Thanks for the "several days later". My wife was wondering why this took me so long with a wall-mount.
The special tool didn't work, but the principle of it told me what to do. I took the philips screw that originally was mounted in the cartridge and screwed it back in all the way, then pulled it with pliers. FINALLY came out.

fastest way to remove old cartridges is a hot air gun, I use a blow torch for 5-10 seconds , then a lil wiggle pull with vice grips and bam !! slides out fast keep a lil spray bottle to spray and cool afterwards

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for your wonderful video! In my case, I have a 24 year old installation but it took only an hour to replace the hot water cartridge. I cheated by using a little bit of WD40 to make it possible to twist and pull the old cartridge out (we don't really use the tub and definitely not drinking from it). My faucet looks exactly like yours and the cartridge number is 1248B and the Moen tool model number is #14272 like everyone pointed out.

I now see why I'm stumped with changing out the cold water side cartridge. I don't have the retaining nut removal tool. I'm not looking forward to tackling this change out now. Wish me luck....
