Hey bro I applied last week for the Chevron Operator Trainee in El Segundo, CA. I received an email today stating that I passed the SHL Operations Assessment test. I received this on that part of the email “ Your application will move to the next step in the application process. The hiring manager will review all applications and select a limited number of candidates to interview. If selected, you will receive an invitation to interview. You will be notified after the selection process has been completed if you were not selected. “ Did you get the job? Man I hope I can land a position, sounds like a good job.

@@Michael_cgx This could mean that this company plans to split up a hiring class. For example, 30 candidates were selected for hire after the interviews. One class of 15 operator will start soon and begin their onboarding process/ training. The remaining 15 candidates will start usually 3-6 months after the first group. Hopefully this is your situation.

I didnt shave... my current employer at the time would have known something was up... In the interview Big boss asked me how attached to the beard I was... I offered to shave it of right then and there ... been an operator for 5 years now
Wassup wells, I have a interview at chevron Friday I was researching tips and came across your video. I didn’t know you was a operator. This Lucky I graduated with Omni you probably don’t remember me 😂
Thank you! You can answer that question using your educational background or family experiences day to day. Keep it simple and short, no need to over talk while answering this question.
Yes if you want to get the 2 yr associates degree. There is a ptech certificate that doesn’t have basics such as college algebra, English, history, etc.. just all P-tech classes
On an interview I had for my current job, I was asked, If you witness an employee doing something unsafe would you tell your supervisor? I feel like that's a catch 22 question. How would you answer??
Depends on that company’s policy. Certain actions are that extreme to where you have to speak up. My answer would be “I would first stop my coworker and handle the situation between us. Explain the importance of doing it the right way and show him/her how to do it. Hopefully this solves the problem.”
What is the typical turn around time from application to interview with all going well. At the one month mark with radio silence from all I’ve applied to (around 10 or so plants) but one. Waiting to hear back to schedule a second phase of testing. Recent graduate who is trying to get into this career field.
It really depends on the company, I would say 6-8 weeks. Usually there is 150-200 candidates that interview over a 2-3 week period then after that decisions are made from operations, HR, and management.
This was super helpful as i am starting my hiring journey to work in the industry! Would you happen to know what kind of information i can put on a resume for someone with no related experience?
Its a combination of both technical and behavioral questions. In my experience, its 60% behavioral/ situational questions and 40% technical or job related questions.
When i applied my resume was strictly salon jobs since I’m a hairstylist and applied as a process operator on a whim, so you should be good with your current resume as long as its a well written one!
You should do some videos over table top exercises for the refinery hiring process. I just went through one for the first time and thankfully I passed, now I’m preparing for my structured interview in a couple of weeks. Your videos are very informative
Hey t wells i have a question how would you answer telk me about a tike you disagree with a manager ? This question been really getting to me, thank you
Disagree with a manager, I would I express my concerns, find a middle ground, resolve the issue or situations best I can, and then come to a resolution that serves both parties. If not, I would talk with HR. I will make a video on this soon
Ok im on round two of the interview process been taking all your advice they said for the board panel there going to ask alot of technical questions 😮 I have worked in the plants my whole life I have the degree but can you go over a quick review of technical stuff 😅 ALSO if i wear makeup to the interview do I give off the impression im too girly to turn my own valves?? If i dont wear makeup does it look like I didnt even try for the interview? HELP
I’m glad to read that you made it to round 2 of the interviews. The technical questions mostly likely will be “How do you prepare a pump for maintenance?” “Do you know how a compressor works?” “Can you explain how distillation works?” Those are just a few examples. This usually covered in the Process Technology programs. I’ll try to make some more videos on this topic after I’m done with this shutdown I am currently working. To answer the make up question, I would suggest looking presentable. Not too glamorous because the job is blue collar. Hopefully this helps?
Yes Its possible, I have worked with people who do not have a degree at all and I have worked with people with 4 year degrees that have nothing to do with the oil and gas industry. I'll make a video this week about it
