  • Here's a beast of a vacuum cleaner made primarily of a very thick metal and quality components throughout. Quite odd looking but very retro in appearance and looks like it was made in the 1950s, but I think it's a lot newer than that.

    I sold those machines for 5 and a half years. Was ahead of its time. You can reverse the hose and attach the crevice tool to the tubes and use it as a blower. Also, the hair on the inner brush is real horse hair, that’s why it is so soft. The hair is on a metal band that you can pop out of the rubber housing and then keeping it in a blower set-up, you can actually blow out a clogged drain by placing the rubber to the nozzle and placing over the drain hole. I take no responsibility if you cause damage while doing that, but I’ve done it multiple times and it worked for me. Back when I left the company tin 1997, they retailed for $1895 US. The company that built the machine, Interstate Engineering was started in 1942 and originally built airplane motors.

    Oh the memories this vacuum brings! I remember the day the salesman came to my house to give my mom the demonstration. He vacuumed up a box of spilled marbles, sand and even picked up a bowling ball to show suction. My mother, as a new divorcee, was swayed into buying this beast of a machine. I think she paid about $1,500 for it in the early 90s. I hated that dang thing because we had a raised brick foyer separating our living room from the rest of the house, and for an 11-12 year old operating the vacuum, it was so heavy to pick up over the brick. And I always thought it looked silly. Thanks for the memories, as my mother has been gone for 2 years now.

    In 1988 I was a salesman selling this machine. We had 3 days training before being sent out with a demonstration model of the machine (rob w is correct, the first 2 digits reflect the year of manufacture of the machine), and a black pilot bag containing two tupperware containers, one that had sand the other containing nuts and bolts. If I could get my foot in the door and go through my demo pitch, I could sell a unit. And the first thing they taught us was to never call this a "vacuum cleaner"!
    Where you have the part that opens up, our demo model was clear plastic. We had filter paper that we used underneath it to show how much dirt we picked up. This is how we did it: first, I had the lady of the house bring her vacuum cleaner. I would then say, "What do you consider a vacuum cleaning is? You hear a noise, and you see dirt vanishing." I would then put some of the sand on her carpet, pull out my pen, make a noise with my mouth, and swish my pen side to side - the sand would vanish! I would then go over that area with her vacuum clear about ten or more times and ask if she was satisfied that it was clean and she would say yes. I would then put a filter under the lift-up part of the Tri-Star, connect it to power, and go over the area she cleaned with her vacuum but only once and she would see a whole bunch of dirt ... that would usually sell the machine right there.
    It's an amazing machine whose power actually increases as that bag fills up due to something called the Venturi system, a swirling action that increases suction as the area inside the bag decreases. Within just a few weeks I sold more than a dozen or so units before I quit to go to the job I was waiting for.

    Roger, yours is a 1993 model. If you look at the serial # in front, the first two digits tell the year your cleaner was made. TriStar in America is still in business, but they were bought by Aerus Electrolux in the late 1990's & they look slightly different now. You can use a Kirby 301291 knurled upright belt to replace the powerhead belt, virtually identical in size. You are wise to use the Numatic bags in it, just fold the bag over the edge of the cloth bag. The paper bags you got with the cleaner are original, but it's been my experience that they clog VERY quickly, with hardly any dirt in the bag. The Numatic bags, being HEPA Cloth, should work much better. The filter in the back is a afterthought, like you suspected....those didn't come out till the early 1990's, & this design, with little changes, had been around since 1946.

    I have the very same vacuum.....also made in 1993....my parents bought it new for around $1000 Canadian, and I inherited it when they passed.....I'm just about to replace the hose....the first major repair since bought new. It is an excellent vacuum....change your filters regularly (bag and motor) and keep your cloth inner bag clean, and you should get many years of trouble free use....I think you got an incredible bargain.....

