Maple Leaf Rag - way too fast

- For shits and giggles, I decided on a whim to see how fast I could possibly play this. Yes, I realize there's no musicality in this take. It was a speed test given to me by myself for no reason at all. :P
"Ragtime shouldn't be played fast." That's what I've always been told and tried to follow, but a little experiment never hurt anyone.
I agree that ragtime shouldn't be played fast because of the style, etc.. but the REAL reason nobody tells us? BECAUSE IT HURTS.
My “Joplin Fave Five” album is now available on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon music!

lot of people missed the point...who cares if it's too fast. it was just a test of technical ability, and it's damned impressive!
Yeah but if it is a test of technical ability and you don't execute all of the notes correctly.....what's the point? There were a few missed notes in there that wouldn't have been at a reasonable tempo, which could also allow for some musicianship to show. Faster is not better.
@@ssinssg Yes you're right, don't care about @12799MaDeuce
ikr. imagine clicking on a video titled “maple leaf rag - way too fast’ and getting salty over how fast it is.
@Benson It's 2021 bro we don't care what the composer wanted anymore, well, we care, but we don't have to
@Benson It wasn't Joplin who wrote that, it was the publisher John Stark in order to promote sales.
In any case Kristen arranges her own music so she can play it at what speed she likes. This was just a test, but in general her performance and arrangement is better suited to the 21st Century.

Or the final lap.
Oh shit...
Well done as a speed test... But the "ow..." at the end is what really sealed it for me. Thanks for sharing and making my day!
Ya can't play it this fast while keeping the wrists and forearms loose. That's why it hurts. Feels the same way when I play it this fast. I can actually play it a little bit faster, but not nearly as clean.

Dammit. I need to stop scrolling through the comments before I hear how the video ends.
could you please make this faster
Thanks to youtube you can always play the video speeded up. Just click the 'settings' button in the right hand side bottom corner of the screen :D
+Tomek Grochowski Too fast, too fast!! haha
+Kristen Mosca Do you use sustain pedal while playing things like this? I mean not in this particular video, but when you play this Rag with 'right' speed. I'm a beginner, but I think there's no point in using sustain since the notes are short and the tempo is fast.
+Tomek Grochowski I do use the sustain pedal but never hold it more than a second. I essentially use it so it doesn't sound too choppy while my left hand is making large jumps
+Kristen Mosca Really? But do you use it on every eight? Can anybody tell the difference anyway?
Joplin is turning in his grave after hearing that
Joel Ropchan shure cause the rules 1 of the rag is to never play it fast.... almost inaudible at this speed like hearing a 33t on 45t...

Joplin doesn't give a shit because he knows this isn't a serious performance.

NOT MY FUCKIN TEMPO
now, how SLOWLY can you play it?
+Gregory Bowen Brown -- listen to her first Disneyland version -- perfect tempo.
+John E I agree, she's great. One day I'd like to be able to play this.
I find it easier too fast than too slow for some reason
Evan9266 Same here, thought I was the only one. I played slower and I messed up a lot then I went fast and I barely missed any notes. Doesn't make sense.
Slowest music possible that still sounds like music is around 33bpm. I dont really know how to explain it well but watch Adam Neely's video on it, super interesting
This is a great example of some good talent. The ability to not miss notes, or play any notes out of time at that brisk of a tempo is incredible.
But the highlight of the video is definitely the end!
She said "Ow!" at the end -- I say "WOW!" at the end. What talent and accuracy. Perfection.
When you're walking 10 miles away from home and your mum texts you saying she ordered kfc

Love this...

I cannot imagine memorizing that piece of music. The three different rhythms and melodies, all in intertwined, -amazing.
scott joplin be screaming in pain rn
Haha I play that piece sometimes fast too, but I don't like it, because after playing it fast, it feels like my left hand is going to fall off D;
Exactly!! Hence the "ow." Haha
The fact that she didn't play the repeats made it "way too fast"
Just out of curiosity, how many hours do you think a complete beginner would need to spend on a piano to achieve such level?
+PeopleCanFly23
5-6 hours.
Benoni Frøland nice effort to answer a question..
+PeopleCanFly23 Since you are a 'complete beginner', I would suggest practicing fingering exercises for higher level pieces first due to their difficulty (ragtime in particular can really hurt your hands!). I myself am not a very good pianist, but with a lot of practice, one can most certainly take the sheet music to a piece they aspire to learn and begin to play it as long as they have good basic music theory knowledge and can apply it to the keyboard.
My advice for playing a piece a little (or a lot higher) than your skill level is to take the music and learn to play the piece - and especially certain bars of the piece - slowly at first to build confidence, but then gradually build the speed up to its original tempo. I did this learning a few Chopin pieces, and it seemed to work!
There should be no time frame you place upon yourself - when learning a piece, enjoy it, and really take your time. However, if you were dying to know how long it would take to achieve the Music Grade for the skill this piece requires, I'd personally say a few years
Never give up, though! Music is something truly fantastic. :)
Hope this helped in any way, friend. Sorry if it didn't. :)
Cian Darragh Thanks, it helped, I'm a complete beginner, I never played piano, but my parents got a digital piano for christmas, so I tried to learn something. Actually in one week I learned to play 25 seconds of the entertainer.
+PeopleCanFly23 That's honestly very impressive, and so in your case, it may not take long to play pieces with high skill level at all!
A great way to get the hand problems that I have. I had a carpal tunnel operation a few months ago and will have another trigger-finger procedure next week. Keep it up, and you'll end up just like me.
The thing that’s so amazing is her consistency!! With speed like that, it’s hard to either keep the speed and not mess up, or it’s hard to reach those notes so fast and still press them hard like that! ❤🎉🎉🎉
I just played the video at 1.5 speed. OW!!!
That was gorgeous! Especially the grimace at the end!😋
That is beyond skilled piano playing right there.
That look at the end - Did you see that? Because I'm not doing it again.. haha
Exactly! Haha

+Finaltits Nah that would be in Bm in 5/4 blindfolded lol

Absolutely crazy. I love the way she finishes with "OW"
This is what happens when I love playing a song so much that I can’t stop... I just keep seeing how fast I can play it, but nothing like this!! This is incredible. “Ow” indeed.
This would bring a tear Scott Joplin's eye. I am always impressed by people who can play this at its original speed let alone at this insane level
It is not right to play ragtime fast
Joplin would hate this, he was clear in saying that ragtime is not meant to be played fast

Andrea Di Marco I have and I'm also working on converting it to midi. I'm not very good at reading sheet music. I started playing piano 5 years ago and I've always played by ear. More recently I joined my high school band playing alto saxophone and now I can read sheet music but I'm still learning.
