Chateau Tongariro, also known as the Grand Chateau, is a New Zealand hotel and resort complex, located close to Whakapapa skifield on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, It is close to the volcanic peaks of Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, within the boundaries of Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest. The building was completed in 1929 and, despite extensive refurbishment, still retains much of the style of the pre-Depression era.
HistoryEdit
In 1887 the Paramount Chief of Ngati Tūwharetoa, Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tūkino gifted the tribe's land - including the sacred mountain peaks of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro - to the people of New Zealand. The gifting was to ensure the area's protection for all time, for all people.
In the early 20th century, the approach to Whakapapa was only for the fit and strong. There were miles upon miles of wild country to cross on foot or horseback, wild rivers to ford and mountainous terrain to navigate. Climbers Bill Mead and Bernard Drake imported the first skis seen in the North Island in 1913, and in July of that year were the first to attempt to ski on Mount Ruapehu.[1] They realised the Whakapapa Valley was "much better than any other area of Ruapehu for skiing as well as for summer parties, if it could only be given road access and huts."[1] In 1919 Bill Mead persuaded the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts to pay for an access road to Whakapapa. The new 'highway' was pushed through towards Mt Ruapehu with the help of labour from the Whakapapa prison camp early in 1925 under the supervision of Dave Dunlop, and in 1925 Sir James Gunson drove the first car to Whakapapa. The Ruapehu Ski Club built a collection of huts which became Whakapapa Village.
Construction:
In 1923, the newly-established Tongariro National Park Board investigated a site for a 100-bed hostel in order to encourage tourists to visit the newly formed Park, but it wasn't until 1925 that New Zealand Government, via the National Park Board, followed up this initiative by offering to lease land and lend up to £40,000 to any private company which would build and operate a hotel on the site.[2]
Rodolph Lysaght Wigley (1881-1946), the managing director of the Mount Cook Tourist Company, took up the option. He formed the Tongariro Park Tourist Company with a vision to build what was at the time known as The Chateau, alongside the original Whakapapa ski huts, on a land lease of 63 acres.[3] To raise capital for the undertaking the company was floated on the sharemarket, where it was poorly subscribed. The company signed a lease with the government on 9 November 1928, a condition of which was that the building had to be erected by 31 March 1930 (barely 17 months away) and that it "cost not less than £40,000 or more than £60,000".[4] Despite only £30,000 of shares being taken up, Wigley let a contact in late 1928 to Fletcher Construction Company, which also involved Fletchers buying 15,000 of shares in the Tongariro Park Tourist Company.[5]
The Chateau was designed by Timaru-based Herbert Hall (1880-1939), architect to the Mount Cook Tourist Company, who modelled his design on the Canadian Resort of Lake Louise. Influenced by the hotels built by the Canadian Pacific Railway such as the Château Frontenac, he designed a neo-Georgian structure of four stories and basement.[3] The style of the building was not European, despite its name, but American Colonial Revival, a variant of the Georgian Revival style popular between the wars.[6] It is possibly the only building in New Zealand made of reinforced concrete but designed to resemble a traditional Georgian brick building.[6]
The foundation stone was laid on 10 January 1929. Fletchers used a workforce of 120 carpenters and labourers, offering an incentive of free accommodation and a free suit to workers who stayed until the completion of the project. Most of the labourers were recruited from the Waikune Prison, which was the closest neighbour to the construction site. The building was open for guests by 1 August 1929, even though it was still unfurnished. It was officially opened on 13 November 1929 with Fletcher Construction still owed £28,000.[7]

I love The Chateau! Did you ask about the haunted rooms? When I went to book there they told me they don't allow guests to stay in those rooms anymore, but its possible to look around. They're all on the 3rd floor and I think the room that's most haunted is the one that a nurse died in. She was a nurse for when The Chateau was temporarily made into a mental asylum. I've heard a few stories about The Chateau, but the Waitomo Hotel is supposed to be more actively haunted, its a shame that hotel isn't open anymore.
Yes, the Haunted subject was dismissed quite quickly when Mentioned, I thought I would not focus on that in this video, I did a earlier video today before the Chateau that was very much focused around paranormal so I thought I'd leave that one to entertain the viewers

Awesome hotel. Great video
Awesome thank you again for watching, It's such a beautiful place 🙂🙂
I was at the Chateau back in 2005, on my honeymoon with my husband. I enjoyed the lounge atmosphere--the music, and playing pool. I cannot recall what room we stayed in and we did not know anything about the haunted stories. We stayed a couple of nights. We must have been on the 3rd floor as I remember we were high up in the hotel. I loved the beautiful, dark built-ins in the room. Strangely, there were weird flies and humidty in the bathroom, that never went away.--the AC in the bedroom did not have enough air flow to cool the room down. I remember after my husband had fallen asleep, I decided to stay up and watch some TV. But, I started feeling eerie in the room for some reason and felt uncomfortable. I had to pray that all was well and that I would just fall asleep and not worry about what I was feeling. Thankfully, I woke up and told my husband about it. We decided to leave that morning to another hotel.
I must say another "grand" video!! Thanking you once again. 🤙🤙👊👊
Yes I did rather say that word alot lol

Thanks for your video. Sadly the Chateau is being closed for good from this Sunday 5th Feb 2023. Supposedly the need for earthquake strengthening under the government's regulations has made it impossible to remain open.
A real tragedy for all the Staff, the surrounding area, visitors overseas and domestic and NZ as a whole.
It was paid for by the taxpayers of NZ and built by Fletcher Construction, an historic firm which itself is now gone.
It would take a miracle for it to be saved now.
We never got the chance to stay but had lunch there as part of a Steam Rail excursion from Feilding.
Maybe next time I'll be doing a abandoned exploration at the building, Thank you for watching and commenting 😎👍
There's also the fact that the management were being investigated for serious bullying offences through worksafe. The seismic thing is a smokescreen. I have a hunch it may have closed in an attempt to avoid serious charges. I hope those shitheads get what's coming to them.
Love this video bro!! You are officially my role model, I'm learning lots from your videos man!
Thanks man, I'm glad you like it 😁👍🍻
I first saw snow ❄️ here when I was about 8 years old back in the 80's!! ❄️🌨️
Awesome, such a cool place
@@TheForsakenExplorerNz Very nice vid, especially the attention to the furniture detail (the lion paw hinge is amazing!).

I use to go there before about 2 or 3 years ago and i was an amazing beautiful lovely history mansion building but loving that place and National park nz
Thank you for this video The Chateau is a gorgeous place. My high-school had a camp closer to there so I visited the area in the early to mid 1990s. Bern onside the Chateau and stunned by the interior and outside. Plus tramped to the top of Tongoriro and slid down top of Mt Ruapehu with our raincoats and rain trousers. Great memories. Much love ❤
Yes it's Wonderful, my first time there, although a few years ago I did do the Tongariro Crossings walk, was awesome, Thank you again for watching and Subscribing to the channel 🙂🙂

Wow that's an awesome piece of history, Thank you for sharing 🙂
Tuwharetoa were in the Tartarian Empire?
Foundation stone laid January 1929. Open to public around August 1929. Fully completed November 1929. I find this construction timeline to be... impossible.
Very interesting, Thank you for sharing
Tartarian building for sure
The main building was built in 1929 with the two side wings being added much later on
