a few years back, might be wrong.
DeLauer has no idea what he's talking about most of the time. It's all production and advertisement.
He looks kind of crazy, if you ask me (which you didn't.)
Yes, he does look really crazy. He's a salesman and not a scientist.
Good.
Great job!now i can stop worrying about tumors 😅
I enjoy your vlog, but your comment about MTOR and cancer progression are dubious. It has been established that everyone has mutated cells that are constantly being formed and destroyed by our immune system and other mechanisms, so your "otherwise healthy" comment is misleading. MTOR elevation is fueling cancer cells.
In that case, bodybuilders must be filled with cancer, considering their mTOR levels are stimulated constantly. I stand by what I said - it's incorrect to assume mTOR activation, alone, causes cancer. Completely incorrect.
Thomas the least popular of my "go to" people to get useful dietary information.
So, should we exercise fasted? Now I'm confused
Feel free. Just know there isn’t an added benefit.
@@PhysionicNo added benefit to what? Muscle growth or weight loss?
Actually, he says tumor but didn't mention the word cancer?
Well, if we were to assume he's talking about benign tumors, it doesn't change the argument, but I also don't believe he was talking about benign tumors when discussing a negative of mTOR stimulation.
@@Physionic Your incorrect on this. Our body's build cancer cells EVERYDAY. While at the same time our immune cells destroy cancer cells everyday. Point is that you will always have cancer cells ready to use that mtor. So having constantly elevated mtor levels will put you at greater risk in getting some serious cancer that your immune cells wont be able to destroy.
So he aint wrong in saying that spiking mtor multiply times a day will increase your chance on developing tumors.
TDL vids are basically commercials.
Cant stand RUclipsrs like Thomas that think they know anything, they don't even have a degree or actively researching this stuff.
You are sooo funny!
Can we see you shirtless in a pic next to his, just to compare? Thanks.