@@davidbrooks5686 Here in the US there's only on Process Technology certification or degree that I am aware of. Your experience will help you out a lot. Offshore is the highest paid here in the US
Not sure what all the water operator license includes. I’m sure it helps more than hurts your chances of landing a job here in TX. Also, if you have experience operating pumps, valves, compressors, and other process equipment then this will help you
@@winningwithwells thats really good advice, I have the opportunity to move over into maintenance and then take it from there. I appr the response, Thank you alot.
Yes I do, you will be a group setting and there will be a panel watching you and group perform operator job duties on a table with small pumps, tanks, valves, etc. Also it will be timed as well. Hey man, I got interview this Thursday on 28th with one of the companies in Louisiana on catalyst operator position. What do I expect from they interviewer? Like some tips. Plz
I just found your channel, I hope to benefit from your videos. I greet you from Azerbaijan. 👋👋 I am currently working as a field operator in an oil refinery in my country for 1 year. I Marathon Petroleum or I want to work as a field operator in Motiva oil companies. What processes do I have to go through to work for these companies? Please help Wells 🙏🙏
I’m glad you found my channel and the process will vary slightly from company to company. In most cases it will go like this: - Apply for job openings - Pre-employment testing - Group Work Demonstrations or Cobra Test - Interviews - Background checks - Start Day 1 on the job Hopefully this helps.
My GPA was 3.8 when I graduated college. I know guys who had 3.0 GPA that are currently working now as Process Operators. How is your resume? Also, are you applying for internships as well?
@@winningwithwells I think my resume is ok. I don't know anyone that's doing internships. Do you have any suggestions? I graduated last year in December and I've been trying since. Valero in Port Arthur Texas gave me some strange test that asks you questions, for example, what would your employer say about your attendance and work ethnic?, what would your teammates say about? Apparently, they didn't like my answers. I know some Wells from three rivers, I don't know if you some kin to them or not.
do you have any tips on getting a transfer to another location within the company you currently work for? tips like getting the attention of who's doing the hiring for the newly open position that the company sends to my work email address. from what I understand if you're a current employee you're supposed to get the first opportunity at getting the position before it goes public. but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've made sure I've met all the requirements that make me eligible for a transfer as well as meeting all the requirements for that particular job I'm applying for. it's like I'm invisible or something or their not actually pulling the current employee's resumes and looking them over and giving them the first opportunity since I've applied for several positions and there all gone public. all I get back in return is some generic email that they send everybody who applied & and no return email as to why I didn't get chosen for the position ..so any ideas on getting their attention once I've applied for the position.
I personally haven’t experienced this but I know of people who have and were successful. I’m going to try to get them on the channel and let them explain in detail how to successfully transfer within the company. I’m going to try my best to get this done by the end of the month. In the meantime, try talking with HR at both sites to get as much information as possible. Hopefully this helps
In operations, at least here at Marathon, you have to be clean shaven in order to have a proper seal on the full face masks. Far as the interview goes, it shows compliance to this requirement early on. Which could help you stand out.
Tattoos aren’t that big of issue as long as it’s isn’t cult/gang related. Also you can wear a long sleeve shirt to cover your arm tattoos. Hopefully this helps
Finally landed an interview for valero ! After about 100 applications to various plants every year. Super nervous because I've never had a panel interview before , hate eye contact and not a fan of talking to a group of people. I've been working in the oil and gas field doing inspections for the last 10 years . But this upcoming interview is terrifying me
Hey Justin, don’t let this overwhelm you. You have no choice but to go through the obstacles of making good eye contact, talking to a panel, and staying as calm as possible. This is the only way to work for Valero, it’s apart of their hiring process. If want me to have a mock interview with you book a consultation and we get you prepared. calendly.com/winningwithwells/winning-with-wells-consultation
@@winningwithwells I was nervous bro.. Can't lie, they asked me around 8 " so tell me about a time questions " and then they were just going over my resume with me. I think I did well on all of them thanks to your video. I only fumbled around on one of them, still upset about that. He asked me to tell him about a project I completed from start to finish and I just started accidentally mixing up a few of my stories together lol. It was a panel of 6 ppl !!!!! So it was extra intimidating.

