Hey guys! I've been using this idea for the last 10 years, and it's saved me many times from having to break windows, call a locksmith, or have my wife meet me with a spare set of keys. I know some of you will mock or criticize the idea, but again, I've been using it for 10 years and it's saved me many times. It's also just an idea, so take it, modify it, and make a million dollars with it if you really want to. The power is yours.
If I get locked out of my car and there's a kid inside, pointing and laughing, refusing to unlock the door... ... That kid is gone for all I care, I can make new ones.
Awesome, Grant! Just checked and the curie temperature for different grades of neodymium magnets ranges from around 212F (100C) to 400F (200C) and further checks showed that some parts of the car underneath get hotter than that. So maybe look for a place after having driven for a bit, but be careful not to burn yourself. PS. I hope your wife wasn't hurt. If she was, give her my best wishes.
Great project. My dad always kept a key attached via magnets under our cars while I was growing up. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact set up....there were no vitamin bottles involved, but the key was weather proof and saved my hind end more than once. While it is sort of a no brainer, I thought it might be worth pointing out that one could use the flame from a gas stove to heat the screw driver. I use this trick to heat my off-set spatula when icing a cake. A warm spatula smooths the Italian Buttercream so that it resembles fondant.
Great idea Grant! Those little plastic key boxes are almost imposable to open. My wife got stranded once because she couldn't get the key box open after she locked her keys in the car :( So, great design and awesome tutorial! -Ritchie
SonicDadDotCom Cool, thanks Ritchie. Love your design for the paper rockets as well. I can't wait to get our collaboration videos out. I'm editing the parachute video right now!
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" this video is useless after you have posted it. There are most likely some car theifs watching ur videos, so now they will look for the key under the car, then it will be 100% easier to steal it. thanks. and I know, many will do this.
prebenkul But what car thief goes around looking under cars? I mean this video doesn't mean every car is gonna have one of these so they'd have to look under several cars to get lucky. By the time they actually find someone's keys someone will probably have noticed the man looking under every car.
prebenkul This idea has been around for decades. Thieves aren't going to be looking around for a spare key box especially since there are tons of places you can hide them. He probably put it right under the driver door for the sake of simplicity for this video. Thieves want a quick and easy target. They aren't going to be getting under the car and searching for a magnetic key box. Could it happen? Sure. But it doesn't and these kinds of products have been created and sold almost since the beginning of keyed ignitions.
***** lol until we lose our keys and then can't even push the bike home because it's bar locked :( Or you're ***** and it just gets picked up and carried away from you.
This looks like a fun project but also a really important one. A few months ago my friend decided to wash her car and her 1yr old was in the car and ended up locking the doors. She had to get the fire dept come out and get her door open. She was a wreck after it happened and was so upset. Esp for people with kids, this could be an actual lifesaver. For sure sharing this on Facebook for all friends with kids. Thank you!
ScottJW. Exactly because there are cars with a little button on the handle that you use to open the door from the outside and if you do this and some person presses the button the car will open but they can't steal the car unless they find the hidden keys
Have made a little improvement to my version of this. I used two magnets and had one attached to the side as well, because only having a top magnet meant it wouldn't take much leverage to pull it off from the bottom, a well aimed piece of flying mud from a tyre can do it I discovered
Safi Qureshi Keyboxes have kinda been around forever. People have been making homebrew keyboxes probably for longer than commercial versions have been available.
The problem with this in the time were are in now is that most if not all cars now have keyless entry. This means that if an extra key fob is under your car, anyone can just walk up to your car and unlock the door just by pulling on the handle.
***** I've heard that song. It doesn't really much of the science behind magnets but it does bring to light the singers views and very interesting perspective on the matter.
Step 1 - chew on vitamin gummy bears Step 2 - put car keys in wad of gummy bears Step 3 - stick gummy bears and car keys to forehead Step 4 - enjoy knowing where your keys are at all times
ryanhayn So I finished building the hide a key and put it under my one of my favorite buses. Really, it's not my favorite bus because it was a tie between the 500 East and State Street bus. What do I do now?
Well, I was expecting someone to respond like, "why would you even need to make the hide-a-key if you don't have a car to lock yourself out". I set up the situation for the perfect response. I think I have lost faith in Humanity and RUclips.
