How to Set Up a Canary Cage

  • In this video I demonstrate how to set up a canary cage with the minimum cage size for one or possibly two canaries if they are let out of the cage daily to fly for exercise.
    This cage is 18 inches wide by 18 inches deep and 23 inches tall.
    Canaries need a lot of flying space so if you cannot let out your canary on a daily basis then your canary should have a very large flight cage being at 32 inches wide or more

    Great Canary video! I got my first Canary a couple years ago and I tried letting him out and it worked out great. He flies around (99% in the same room as his cage) but, as you mention, he's learned to go back to his cage (in fact, I've even taught him to go back via my hand signals). Canaries are great little birds and they do make nicer pets than most people realize. Mine is not finger tame but he's not very afraid of me. I think letting him out to fly really improves his quality of life.

      @@cypressgazaway4191 canaries dont really need that much as you could think. Cage in the video is like a 5star hotel, you dont have to buy a whole pet shop for your canaries if you want him to be happy. You can feed him seeds, other than that some veggies or fruits (they love apples and carrots), also some greens. You should let him out of the cage as soon as he is feeling comfortable around you and in his new home. If youre afraid that he wont go back, just give him less food so hell be more likely to go back by himself. Feed him regulary, and try to sing something everytime you do so(always the same song). Remember that only males sing, but if you want to keep two of them-buy two females.

      @@ywoisug8845 that's quite an old fashioned perspective. Canaries enjoy enrichment as much as any other bird. Mine plays with toys all the time and hops around his many branch, has he would in nature.

I took out the grill on the bottom of the cage as you suggested. My cage is a good size one and he can fly from one perch to another. This cage is amazing! But I just want to help and tell you some tips! First of all try moving around the toys try hanging them from the side and that stuff! Second please remove the milet since it’s kinda fatty and it’s usually used to training since it can harm your beloved bird if they eat too much from it. Third I recommend adding a 3rd plate (this is optional but it’s great) to add bird chop! It’s really good I recommend it! Fourth (once again optional) Try using stainless steal food plates! It’s good because it doesn’t gather a lot of bacteria and it’s easier to clean! But you did great! This wasn’t meant to be hate I just wanted to help and give tips! I love your content and I hope you found this helpful! *(btw sorry if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes I am still learning English)*

The only room for him could be my room and I am afraid if I could sleep with him. Isn't he too noisy in the morning? At night he would sleep when he is covered by blanket right? As I understand he would prefer a longer cage, he need to wash himself daily, he need swing, play, special food, sepia bone, vegetable and fruit and treats right? An how often should I cut his nails? Can I make a bounder with him without letting him out of the Cage? It is dust dangerous for him? And how often he need to eat some special sand?

    Are canaries smarter and less afraid from human then finches?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 года назад

      Hi, your welcome. All birds can be smart but I find that finches are more skittish of humans than canaries but it depends on the species. Zebra finches seem to be more trusting of humans. It depends on if they seen alot of humans when hatched.
      Canaries can be afraid of humans like finches so it's an individual issue.

    I am trying to learn more about canary care before I adopt in the future. I was wondering if you can place a few fake plants in their aviary? I tried looking it up but I'm not getting any reliable source of yes or no. I did see a suggestion of using fish plants as they are non toxic if the bird were to nip at it. And that it is okay for small birds since they can't consume the fake plant. Just chew on it. But I have no clue. Thank you in advance.

      HI, when the baby is one week old start talking to it and check the babies feet for any debris and clean if necessary. Every day I would pick up the baby for about 3 to 5 minutes and start increasing time as he gets older. At four weeks old talk and hold the baby for around 15 minutes and increase as he gets to 6 weeks. Once he leaves the nest teach him to perch by putting perches low to the bottom of the cage and start teaching the step up and talking a lot to him or her.

    Oh i cant wait to get a canarie when I'm older! Also what is your advice on multiple pets in one household? Like when i get older i want to get a chinchilla, parrot, canarie, a guinea pig two dogs and two cats how should i arrange there cages? Should i keep the birds in one room and the rodens in another and the dogs outside and the cats somewhere else?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  6 лет назад +1

      Hi, it's best to keep the birds in a separate room around from the small pets. Just be careful on which type of birds you will get as you should not keep a canary near a parrot especially if you let the canary out to fly as the parrot may bite his feet if he lands on the cage also be careful with cats around birds. Cats like to hunt birds so a separate room with a door is best. It would depend on on what kind of dog and the dogs pretty drive you get. Some like to go after small critters and birds.
      Keep researching and you will figure it out by the time you get pets.

    I want to get a canary but I'm worried that if I only get one it will get lonely when I go to work.
    How do you keep the quite at night when you go to sleep?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  3 года назад +1

      Hi. Birds will sleep in the night. Keep the room dark and quiet. You could also cover the cage with a breathable sheet

    Is there an easy was to tell if the canary is a male or female? We assumed it was a male because he's the bright orange colour, but he doesn't sing a whole lot. I've read that the position of the eye makes a difference, and I've also read where they say it depends on which leg the band is on. Any suggestions??

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 года назад +1

      Hi, usually the male will sing up a storm. Females can sing but not as good or loud as a male.
      I have never heard about the eye position. Some breeders may place bands on the right leg for males and the left for females but not all breeders.
      The best way to tell is by the singing and behavior.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  6 лет назад +1

      +Glitter islife Hi, congratulations! Canaries should have a long cage. Avoid tall cages as they are usually too small and canaries need to fly the length of the cage so wider is best. 24" wide at minimum. I will post a few links on ideas of cages in a few minutes.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  6 лет назад +1

      +Glitter islife This cage is big enough. I have three of these cages. You have to change the perches. The perches should go from back of cage to front of cage, that way the canary can fly back and fourth. Put the perches far apart but not to close to the end of the cage so his tail does not rub on it.