They want to make sure your someone who always follows safety protocol and procedures and then after that they will tell you there policies and how that anyone is allowed to stop the job to ask questions or if anything doesn't seem right.
LyondellBasell asked that question.

Do u have to take basics in college if u wanna get a p tech degree.?
Yes if you want to get the 2 yr associates degree. There is a ptech certificate that doesn’t have basics such as college algebra, English, history, etc.. just all P-tech classes
Hey Mr. Wells, do you have one for the cobra test?
Not at the moment, I will look into the cobra testing application and make a video soon as possible.
What about a long sleeve FR? Look like I'm ready to work.
I wouldn’t suggest wearing the FRC to an interview. Dress business casual give yourself a better chance at the job
Hi Mr Wells, i see you’re located in Houston. Do you offer in person mock interviews?
Hello Jason, send me an email and we can try to set something up.
Glad it was helpful! Yes I can, reach out to me through email and go from there.
@@winningwithwells will do thank you so much!
do they normally ask any technical questions or is it more so just situational and behavioral questions ?
Its a combination of both technical and behavioral questions. In my experience, its 60% behavioral/ situational questions and 40% technical or job related questions.

I’m a woman looking to get a Process Operator job, I know nothing about the Oil/Refinery field. Please how do I structure my resume?
When i applied my resume was strictly salon jobs since I’m a hairstylist and applied as a process operator on a whim, so you should be good with your current resume as long as its a well written one!
@@4356cutiepie thank you
You should do some videos over table top exercises for the refinery hiring process. I just went through one for the first time and thankfully I passed, now I’m preparing for my structured interview in a couple of weeks. Your videos are very informative
Great idea!
@@winningwithwells thank you !
Is it possible to get a job without the process technology degree but another one?
Yes Its possible, I have worked with people who do not have a degree at all and I have worked with people with 4 year degrees that have nothing to do with the oil and gas industry. I'll make a video this week about it
@@winningwithwells which ptech cert do you need dude and well done congratulations. I'm from Scotland I'm also interested in the process tech offshore

Can you into this field if you hold a water operator license T1? Just curious if I make the move to Texas?
Not sure what all the water operator license includes. I’m sure it helps more than hurts your chances of landing a job here in TX. Also, if you have experience operating pumps, valves, compressors, and other process equipment then this will help you

I’m glad you found my channel and the process will vary slightly from company to company. In most cases it will go like this:
- Apply for job openings
- Pre-employment testing
- Group Work Demonstrations or Cobra Test
- Interviews
- Background checks
- Start Day 1 on the job
Hopefully this helps.
What was your GPA when you graduated from college? My GPA is 3.0 and I'm having a hard time getting a Process Op job. I can't even get an interview.
My GPA was 3.8 when I graduated college. I know guys who had 3.0 GPA that are currently working now as Process Operators.

Thx bro
You’re welcome, Any time!
do you have any tips on getting a transfer to another location within the company you currently work for? tips like getting the attention of who's doing the hiring for the newly open position that the company sends to my work email address. from what I understand if you're a current employee you're supposed to get the first opportunity at getting the position before it goes public. but that doesn't seem to be the case.
As a felon is this a career I can have!?
Not too sure, it will vary from company to company. Also state to state.

What is the reason for no facial hair?
In operations, at least here at Marathon, you have to be clean shaven in order to have a proper seal on the full face masks. Far as the interview goes, it shows compliance to this requirement early on. Which could help you stand out.
Hey bro what if I have tattoos in my hands and arm? 😅
Tattoos aren’t that big of issue as long as it’s isn’t cult/gang related. Also you can wear a long sleeve shirt to cover your arm tattoos. Hopefully this helps