Great idea for sure for people who own older model vehicles, many new cars won't allow the doors to lock if the key is left inside or the doors can be opened by calling On Star or the equivalent to your cars brand. This can also be useful for house keys if you have a good hiding spot, if you have a home alarm system then you don't necessarily need to worry about someone getting the key, in that extremely rare event if someone where to find your key then you'll have to change your locks, but if hidden properly and you don't let anyone know about it then you should be fine.
Hey! I just made this project and I wanted to let everyone know it cost me $12+tax from Home Depot. I provided my own vitamin bottle so that cost nothing to me. It looks great, and I hope it'll last as long as the car does! I don't see why it wouldn't! Thanks Grant for sharing this idea with your community!
Except there's like thousands of cars in an average city and the chances of them finding yours after finding a random key on a random road is pretty much 0.
Grant Thompson I am you're biggest fan I broke my arm doing one of you're projects and have done all of you're projects!!!! (All the projects I could do) YOU ROCK!!!!!!!
Many cars these days come with what is sometimes called a "Valet key", it works the doors and ignition only which is all you need if you are in a bind, also there's no need to hide the wireless key fob, by the time you might want to use it the batteries will probably have gone bad. Many years ago I was on a business trip 1200 miles from home when I accidentally dropped the keys in the trunk, luckily a tow truck driver was able to unlock a door so I could retrieve the keys through the fold down rear seat! Now when I travel by myself I always have a spare set of keys on me.
HybridEdits It's very unlikely it will come off, but if you want to be sure, make one, put a couple of rocks in it, and drive it through the harshest conditions you can find. Then let me know how it goes.
I keep a key in my wallet. No fob but it will get me into my car if my keys are locked inside. Better yet, it is on me and not hidden where someone else might find it.
PoppingCobble My wallet never leaves my pocket unless I am transferring it to a new pair of pants. This magnetic bottle could snag a tree branch and disappear.
tetsubo57 For just a key, probably don't even need a container... ziptie it to a hook under the car or wrap it tightly in a thin plastic like saran.... use a suitable glue to permanently attach plastic to bottom of car. Cover with a piece of magnet sheet for extra protection. If you ever need to access key, remove sheet, and use fingernails to rip through the layers of plastic, until the key can be pulled out.
I would wire twist-tie the key under the car instead. Zip tie sounds good, but only if you know that you will always have a sharp object to cut it loose with. I used one of those spare key boxes for the spare key on my truck. I stuck the magnet to the C channel from. The magnet didn't hold very long (I checked on it months later) under everyday driving. A plastic bottle big enough for your key and your keyless entry fob (and whatever else you have on the key ring) doesn't look like it would hold up less.
Awesome video. My dad drives a big rig and he leaves the keys in the ignition. Sometimes he forgets to take the keys out. So I will definitely be making him one of these.
+youreanonshareer It's not really the likes that make people stay making videos, just if they want they make 'em, but it's always kind to leave a like anyways, lol.
The reason it could “only hold 25 lbs” might have something to do with the fact that its point of contact was on the side of the weight where it has curvature. Reducing the surface area it can grab onto
I once used one of those store-bought magnetic key boxes to put a spare key under my car, but some time later, when I needed the key, it had fallen off. So it would be worth it to make your own with a much stronger magnet.
No, the 3rd gen Teslas will not have aluminum frames. Plus with Teslas key fob like almost other luxury brand, you can't really lock the keys in the car.
Well here in Turkey the police have these sticks with a mirror to look under the cars for bombs. I'm really curious what they would ask me when they see this under my car
I really like the idea of camouflaging a bottle and add a magnet to it. I believe when you say your wife crashed but the bottle was still there, even though I am not sure. Here the road is really bumpy, and I am actually afraid the repeated motion may make it wiggle and fall off over time. The bottom looks flat though..I think that if I used a second magnet and glued it on the bottom, it could even sustain the bumps a jeep is exposed to in a mountain road. All you gotta do there is stick it between two steel pieces and it would be even stronger
Stuff like this is why I followed you for so long...
And will continue to.
You WILL be missed.
Why what happened!?!?!

I keep a key in my wallet. No fob but it will get me into my car if my keys are locked inside. Better yet, it is on me and not hidden where someone else might find it.
Well your keys would be on you at all times ideally, but you could just as easily lock your wallet in the car as a set of keys

Heres a smart idea. Just dont be an idiot and dont forget your keys.
but thats way to easy
that was awesome
lol people are not perfect, every now and again people forget things
Just clip the keys to your belt loop
Or rather dont have kids.
+TheSmilingSun Agreed.

Little too late for a abortion..
Unless you forget the kids in the car for ~3 weeks in the middle of a forrest.
What if a robber saw me hide that thing under my car?!
this truly most legendary hero thing I've seen
Was looking for somewhere secure to keep my keys when away from my car and not wanting to carry them with me, great idea, will do this.
