Memphian here, I grew up in Westwood which is where VooDoo Village is located. I graduated High School with this Mane from VooDoo Village. Basically, it’s a group of family members from Haiti that settled there and bought with them, their religious customs. Really nice people that used to stay there and they did not bother anyone, only a few family members remain there as most of them became more Americans than Haitian.

I don't know how true that is but I have a question are they or Westwood located off of Third? I as because that's what he claims.
I grew up in Westwood. I went to Westwood Elementary and the Chickasaw in 1988. My mom went to 'Doc Harris' house because she was seeing spirits. I went with her. I met 'Doc Harris's ' son , summers before last.
I'm a recent transplant to Memphis and love seeing these videos about my adopted hometown. If you want to read more about the history of Hoodoo in Memphis and the mid-South, Tony Kail (the guy who wrote that Medium article) has written some good books about it. A. Schwab is still on Beale St, and they still sell a ton of candles and oils and all kinds of magick adjacent things.
My city!! Thank you for showing us some recognition because ALOT of people outside of the city do not know the history here. We get recognition mainly for BBQ, Elvis, 3 6Mafia, and crime. You are always welcome here.

As of crime, crime is in every city regardless of religion or spiritual belief. Crime is a lack of social and political infrastructure components, in my honest opinion, but that's a different conversation. Memphis has over 800 faithed based churches/groups, but for the longest time, we were known for embezzlement and now aggravated violent crimes. Crime is in every city regardless of religion or spiritual belief. As for being thankful, yes, I am thankful that anyone acknowledged Memphis in any form or fashion that doesn't concentrate on negative traits. We are a multifaceted city. We carry a strong spiritual and religious history, especially Judaism, as well. However, that's just me and my opinion.

Hi Yaya. I’m originally from Texas but have lived in Mississippi for most of my life. I don’t know much about Mississippi history aside from slavery. I would love to hear about Mississippi voodoo. Ppl still do “hoodoo” here btw.
Yes I bought this book like 8 years ago called Secret History of Memphis Hoodoo. Y'all should order it. Im a Nashville native, healer and spiritualist though. I had to get the scoop on Tennessee Hoodoo for sure. Memphis is rich in culture, Hoodoo culture, Bluesman and woman also used Hoodoo and they sing about it in their music! It's speaks about a man name Bishop who I've also heard older ppl in Nashville speak of him.
I come to Memphis 4 times a year, my child is a St. Jude baby. I feel the need to move here, not because of the treatment from the Hospital, something else. This is as close as I can get to Memphis, Egypt, for now. This video is my personal confirmation.
Beale is a street of restaurants and historic blues clubs and other places. Then yes I am a fellow witch that practice and we have many shops my favorites are EBOD and Othoon's they have historic graveyards and all kinds of stuff here in Memphis. Schwabbs store is no longer in business because the owner passed away but we still popping on the voo doo,and hooked doo, spiritual scene.
I'd love to see you do a series on the little talked about spots in the south, like the Mississippi Delta. Everyone talks about voodoo in NOLA, but I hear there's a lot to say about what was going on in Mississippi too!
Memphis born and raised now that I’m in Florida I get to share stories about voodoo village with my witchy friends a lot of people don’t know how deep it goes being that Memphis is in the Bible Belt my great grandmother taught us about our spiritual lineage and hoodoo practices well to me in particular I am so proud to be from Memphis we appreciate you❤
I'm from the Mtown. There is so much history here. As a child we had some many "traditions" that were just normal to our community. I didn't find out that a lot of it was actually hoodoo. Some one mentioned Jewish mysticism in the comments. I remember growing up in North Memphis area close to St. Jude. That area used to be a Jewish community and some of the older homes had Oudji boards in floors as floor furnace covers. I witness them in several of the houses of my childhood friends growing up. Not totally sure if it was related to the Jewish people who used to live in the community but its was very interesting to see. Of course we didnt dare use them. My stepmother removed them from our home when we moved there.
You lived in the “Pinch District”?! I heard this Pastor at Church one day say that that area was called the Pinch District because the Jews faces were so gaunt that they looked “pinched”! Very interesting
If you like Memphis hoodoo, look into Arkansas and Mississippi Delta voodoo. It's some of the most powerful and amazing magic I have witnessed and puts most other magic to shame.
Chile Yessss! I would totally be into watching a road trip or tour of some of these places. I'm in Cali but we hear so many stories of places in the south. Love you YaYa 💗

Hello, native Mississippian here and current resident of Memphis. You may not think of Memphis as such a place for rootwork but there's a whole book out there. It's called Stories of Rootworkers and Hoodoo in the Mid-South by Tony Kail. Mississippi has a deep connection to rootwork as well. AW Schwab is still open on Beale Street and it still sells items for rootwork including tarot/oracle cards. It's on the 3rd floor of the store. Beale isn't what it used to be but it's still a great experience. The Ernest Withers Gallery is on Beale as well.
Yes I’m here in Memphis! Raised in the midtown/ downtown area!! I felt the spirit so heavy in those areas! Mentally memphis has a spiritual hold on the ones that are truly awaken! Looks of people feel like Memphis is cursed but this video shows that the history never really spoken on❤ Memphis has a deep deep history ❤ much love for this video 🎉
Beale Street is a street located in the downtown Memphis area. One end of Beale Street (the popular section) has different clubs/bars, restaurants and stores on both sides of the street. It’s always music playing, a live band playing in the park area, street entertainment and ppl walking up/down going in/out of the different places including the A. Schwab store