    Greetings, this is Pastor Mike of Oregon, USA. I own two TriStar DXL vacuum cleaners. If you bought it for 35 pounds (about $47 US), you got a really good deal. They sell for about $2000 new. That's what I paid for a new one back in 1994. They are very durable and it still works great. I had to put a new motor in it once. To be honest, the newer ones aren't as sturdy as the one you have (it's just like mine),.... built like a tank! You do have to replace parts once in awhile, depending on use. You should be able to get after-market TriStar filter bags (they are best). I bought a second TriStar DXL and still had to pay $500 for it (and I thought that was worth it). I have had many different vacuum cleaners: Kirby Upright, Filter Queen, which I still own, a Dyson bagless, etc. The TriStar you have is the best I've ever had. Don't get rid of it, just keep fixing it! Take care, Best Wishes and, as applicable, GOD Bless. From Pastor Mike Benjamins, Jr. of Oregon (born in Holland). 12-15-19 @ 5:04 P.M. Oregon Time.

    My Father owned this company and now my Brother owns it. You got a very good deal on this machine and it looks very clean. If you need anymore information I am happy to help you. I am still using the one my Father gave me in in 1992 and it works perfectly. You can buy new belts if yours is worn. The Tristar DXL model was made from about 1993 to 1998. The company started in 1957 so there are several different models. You did get a really good deal! I believe the original price when it was brand new was over 1,500.00 American dollars

    We've had one of these for about 35 years and it's still going strong! We liked the quirky retro look and apart from the belts wearing out - as they do - and a couple of connections coming loose through daily use, it's been a good 'un!

    Hi Roger...nice to see a 240v Tristar. The manufacturer is based in Anaheim, California (pronounced anahyme)...which is a large city just south of Los Angeles. It is the home of Walt Disney’s very first Disneyland theme park, which opened in 1955. I would imagine lots of the hotels and motels around Disneyland use Tristars to clean their rooms!

    That looks to be in great condition from how I usually see these.
    These are some of my favorite stranger vacuums that are made!
    The design dates back to 1937 they were also sold under the name compact. And you're absolutely right that HEPA filter is an afterthought as a system is not completely sealed. Tip about the cord if you open the bag you can release the cord as a quick release. I personally think this machine is more elegant than the newer mg to style machines there currently producing. Great video is always Rodger I've added it to my playlist of TriStar vacuums on my channel!

    What a fantastic vacuum cleaner. I have watched a lot of videos about these. What you might be interested is the European Lux brand. They only sell door to door and those vacuums are partly metal. For some reason they never sold in the UK. They are designed like the old Electroluxes, but with modern technology. I have mid 90's Lux Royal D790 and I love it. Very well made, quiet with high suction level. Actually I measured suction and it's in the same level as my Miele C3 powerline with the 1200 watt motor. Lux intelligence is the current model. I see those in the eBay (Germany).

    You got a really condition vacuum for a really good price! It's a keeper for sure! Usually the ones are on Ebay in North America are trashed. I was in Tristar sales training before. So I learned the history, materials(constructions) and performance specs.
    The company started making warplanes(prop type) for the war. When war ended they wanted to make a consumer good. Their research and survey led them to making a good vacuum cleaner. They make fire protection equipment and undestructable plastic hockey gear as well. Hence the wierd looking after filter, like a respirator filter. They used their airplane know how to design the funny looking inlet as you said in the video. The purpose was so the air flows in at a certain degree angle to produce a cyclonic action to prevent filter clogs in front of the motors air suction pathway. Possibly they sold some rights so Vortech Force(Italian) vacuum to make theirs with similar enginnering design.
    I did sales training on the MG2(newer type grey) model, the newest one is MG3(charcoal) I call the MG3 the Lamborghini of vacuums because it is dark charcoal and high performance with a jet engine like shriek. It was sold to door to door sales style. In 2009 it was sold for $2800 CDN. I was so impressed with it, I later got a demo model. Had it for 11 years now? No problems. Tristar's can run easily 30+ years. Filter Queen is another popular brand that last 30+ yrs as well. My mom has a Filter Queen at least 30 yrs and still runs.
    The strong cloth bag(cotton/kevlar) is a catch for the paper bag(collection). Always use the paper bag. Clean the sponge motor filter as well. Your pleated round after filter could be HEPA rated. Possibly aftermarket makes non HEPA, the round charcoal is to remove odors.
    I hope my comments helped you answer some of your questions.

Mine had a retractable electric chord but was too short and was pulled out too far and will not retract any more. It’s a nuisance wrapping the chord up but I don’t have much carpet left so will likely last me my lifetime. Mine came with attachments for hardwood, upholstery etc. It’s served me well.

