Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!
Join me as I take a relaxing trip with Grand Central, one of the few open-access train operators in Britain. I travel between London and Sunderland on a classic "Intercity 125", a design I rate so highly I place it on a par with Concorde. The Intercity 125 saved British Rail from complete obsolescence in the late 1970s, with its super-pragmatic and simple design, rounded off with distinctively British cab ends. These trains are still workhorses in Britain over 40 years after their introduction, thanks to their simple engineering and excellent passenger comfort.
    Enjoy the video!
Who are Grand Central? (credit to Wiki...) Grand Central is an independent open-access operator of train services in the United Kingdom. It has operated passenger rail services on the East Coast Main Line from Sunderland to London King's Cross since December 2007; and from Bradford Interchange to London King's Cross since May 2010.[2] It is a subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains.
Grand Central connects Yorkshire and the North East to London with two routes.
Five daily services on the North East to London route run between Sunderland and London King's Cross calling at Hartlepool, Eaglescliffe, Northallerton, Thirsk and York. This route is known as the North Eastern service. Grand Central has in the past given names to two trains on this route. Contrary to tradition in British named train services, these were individual one-way trips rather than not pairs. In the 2008 timetable, the name The Zephyr was given to the early morning (06:41) departure from Sunderland, while the evening (16:50) train from London was called The 21st Century Limited. As of the 2012 timetable, these names are no longer used by the company.
Four daily services which run on the Yorkshire to London route operate between Bradford Interchange and London King's Cross calling at Halifax, Brighouse, Mirfield, Wakefield Kirkgate, and Doncaster. Some services also call at Pontefract Monkhill. This is known as the West Riding (or West Yorkshire) service.

Sunderland Station is pencilled in for a refurb, but I will believe it when I see it happening. This is a hub station for regional trains, intercity trains and the Tyne and Wear Metro system - in dire need of a 21st century facelift.

Having lived in both Sunderland (born and spent a couple of years there) and Thirsk (teen years and developed a love of trains), it was nice to see both stations. I remember Sunderland station as being very dark with shops above it. There was also a line to Durham branching to the south west at the south end of the station. There was also a bay platform for a few coaches from a mail train.
Thirsk had all four platforms in operation, depending on the train and time-table, trains would stop at any of the four platforms. The center two platforms where the up and down fast lines. The outside platforms were the down and up slow lines. Now all that exists is the outside up and down slow platforms. Many a happy hour was spent on the platforms of this station watching a parade of express "Deltic" hauled trains go thundering through the station. There was even an old steam locomotive doing the occasional switching jobs around the small goods yard, the coal bridge and handling the small amount of traffic (freight only) down the branch line to Thirsk proper (about a mile east of the station). At that time all local traffic north and south was mainly handled by two car diesel MUs. Seeing the Great Central's HST 125 stopping at Thirsk was a treat; a real boost in service to a smaller regional town.
Often wondered, Paul, how do you afford all these trips. How do you have time to work for a living?

I watched this video with interest because I have a great Internet friend who lives in Sunderland and I'd like to visit him one day, so I may be on that train in the future, who knows? Also, I'm Brazilian and it was nice to see some planes from my country's industry so far away. Tucanos are now also being flown by the "Esquadrilha da Fumaça" (Portuguese for "Smoke Squad"), the Brazilian Air Force's aerobatic demonstration team with smoke trails. They're great to watch.

Interesting. The buffet decor reminds me a bit of the Bulleid Tavern Cars of the 1940s! Interiors look comfy, although it looks like there's little or no airline seating - I like a table to spread out at and work on when it isn't too busy, but I prefer airline seating for privacy if I'm travelling alone and the train is full enough for me not to get a table to myself.

