- The Turbopower was one of Hoover's most popular upright vacuum cleaners from the 1980s and ran for many years in one form or another. This example is from the second generation Turbopowers when Hoover added a two speed motor and bag check indicator.

Still in perfect working order after 36 years that’s good old fashioned British manufacturing and how vacuums should be made and such a simple clean clever design. Brilliant video Roger😀
To be fair, it has hardly been switched on, so it should be working, although I have had a few heavily used models that still worked.
I remember having the toy version of the hoover turbo power as a child!! This video bought back so many memories.

What a stunning Hoover Vacuum still looks modern in 2020. The classic 80s smell of that freshener came back to me as soon as you cut open the bag.

I lost count of the amount of turbopowers we went through in our house, mum used to kill them in around 6 months, but instead of getting it repaired she bought a new one and gave the old ones away to the guy who ran the vacuum repair shop, he used to recondition them and sell them, I’m like my mum and vacuum countless times a day, mum swore by the turbopower range for the dogs hairs, the only other vacuum that could cope with the amount of dog hair in our house was her old junior 1012, the hoover was never unplugged and stood in the corner of the lounge ready to go , they were used about 8-9 times a day sometimes more, as soon as she got up she would hoover then just before she left for work, then I’d do it as soon as I got in from school then again normally twice before mum got home. Then she would do it when she got in, then after dinner then after sorting the kitchen and
Putting the dishwasher on, then after we been out with the dog then before she went to bed, on her days off if she went out she would
Hoover as soon as we got back lol, I think we had every model of turbopower but the one we had most was the 2332 I think in the end ( if memory serves me
Right ) we had 7 or 8 of the 2332, we had 3 of the glass turbopower the 2336 ( the red turbopower autoflex). They just literally fell

Touch them lol . It was always the handle release bits that went on them so it would lean and the nag doors would pop at the bottom, the original blue autoflex was much better built,
My mum bought one of these when they first came out. She's a cleanliness freak, forever hoovering and it died within around 4 years. She was never very impressed with it and the suction with the tools was woeful. She replaced it with a Panasonic; a much better machine but it also didn't last very long. She then bought a Dyson DC01 and has had Dysons ever since.
Omg my mum used to have one of them with the 2 speed switch and the light on the floor head was a good vaccum x

Like yours Roger it’s still in the box from new as are the accessories and it’s had very little use and almost mint condition
I remember my grandmother having that model, we had the red one with auto cable rewind. Until ours smashed when it fell down the stairs
The red autoflex model was very brittle. I bought one on ebay years ago and it arrived smashed to pieces.

Date of manufacture is Jan 1986 given the date code 601 in the serial number.
The white activators were normally used
On the promotional models. The original early activators were white as well and also the very first few hundred turbomaster had the white activators as well
It's nice when things like this pop up on Ebay. A sealed new in the box turbopower total system sold for around £700 recently.
It did sell for £700 but the winning bidder didn't pay for it and probably had no intention of paying for it. It was re-listed and sold for a more modest £278.69 which is still a lot of money.

Annoying for the sellers, but at least it gives genuine bidders a chance of winning the item again.

@@ibaisaic i rescued my electrolux microlite from my uncles shed it was full of spiders and snails and the floor head had rusted plus the bag had rotted away but i got it out cleaned it up bought bags and a floor head for it and now it works perfectly

The lower cord hook for this model is still available on the hoover candy website in the same colour I have managed to get hold of one but they are waiting for a new order to come in so that was a stroke of luck I also found a non genuine Numatic washable bag hepa rated and this fits the u2332 model at the moment I’m using a non hoover bag a double micro filtration bag which is reusable I think fleece bag over paper is better
I used to have a turbopower like that one but a grey one but it had a broken wheel and a broken belt of course I put a new belt and it work fine and I fit a yoyo on there with tape as a contemporary use and I was gonna get a new wheels for it but no chance and when I was little like 3 I remember i u used to have another one but without the hard case with airfreshners on it it was one of those soft bag ones
So happy to find a new Ibaisaic video on RUclips! Glad you are feeling better Roger!!! Quick question: do those ridges on the agitator actually do anything? It would seem that they would barely touch the nap of the carpet - unlike the metal beater bars of the older Hoovers.
I think the beater pads do something as you can hear a beating action on some carpets. The metal beater bars of older Hoover uprights were much shorter than the brushes, yet they still caused a vibration in the carpet. As long as the carpet is not stuck down and is lifted by the suction, then the beater bars/pads should serve their purpose of tapping at the pile to release the dirt.
ibaisaic I see. Thank you for that clarification...I’ve always felt that a cleaner’s brush strips are actually causing a beating and vibrating action themselves anyways. Keep well Roger! Happy “beating, sweeping and cleaning!”
I have a U2798 in red from around 1993, it's had a new motor and cleans far better than any modern one I have used, specially if you have dogs that go on the shore and bring sand home, the only cleaner besides the Hoover Junior which picks all the sand up.
Electrolux Contour 700 watt and Boss 1400 were never a patch on these turbopower

Can you still buy those air freshener cartouche's? I have a Sears Kenmore branded self propelled model which was actually a Hoover power drive . It has a place for the sent cartridge in the back door but I didn't know if they still carried those.
The air freshener in this video is very hard to get now.

I recall this model in the Coop in Edinburgh having a saltire flag sticker the size of the bag door with Made In Scotland on. A marketing ploy to appeal to local buyers even though the marketing was always Made In Britain.

Hi Roger, great video. Just some observations. Beko1987 has a video demoing a mk1 and mk2 turbopower side by side. Both have a bag check indicator light. His mk1 is 1986 with a green 'Hoover' logo on the cleaner head, and his mk2 is 1988 with a white Hoover logo.
Yours has the green logo and is January 1986 as shown by '601' after the model number. Mine also has the green logo and is June 1987 (706). So with the green logo does that mean yours and mine are mk1? Did mk2 come in from 1988 with the white logo? But, if that was correct, I'm confused why the four position height control button on yours (and mine) has a white painted stripe down the centre, but Beko1987 only has the stripe on his mk2/white logo model.
The mark one Turbopowers were launched in 1983. The soft bag model was in a mink colour, mid range in burgundy and auto flex model in blue. Neither of the hard bag models had a bag check indicator.
