  • From IMDB:
There are a few really good reasons why people should make an effort to see this film.
First of all, it is a rare feature film unapologetically set in Saskatchewan that is above all entertaining. More importantly though, it is a good comment on Canadian culture being influenced by American culture in a fatal way.
I found Keir Dullea's character, Rick, charming as the wanna be sheriff of a small Saskatchewan town in the 70s, equipped with a holster, cowboy hat and chaps, and a sheriffs star on the side of his bright red car. More importantly, the town never mocked him, and when they did he would always stood up for himself and beat the crap out of people making fun of him .
In fact, as this dreamer he becomes the only interesting thing in the town which has you rooting for him throughout the film. If you're not reading between the lines of what this film is about though, it's still enjoyable to watch. And in its defence, it was made before the Tax Shelter era, so you can't write it off as a product of those days. It actually took heart to make this film, and it shows on screen.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Director: Peter Pearson
Starring: Keir Dullea, Elizabeth Ashley and John Beck
    VHS Dub

I remember seeing this as a kid in the early 70's on CIty TV and it blew me away. It is still one of the great Canadian films, as there are so few that capture our spirit. It was made with art and balls, back in the day. I am glad you have shared it with the world.

My dad is in this movie. He was the auto body tech that repaired the red t bird after the scene where he was doing a donut with it and made a dust cloud. he smacked into a fridge and took out the rear quarter panel on it. My dad is in the rink scene where they pan across the bleachers and he is the only one wearing a cowboy hat!

Saskatchewan; the place itself, is sort of an independent character in this movie . I grew up in small town Saskatchewan, so the story resonates a lot more with guys like me than it does with people who didn't. I knew analogues of all of these characters in my home town.

Keir Dullea is gorgeous. He makes a great leading man. He's so versatile as an actor. He's still so handsome in his 80s.

Watched this on the old Saturday Night At The Movies in the late 1970's. I remember thinking as things got worse and his world started to disappear Kier Dullea started to really believe he was a gun fighter. Dullea was an underrated actor who was overdue. He had great range, playing a hell raising hockey player on one end to a conservative astronaut on the other. I'd like to see a remake of this considering there is a strong hockey subculture in Canada.

Dear IMDB, I grew up in a small town in Saskatchewan. This movie is about waaaay more than some sociological comment on the influence that American culture had/has on Canadian culture. It's partly about how big fish become trapped in a small pond; it's partly about the sixties, it's partly simply about small towns; and it's a whole lot about Saskatchewan itself. The frequent call of the Meadow Lark which can be heard in the background is like a stab in the heart of true Saskatchewanians.
The film producer would not have been able to attract Keir Dullea (Fresh from "2001 A Space Odyssey") and Elizabeth Ashley, if the script had not been outstanding.
The comment about the lack of a tax incentive to make this film is telling however.

Back in 1978-79, this was played practically to death on HBO, maybe because it was Canadian, a few years old, and cheap. At the Dorm in Herkimer, NY, I think practically all of us watched it together all the way through, and most of us, who had at least a little bit of heart, were reached by this take of lost dreams and lost loves.
Most people don't realize, Gordon Lightfoot's _If You Could Read My Mind_ was written and recorded specifically for this movie.

The titles blew me away with names I recall, after graduating film school and working in Toronto. Les Rose was a powerful personality who I would see talking in the office of CTV Documentaries executive producer, Jerry Lawton in Toronto. Kirk Jones would be spinning 16mm film on a moviola editing machine in the back room of Westminster Films run by Don Haldane and Lee Gordon which did industrial and corporate films. Don Wilder, cameraman and Director of Photography shot Meatballs with Bill Murray and Don was on our college Advisory Board. Lisa Wilder his daughter coincidentally was a friend of my girlfriend, Amy Phelan in Toronto circa 1982. This feature film was a big deal and yet I had barely heard mention of it, post 1976 when I moved to Toronto. These were interesting times and making a living in film was in no way easy- and we were told that at the 2 film schools I attended. Getting a great job offer in Hollywood and moving to Southern California was my way out, but the names in the opening credits stay with me forever. Thank you for this upload.

I was in Grade 9 when this movie came out. A friend of mine wanted to see this movie in 1972. But she was 15 when the movie came out and was turned away from the theater because she looked young. See this move was rated R and only 18 and older could see this movie. Had she looked 18 she would have gotten in to see the movie. I got to see the movie in 1983 on Super Channel back then it was pretty tame back in the 1980's and now.

I am (re)watching this movie with tears because of memories and most of all Gordon Lightfoot`s death on 1st of May
And whats so odd is because i forgot this movie and suddenly when i wanted to go to bed on the 1st of May suddleny "Paperback Hero" struck my mind......
I too had a stroke ......at age of 22..yes 22!
And i am also a "failure" like Rick who lost grip of reality...living in another "world"...
for one i CAN`T adapt to this time we live in now its too far off for me so my "dawn" is also breaking apart!!
I wanted to visit Delisle when i moved from Calgary to Toronto because i wanted to see the place where Paperback Hero was filmed.
Unfortunately i didnt have time when i was in Swift Current to detour to Delisle `cause my car gave me trouble (cracked cylinderhead) and had to be in Toronto in 2 Days.
Yes i made it to Toronto in time.
I like little places like Delisle and wide open spaces.
    Rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot!
You and Paperback Hero will be for ever "Evergreens"

My grandmother was born in Delisle. I wonder if she knew they made a film there. I think I found the building where the mountie on the roof shoots Rick. 1st Street and 2nd Ave. Google won't let me post the URL, sorry. Looks like Macleods is now something called Thunderhead Archers, but the RBC is still there, not as grand looking though. And you can find the water tower fairly easily from there. In fact I'm guessing the crane shot near the end must have been taken from the water tower.

two thumbs down here, this movie is just plain BAD, a story that is so disjointed, it's hard to follow, funny to see all those "stubby" beer bottles, totally vintage '70's, and of course, it couldn't be a "real gritty" Canadian movie without at least 15,000 "ehs" in the dialogue.
