One of the most beautiful and moving musical compositions ever penned.

I was at this performance as a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (not singing in this section) and am still amazed by the beauty of this song and by that girl's voice. Thank you for posting. I love it!

Erik Esenvald, a latvian composer, made this beautiful peace of music!

All the young critics here should see what they can actually learn from this rendition, led by a man who has more years of experience than all of you combined, leading one of the finest choirs. He made the choices he made for a reason, and while she may be a little different than what you have experienced so far, there is nothing wrong with the soloist, she is lovely, and she is doing the music as written. Excessive criticism will not strengthen you as an artist; it takes away from the joy of the work and it's purpose.

Thank you! This is exactly how I've always felt. I've always appreciated this rendition above others BECAUSE of the soloist and Dr Kempton. I'm embarrassed for people who feel the need to lecture us and criticize the music instead of appreciating it.

Soloist needs A LOT of work. The beginning was VERY flat and too bright sounding. And the ending section was stylistically wrong, almost made it seem like it's a pop tune. Nevertheless, the choir is REMARKABLE.

Erik Esenvald actually wrote the solo to sound like a pop solo. Maybe that wasn't necessarily his intention, but every one of the melismas that the soloist performed was written in the music. As for the bright sound in the soloist and possibly the choir, I would imagine it was to imitate a younger sound and evoke an imagery of children and memories of younger times, as the text suggests. That's just my interpretation of it. But this choir amazes me in every performance of theirs that I've heard!

Andrew Gordon I suppose I just prefer it when it's sung with a Celtic feel, or just somewhat stylistically similar to Celtic singing. It makes the ending melody just so hauntingly beautiful!

Your voice is haunting, and I thought it was totally appropriate for the song! Would love to hear you sing more!

I agree with her voice being bright. I don't think she sang badly at all but all other versions of this song I've heard are less bright sounding and more contemplative. I prefer the ladder but I do think her having a bright, clear voice here makes this rendition unique and makes it stand out from other versions. I enjoyed it very much. What stands out to me more so isn't her bright hopeful voice but rather the lacking bass of the group. That's one thing I have noticed about BYU choirs and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in general is there must be a stressed preference to having a more unified sound and so the bass is there, but rarely stands out. This is all just my observation and in no way a bad thing but I prefer to hear those deep notes. Listen to the Trinity College Choir sing this song, for example, and you will see what I mean. Nonetheless, well done by all in this video. It sounded gorgeous.

The blend in both the choir and the soloist really ruined this beautifully written song for me. WAY TOO MUCH VIBRATO.

Would you approach these people and the soloist and say that directly to their face? If not, why do you feel it's appropriate online? Sometimes it's best to keep our preferences to ourselves.

I would lmao, I would have no problem saying it to her face. I would also have no problem telling her it is a choral piece and that it is meno mosso not a "pop" song.

Then you're missing the very spirit of the piece and aren't worthy of it.

Braunson Garcia it was written that way.

The way this choir sung this piece, I am not a huge fan of. Parts of this were way off, and pitchy. Luther College Choir from Iowa sings it beautifully!

Absolutely crazy that you would write this publicly. Do you have any idea how that comes across?
