No lift shift. You want to retard the timing between shifts to slow the engine down quicker, making the shift faster. You can do that with any transmission. What you heard was the exhaust pop from the ignition retard, then the engine was still at too high of an rpm so it took forever for it to match the transmissions gear speed so the clutch slipped until it matched.