It may not seem like it but Sunderland was actually world re-knowned for it's ship building, ceramics and glass over the centuries. It is very historical and old. Much was destroyed during the bombings of world war 2 and is a former shadow of what it used to be. The first electric lightbulb was invented by Jospeh Swan of Pallion, BishopWearmouth, Sunderland, and the first was installed in his house in Gateshead just down the road. Now i know alot of people would say Eddison invented the lightbulb but in fact, Eddison tried to sue Swan for it but was thrown out of court as Swan had in fact, patented the lightbulb 18 months before Eddison tried. Both joined up and created the Eddiswan Company and Swan permitted Eddison to have the North American Patent. The fact is, many are taught Eddison invented the first electric lightbulb but this is infact not true. Other invention is the safety lamp, the predecessor to the Davy lamp, aka Clanny Safety lamp. Trafalgar Square we have here, the true square, where the injured from the battle of trafalgar would be treated. Ships were built here for many things from war to shipping freight. Far more well known than Southampton in it's day for ship building. There are round blue plaques all over the town and when visiting, you should really take in what they say as there is an awful lot of history in the town, some say city now but for the true local, it is still a town. We should not forget the mining also, the Stadium of Light Football ground, not the former Roker Park, is situated on a former mine and the gases are ventilated out for safety reasons. Out the front near the way in for the swimming pool next to the Stadium of Light, you will also find a replica of the safety lamp to highlight the historical significance. Now you know why it is called the Stadium of light, home to SAFC, The Black Cats. Alot of history is passed by by lots of visitors so you really MUST be aware of your surroundings.

I agree the Eric. Last place I would want to be is in a coach with a school trip, and I am a teacher. But it does remind me of a Youth Hosteling trip I took with approx. 10 other students to North Wales. Also in Canada I remember being part of a youth business program (Junior Achieverment) which took a trip on CPR from Winnipeg to Calgary. In this case there were enough of us to warrant CPR adding an extra passenger car at the head of the train, just for us. Keep us away from the regular passengers!

Grand Central "An Arriva Company" - Arriva of course being a Sunderland-based company, used to be known as Cowies when it mostly sold cars before expanding into public transport, making it one of the biggest bus operators in Europe. Tom Cowie, who made the company what is after taking over from his father, was also Sunderland football club chairman for a while back in the 80's. Sadly, like every UK company, sold abroad and is now owned by Deutsche Bahn.
If only the UK could actually stop selling its companies that would help.......

Great video, and the First Class of Grand Central looks.........first class! Only gripe (well two, and perhaps I'm being abit pedantic here), but for First Class you expect more .....such as the juice to be in a glass rather than single use plastic glass, and maybe a cup and saucer instead of a mug??
Pedantic yes, but it's little details like this that First Class should adopt if it wants to get everything right. Detail matters when you're paying more for a better grade of service. I'm not bring snobby here, it's just what you would expect from paying a premium for your ticket.
I bet in France and Germany they would use actual glasses, and cups & saucers in first class. Not for the whole train, but when the tickets are astronomical you do expect it to be reflected by little details that disguise first class from economy class.

However, I wonder if it's worth it to go 1st class. The food doesn't look all that great--and that dirty menu! Everything looks so gritty compared to Japan.

A very typical,British railway thing--lowering the window and opening the door from the outside. Here in the US,if an Amtrak passenger were to open the window of a Superliner carriage at speed, the conductor would make it clear that behaviour wouldn' t be tolerated.Disappointed that your food and drinks(even Coke!)are NOT compilimentary--to me First Class should include food service--where was the train headed from Sunderland? Looked like there were passengers waiting for your trains' arrival

+Jason Moors Hi Jason. GC has very discounted fares, and in Europe "First Class" tends to mean "a bigger seat and better surroundings" - getting an inclusive meal is definitely the exception and not the rule. The HST is now the only mainstream train in this country which requires you to lower the window to open the door. Every other train has power doors (and HSTs will be retrofitted with them soon anyway, which is a shame!). The train terminated at Sunderland and from there it goes empty to Heaton where it waits to form the return working. The passengers on the platform are waiting for the very frequent Metro service which uses the same platform, towards Newcastle. :-)

I agree that first-class should include food and drink (soft-drinks, tea, coffee). I know that here, in Canada, VIA first-class does include all meals. Of course it is expensive!!

I love your train series! I live in the US and was wondering if you could please do an Amtrak Auto Train trip report? Also, when it comes out in 2021, could you please do an Amtrak Avelia Liberty trip report?

    Hi Paul,
Great report as usual, love it how you mix flights and trains, when you are walking through airports and trains, how do you hold your camera, do you use a phone accessory, tripod, chest strap etc or is it just hand held

You produce some fantastic, entertaining and informative videos. You have a huge subscription - may I venture to ask - what did you do /are doing in "real life" ? An honest reply would be most appreciated (PS: I doo envy your ventures, they really are much enjoyed by this Octogenerian in his "shed" with suitable "tonic" to hand! (lol)
