What are people smoking fr. When is a game mode dead, that has 80k+ active players? Megaservers coming with at least 12k active raiders.
You know that 2004 vanilla had around 2k players on a realm? Nostarius had similar numbers, wasn't considered dead.
PvP situation is bad in terms of BGs, but its far from dead..
You just need to be in an active community/guild and you are perfectly fine to enjoy the game...

Thats the issue. They split WoW into like 3-4 games and it's numbers are going to flux when ever an update happens. I call it update hopping. And I have a guild on each one. I raid log for all of them. I also mostly do arena's in cata or retail.

Probably more like 10k players across characters but that's still quite successful currently. That would put it half way up the steam charts.
Number also doesn't include non-raiders, no add-on and bots

SOD isn't dying. The retail andies just have a new expansion and have left for that.

I just started playing wow classic SoD, night elf hunter and I see other NE everywhere.
Still having a blast with SoD, I took a break during the extended ST phase. Until new raids are released likely after NAX I'm sure people will come back alot to experience the new stuff

I started SoD with a group of 10 friends. We only lost one during p1 but only one of us made it to P4 (it wasn't me) and even that last one is done now.
That being said... SoD did it's job for me because this is the first time I've played retail seriously.
Maybe the term “dying” can be argued over, but the problem is the raid logging culture. Tuesday nights I’ll see 9 or 10 layers, but if I try to find a group for BRD on a Friday night then I search for hours…
So you're mad that people have a life and okay the game a designated amount of time? 90% of the players are at least 30 years old and have kids. People don't have time to play 14 hours a day and especially not at your specific time Friday night to carry you thru BRD brother.
Dont really think sod is dead or dying i was playin in living flame US before merge and it was very active, now i think ill be more
I will never understand the classic community in saying "sod is dying" no... No it's not I'm literally on SoD and SW and IF are both full ALL THE TIME LFG chat is fucking zooming going fast yeah sure the game doesn't have the crazy player base from p1 but those numbers are 100% sqeud because it was lvl 25 with 3 day lockout raids and people had many alts and ofc as phases went on we saw a decline because the game became less alt friendly as we continued and some phases lasted longer than they should have if you all have this weird problem with it just go back to playing classic era like what?!??

People are quitting because no one wants to waste time on a seasonal "Classic+ Beta" server.
This is a bad take since Classic+ is at least 2 years away.
This is a horrendous take as by definition every version of wow since day one has been seasonal in the same sense that SoD is. Classic era is the only version of wow that exists officially that is evergreen. If we're going to use the argument that "people dont want to play sod because eventually their gear will be useless in a new expansion or their servers will get left behind", you could say that about every single expansion. Why did people play vanilla once TBC was announced, I mean all their hard earned gear was going to be made useless overnight, right? /s
And as the commenter above stated, classic + is very clearly a long ways away. So you have a whole ton of time on this "seasonal" server still left, and it likely will end up being longer than even the original vanilla was.

Nah, SOD is not dead. I would add you know it does have "Season" in the name. Which means, At some point. It's gonna end. (Hopefully, classic plus.) That is probably the best reason for the numbers to drop. Retail happened. Everyone is on that I would say.
Sod isn’t dead. It just found its playerbase/demographic. Nothing wrong with that, most games would consider 80-100k players a massive success.
FWIW I haven’t played since phase 2. It just wasn’t for me 🤷🏻♂️
As predicted its a microscopic one. The rest was playing classic untill blizz added cash shop and token and now they quit. Personally i recommend guild wars 2
I just don’t like playing on a temporary server, I have a LOT less time to play games now than I used to. I’d rather wait until (hopefully) Classic+ comes out and really dedicate my time there. In the meantime, there are a few other games I still need to finish.
My server in peek hours there are like 10 layers going on. The rest of the time, just 1 layer
I like to try the 1 character only rule. No alts no bank char no raidlog on multiple chars.
BUT the Leveling has to be long af. Like 200 hours playtime till 60.
This need more dungeons, more quests more zones and a big ass mega server.
I think this could be a really amazing journey to enjoy with some friends.

I have no problem with season of discovery existing, but I really wish that people that enjoy season of discovery would stop being insecure about people preferring vanilla vanilla, and i'd like it if things from season of discovery would stop leaking into era servers.

Ive been playing retail the last couple of weeks leveling my OG characters from Vanilla and having a blast. I really doubt I'll log into SOD again.
Certain People love drama.
Just play the type of game you like. Find friends, teammates, guild, and just enjoy.

