  • Walking around Lappeenranta, July 2022, Finland.
Previous walk from two years ago: • Walking around Lappeen...
Lappeenranta is a city and municipality in the region of South Karelia, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the Russian border. It is situated on the shore of the Lake Saimaa in southeastern Finland, and is one of the most significant urban centers in the whole Saimaa region. With approximately 73,000 inhabitants (31 December 2021) Lappeenranta is the 13th largest city in Finland. Lappeenranta is known as a summer city, mostly due to its closeness to the Lake Saimaa, Europe's 4th largest lake.
The Fortress of Lappeenranta once formed part of a defence system that also included the fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki and the fortress of Hamina. The Fortress of Lappeenranta was born and built squeezed between east and west. For centuries, Sweden-Finland and Russia fought against each other. The Fortress of Lappeenranta was constructed as a border fortress after the treaty of Nystad in 1721 when Lappeenranta became the easternmost town of Sweden, and the fortification works were initiated.

Kiitti, hieno video tutuista paikoista ❤Kovasti on ikävä entistä kotikaupunkia, missä koin elämäni suurimmat asiat. Tämä lisää, mutta myös lievittää ikävää.

I'm happy to see again the beautiful city of Lappeenranta! With the harbour area , the sand art , the fortress, the city looks magnificent! I noticed the statue of Kaunis Veera - a true piece of art! And just to refresh my memory I checked back your previous walk from 2020 , around the sixth minute you were passing around the future statue, I mean that was still not ready at this time. A lovely walk in a lovely town!

Thanks again for the nice comment :) It was nice to visit Lappeenranta again. It seems that Kaunis Veera statue was revealed 7.8.2020, so about a month after my first walk. Definitely a welcome sight to the park.

My mom was born and raised here in a big and poor family. Not a happy childhood. She left home age 16 and went to Helsinki to get her Lyceum diploma before she left Finland altogether. She took me (My brother and I were born and grew up outside of Finland) to Lappeenranta for the first time when I was, I think 12 or so. Great memories of seeing my Mummi, meeting my cousin and one of my aunts. We went a couple times in the years after. I wonder if youngsters still gather at the natural swimming pool in summer.. Thank you for the tour! :)
