If 鳳凰展翅 is translated into English, it is called 'Phoenix Displaying Its Wings.' The introduction is played by pipa (琵琶). Then Sheng (笙) plays a cadenza passage to depict the phoenix's singing The phoenix 's graceful postures and elegant movements are depicted with superb skill of the solo instrument . This is an outstanding Chinese traditional piece , anyway.
This is a very old instrument that was very important in ancient Chinese orchestras. It is unusual to see a woman playing it. If you are interested in Chinese music, look up Twelve Girls Band.. They are all beautiful and play a combination of modern music and ancient music. There is great pride taken with those who play these instruments well. But in ancient China, musicians were considered to be part of the servant class. As a musician myself, I have traveled to China. Their musicians are virtuosos who are conservatory graduates and continue the tradition of Chinese music while also playing modern instruments. They are amazing.
This is absolutely beautiful. I cannot imagine the amount of practice that went behind this performance. The melody is so lively and full of depth. I can feel it in my soul! Fantastic!
Just stumbled on this video come from a video with the Chinese flute in it. What a wonderful and surprising instrument this Sheng is. We'd call it a mouth-organ, this would than be a chinese mouth organ.
that is one crazy looking instrument. very interesting to look at, like honestly first thing that popped into my head was, " it looks like a crazy ass bong or something".
From Wikipedia: The sheng (also spelt as cheng in Encyclopædia Britannica ) is a Chinese mouth-blown free reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes. It is a polyphonic instrument and enjoys an increasing popularity as a solo instrument. It is one of the oldest Chinese instruments, with images depicting its kind dating back to 1100 BCE, and there are actual instruments from the Han era that have been preserved today. Traditionally, the sheng has been used as an accompaniment instrument for solo suona or dizi performances. It is one of the main instruments in kunqu and some other forms of Chinese opera. Traditional small ensembles also make use of the sheng, such as the wind and percussion ensembles in northern China. In the modern large Chinese orchestra, it is used for both melody and accompaniment. The sheng has been used in the works of a few non-Chinese composers, including Unsuk Chin, Lou Harrison, Tim Risher, Daníel Bjarnason, Guus Janssen and Christopher Adler. Some believe that Johann Wilde and Pere Amiot traveled to China and brought the first shengs to Europe in 1740 and 1777 respectively, although there is evidence that free reed musical instruments similar to shengs were known in Europe a century earlier.
Not only she is a great performer she is also really pretty !!! =^_^= I wanted to make a joke how good she is at blowing... but than I thought this type of joke would be not equal to the quality of this performance !
I imagine that it would take all sorts of crazy skill to play that. You'd have to get the fingering right, you have to hold it up, You probably have to be able to do circular breathing, and even if you didn't, you'd still need strong lungs!!! Amazing!

It's what the harmonica developed based on after being introduced to europe in the early 1800s and why it was at one point called a mouth organ.

the instrument is over 3 thousand years old
and has quite a history in China
That was awesome
Parabéns.

a polyphonic wind instrument controlled by the mouth as well.. !

Reminds me a lot of country/bluegrass harmonica. Which is fitting, since the sheng is the progenitor of free reed instruments.
Wow this is amazing
I play the chromatic harmonica, the young child of Sheng 😁
Thanks bath boys :)
笙的声音温柔好听.往往给锁纳伴奏·小时候总·觉得锁纳太吵人
Very well done! :-)

it can be played both inhaling and exhaling. as to the timbre differential - idk - but i think its probably been worked out by design and technique