Great video. I think any seasonal stuff goes against everything an mmo is so they kind of shot themselves in the foot with that. Peak raiding in vanilla imo is bwl so im looking forward to that at least in SoD!

where did total paid subs peak? ive played for 12 years and left at season 4 retail. the game isnt the same as it was. blizz has totally diluted the sense of community with rertail. turned a toon 70 3 days before Cata and change after change screwed the game up. with the exception of T-mogs. that was a multi-million dollar idea
cata is when the game peaked in terms of total popularity... it was around 15M subs, then they released Kung Fu panda and ruined everything
I quit SoD because of how frustrated I was with Felstriker being irreplaceable in raid and essentially having no barrier of spamming UBRS. I burned myself out. That and how much it'd cost to buy consumables, which would probably be offset by the dailies. Still, felstriker was a big hit for me. I probably ran over 80 UBRS in what 2 weeks?
That was changed a while ago my friend with rogue nerfs felstriker and any other dagger from MC was like a 20dps difference and the proc rate is being nerfed next phase and they are making a new updated felstriker for the next phase too
its dying on non raid nights. thats how it goes everywhere though from what i've seen the past few years. its so easy to farm a months worth of raid consumes, you can take 2 days a month and then the other 28 days you dont "need" to log in

As a Boomie I really miss the fact that I put a rune in a slot and that's it.. no other choices, no other variants.. would love to see some various specs, like dots, direct fast dmg (but shorter in longer fights) and vice versa.. it's so boring.. new skin... that wont do for me.
I think Classic+ will take a long time to put together: people want new raids, new zones, new quests, balance changes - that will take time. I expect we will see fresh servers in HC and maybe Era first. Possibly another Season of Something before a permanent Classic+ launches in a year or so.
What’s sad is that Classic doubled the sub count when it came out in 2019/2020. It never got the love it deserved and now retail is taking some of those players away. It’s also pretty clear that people “love” new xpacs for like a month or two then they quit. So we’ll see what everything is like around November.
People don’t level or rp or world pvp in the world like classic. it feels like everyone raid logs and goes for parsing. I understand the focus is on the new content but it doesn’t feel like classic
WoW retail is sad unplayable for many reasons, but now they are destroying all mid pop servers and having crazy high pop only. I left wotlk classic when they did this and am not playing wow until there are normal mid pop servers and they are safe and are not going to be shut down.
Also those numbers in classic are higher because everyone was locked inside
SoD is awful and if you're playing it you are just enjoying it because of the vanilla ice cream underneath it.
problem is the 5 different wow versions. we need 1 world, 1 version..
I could live with retail being separate version for low attention span morons and the rest should just be classic style wow where you lever for a year or two to get to end game.
12 month server for vanilla is a HUGE mistake imo, it's needs longer for people to stick around. Look at som for example, bwl at hit and people hadn't even got into an MC (also due to rank gear being out immediately) but regardless, why rank later if its only 7-8 months till end of the server. Needs to be nearer 2 years imo. Progress to TBC then feels almost worth it, time to play a few chars etc etc.
SoD would never work on a 2 year cycle, it'd be p3 but on steroids. People quitting in droves during those lulls in content. Now, if it was 2 years with BRAND NEW raid content added in between dry spells? Then yeah. But normal vanilla content, as in mc---bwl---aq---naxx? Would be atrocious on a 2 year cycle in sod.
12 months and we're around AQ phase, don't know where you got the 12 month server thing from.

Idk guys SOD isn't really vanilla at all in progression and feeling so i think better left as shorter time frame for that. For clarification, i'm more on about a true vanilla fresh or a classic + which hopefully doesn't have increased leveling speed and crazy abilities (my hope anyway).

No. SoD is essentially fusing into 2 megaservers, one pvp and one pve. They are offering free xfers from all pvp realms to Crusader Strike, and all PvE realms to Wild Growth. This has nothing to do with classic era and there are no fresh servers coming anywhere (yet).
Cata classic had two 99.8%horde servers and its dead in orgrimmar through the day on both of them theres more horde in orgrimmar on the 99.8% alliance server its weird😂

Can't be fixed. It's done. Will it maintain the population it has, yeah, probably, but most people don't want spend so much time on a nonperm seasonal server. I'll return during classic+, and if blizz is smart, the decline will be less extreme.