I am not confident that a new bag will make much difference. The bag doesn't look very worn and if I close the lid, no matter how much pressure I apply, the air leaks all around the lid. Growing up in the 60's I remember my bf's mom had a "Interstate compact" very similar to this minus the "carbuncle" air filter theirs had just a flap where the hose could be connected for blowing. Though it came with an air powered beater brush the vacuum worked so well with only the "Magalite" rug floor attachment (one of the first pieces you unpacked) the air powered beater brush (which looked like a swimming pool vacuum head) was never used.
    You can still buy bags and accessories on Amazon at reasonable prices.

      They specialize in making firefighter mask filters(filter media) and hockey gear(plastics). I am familiar with the MG2 and MG3 specs. They have a magnesium metal body, bowling ball plastic for the wheels, unbreakable plastic for the shafts and handles. Kevlar and cotton catch bag. The air that flows into the vacuum body at a 30 degree angle(airplane know how) that causes a cyclonic flow. So it doesn't block the filter flow in front of the motor suction.
      It's good to use a disposable vacuum bag in the catch bag.
      Maintenance items is catch bag should be cleaned, motor foam filter should be cleaned, after filter should be replaced once a year.
      Hope my info helps!

    We have a few. The design originally predates WWII, obviously.
    Extremely good performers with HEPA bags, of course they do look weird.
    The power handles always crack.
    In a harsh environment like one of our shops, these last.
    After Electrolux bought them, they lost a lot of quality. This one is original - early 90's, I think from the condition of the electrical cables. Always a weak point on all power nozzles after 30 years or so.

    You shouldn't have cut the paper filter; it fits on top of the cloth filter very well. I know it's little bigger but it will do the work. I think the belt is okay as it is rotating the roller brush freely. I think the strange noise is due to the paper filter, it's not in place.

    Actually roger the wands are supposed to have that notch sticking out that you thought was damage. It is to allow easy assembly of the wands without pushing the button manually. The power head cord you can find on eBay cheap. Bags and all parts are plentiful and honestly these machines are work horses that are cheap to maintain and quite powerful.

    • @excelsior2708
      @excelsior2708 4 года назад +1

      Also, you will find the machine is more powerful if you remove the “butt plug” filter. For some reason those filters restrict the airflow quite a bit. Kirby belts are a perfect replacement belt for these powerheads. They are a timeless machine here stateside. They are powerful, very capable cleaners and will give most modern cleaners a run for their money. Get creative and try different power nozzles. They work amazingly well with a sebo ET-1 power nozzle. These old beauty’s are becoming more and more rare. The new models are not near as powerful.

    I used to sell these machines. The TriStar is an American product (remember reading the labels ;-) ). The first two digits don't necessarily indicate the age. I bought mine brand new in 1998 for $1,200 (about $2K in 2018) and the serial # begins "94..." You almost received one of the best vacuum cleaners ever made. I'm not saying that from a biased point of view. I spent a lot of time (way too much time) testing this machine against others. Except for the whiny complain I heard from people that it's a canister, I've never seen any machine clean better. To those who prefer an upright, I say "clean your car interior with both and get back to me." The reason I say "almost" is because the Turbo Brush you received is from an older CXL model. The DXL is the last model produced before it was completely redesigned for the 1999 release. The DXL Turbo Brush was equipped with a cog belt that never slips and a small circuit board that would shut off the motor if something got caught in the roller. I've used my TriStar like a rented mule for 20 years and it still performs like new! I've never replaced the belt in the Turbo Brush.

    It is cyclonic Roger I think. As far as I know it's an open bag and the dirt is pushed to the sides like the cyclones in a bagless to keep the airflow strong. But I could be wrong :) It's a very solid cleaner though

      @2711marcus 6 лет назад

      I like them too. What is the suction and airflow like?

    • @robwalton2007
      @robwalton2007 6 лет назад

      Mark, the TriStar is NOT cyclonic at all. They claim that they are, & the dirt swirls around & falls to the front of the bag, but that's utter rubbish. Look at where the hose intake is, then look at where the dirt falls in the bag, & it's plainly obvious the dirt simply drops there, nothing cyclonic about it at all! Just marketing BS.

      @@2711marcus You can upgrade the motor.. It is a standard "Amteck" motor and you can purchase a decent 9 amp version to gain more suction. The original vacuum in 1937 had a 500 watt motor.