I hate retail because it just doesn't feel like WoW, but at the same time i could never get into SoD...because it felt like Classic with a light Retail coat of paint. The discovery aspect of runes was interesting but because they are spells that came in later versions/expansions...they felt out of place, feels weird to have spells that feel like the belong in Retail + no spell ranks - a part of Classic fantasy... If they instead made spells that were unique and not from other versions of the game...i would have been fine with it. In general, to me SoD feels like a ''Retailed'' version of Classic, and it just took away that magic, that feel. At the same time OG Classic has nothing new or fresh, content that's been replayed a 100 times over, everything is known and hyper-optimized for performance, not something i can get into either.
There just isn't in version of WoW i can get into anymore, it's just really detached from what used to make the game great.
Retail is pretty rad currently though and this is comming from a total classic andy. Im enjoying it, even gearing up in pvp, although im still clueless and getting pwned.
@@Psysso Retail suffers from the same issue it has for the longest time now - it's devoid of any MMORPG aspects. It's just an endgame/raid/dungeon simulator which offers nothing value, except for a half decent story now in TWW.
Classes are all reskins of each other with no distinct fantasy or roles.
In any case, i can see Retail appealing to a niche audience of raiders, mythic+ key pushers...perhaps an occasional rated PvPer. But anyone who is like me looking for an actual MMORPG experience...it has nothing to offer whatsoever.

@@Psysso The problems i have with Retail are at such a fundamental level that i'm getting put off the game with each passing day. Like, the fact that leveling is so insanely fast and im unable to play at slower pace to experience anything beyond current content gives me quite a bit of genuine depression. Sense of 'journey'' is one of the biggest parts of any RPG for me... and in Retail its non-existent....all in favor of endgame progression.
I literally have to take a break after 30 mins of playing because i get depressed of the way the game feels to play these days...everything feels pointless and worthless.
At least Cyberpunk 2077 is still there to give me some escape when that happens.
@@Kristers_K I get what your saying, retail is all about the endgame really, journey aka leveling experience aint there. For that there is classic. But the endgame is vast and easily accesible. Like you can solo queue arenas and raids, which is really inclusive for people that struggle finding groups or people in a competitive, hard enviroment.
For me sod died after ph1 and blizzard added incursions to make sure it stays dead and also kill any potential growth.
It's sad to realise that the dev team are actual griefers.
They didn't add incursions until phase 3, phase 1 was overrated

Turtle wow is much better sod is classic with retail spells very sad with all millions they do, and yes sod is death.
I tried turtle wow but there werent enough changes to classes for me to want to play. It also runs on the old vanilla client, which does not hold up at all. Blizzard has proven to be incompetent with managing and designing classic wow, but their client and infrastructure is and always will be miles ahead of any private server.
I’m not sure what the devs were thinking with SOD. The gameplay feels like retail but with a classic skin on it. The community was pretty vocal about the direction sod was going and the devs largely ignored it. If classic plus is even remotely like SOD blizzard won’t even get sub numbers close to the launch of original classic or even SOD.

I think a lot of people are moving on. WoW wasn't the best MMO when it came out, it still isn't today. It's just the one the most people were playing. That's why player count is such a big deal to the WoW community. There aren't many MMOs worse than WoW these days, and I'm guessing the crowd that's left has remembered that as SoD has gone on.
Now that SoD (which is nothing more than Classic with a thick load of retail blown on it) is dying, people are coming back to Classic-as they always do. Classic is as vibrant as ever. Still, Blizzard refuses to learn and still can’t figure out the formula for success that they had with original Vanilla. They always manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Do people that always want "fresh" stuff even count? As far as i know, in phase 1 SoD had the most players, and whenever a new phse started we had another little hype. But those players jump into a game and leave it again anyway. Mostly there is no reason for this, they just dont play any games for a longer time. But thjose players are pretty useless to guilds or communitys anyway. So who gives a f**k on them.
The “mega server merger” gave wil growth 118 new players as of posting this comment (1day after it went live)
It’s dead man, the classic devs need to sit down and actually use THEIR brains, not just recycled ideas someone else made 15-20 years ago.
They promised NEW. We have 1 new thing. A really really bad dungeon. I got 30+ discord comments of people leaving because “phase 5 has nothing interesting in it” or “p5 gives me 0 motivation to play”
They fumbled the ball hard, and I can only pray to whatever gods may be that they get fired and have no part in Classic+

They just did it as lazy as possible. If they wouldve added more quests and a few new zones most would accept it as Classic +.

sod will be around for a while, eventually progressing to endgame updates, at some point there will be enough content to deem the project "C+"I suppose.
I really dont like the players who start late and get turned off when the see someone else with good items or having fun, watching SoD unfold from a c u c k pov and have gaslight themselves into submission for now so win win
