    Final fitting of one-piece webbing harness on Backplate (and wing) BC (buoyancy compensator).
    We use the rough rig from the Part 1 video to fit to the end user, diver Camila from Brazil. Camila arranged the purchase and fitting of this rig while she was traveling through Japan. Thanks, Camila!

    When Camila mentioned a 60m dive without a tech course I'm pretty sure it was a reference to a military wreck named Corvetta V17 in Fernando de Noronha. One could argue it's the best dive in Brazil and the local dive operators do something like a discovery tech dive.

    So the belt goes across the belly button area?

    • @DiscoveryDiversTokyo
      @DiscoveryDiversTokyo  3 года назад

      Well, depends a bit on the height of the person vs the length of the plate, but yes that is a good region. Any higher and there is a danger the belt would interfere with breathing. Thanks for the Q!

    Nice to see the final fitting on a person. I’m currently buying all the bits for my own plate and was struggling with the weight pocket question.
    I really really would like to have a “tech” pouch on my waist strap for signaling devices, backup mask, trash collection bag stow, etc. so I’ve been questioning if I’ll be able to even afford the space for the weight pockets. It doesn’t look like I will with the DGX one I’m eyeballing. But worst case scenario the pouches go on the tank straps, right?
    Actually worst case scenario is I spend $10 and get more D rings or pouches. I feel like I’m doing a good job of staying hogarthian. Just gotta do it, dive a pool and adjust, I guess.

      Hi Sous! After trying lots of different setups myself, I'd recommend going to some pocket shorts for SMB/spool and keep weight on your belt in some economical pockets like XS Scuba, which is what I use. Those shorts can be expensive, so some guys I've heard use regular cloth pocket shorts. I might try that to give a test.

    I noticed the wing is not being screw unto the plate, in long run the tank band could cut on the wing's sleeve slots. This is what im experiencing with my Hollis setup and I had to put a book screw to avoid the wing moving around.

    • @DiscoveryDiversTokyo
      @DiscoveryDiversTokyo  4 года назад

      Ah, yes. In this case, Camilla opted for no STA (@ 8:37). This definitely makes for a lighter setup and tank closer to your back, but as you say, leaves more possibility for movement. This is minimised on the HOG wings with the rods they have inside to hold the tank. Hard to explain. 99% of the rigs I build have screw-on STA as you referred to.

    • @francisho3056
      @francisho3056 4 года назад

      @@DiscoveryDiversTokyo my Hollis has the similar rod as tank stabiliser velcro between the tank band. Due to the wing could move around and getting cut by the tank cam, I customised a webbing with velcro fastener sandwich both wings sleeve and the plate via the plate's tank cam insert. By doing so you don't need the STA.

    Nice video. Very informative. Just one question ... I would be interested to know your feelings about an aluminium backplate compared to a steel backplate? Obviously a steel backplate is heavier so the diver would require fewer additional weights. Apart from that, would you say there are any other advantages to a steel backplate? Thanks again for the video.

    • @DiscoveryDiversTokyo
      @DiscoveryDiversTokyo  4 года назад

      Hi, thanks for the Q. Apart from weight, I can't see any other advantage. Some recent offerings do have some cool anodized colors on the AL. I always go with SS, as I want to avoid the need for a weight belt when I wear a drysuit.

    • @sbmillward
      @sbmillward 4 года назад +1

      DiscoveryDiversTokyo .... Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated. Since writing, I have actually bought a SS backplate and wing. I like it a lot. BUT ... I feel a little overweighted!! (29/30 degrees water in Taiwan. No thick wetsuits.) So I’ve just bought a cheap aluminium bp. I’ll be trying it out this weekend!

    Jim, could you do a series on equipment storage? Seems like such simple thing but for example I can’t find any videos on whether we need to keep backplate bcd assembled or disassambled, should we take out and discharge light batteries before storage and what is a proper way of storing regulators (hung vs laid down) for those of us who do not have the fancy scuba man cave (yet). Great series on putting together a backplate rig. I am just starting to get interested into this system after years of diving with soft backplate. My question is about the grommets on the wings; do they need to be screwed on to the backplate for this travel wing or for any wing for that matter? Thanks again for such informative and engaging content.

    • @DiscoveryDiversTokyo
      @DiscoveryDiversTokyo  3 года назад

      Hi Arief. Thanks for the supportive comment. Means a lot to me. Glad you are getting something out of the series. If you are talking about the grommets in the center line, yes, those get fixed to the plate. However, the other grommets at the bottom of the wing are for water drainage and do not attach to the wing.

      Thanks for the comment. Not sure if you're actually talking about the plate or not, but I do like the possibilities of anodized AL. However, especially in the last handful of years as Ive packed on a bit of extra weight, I need extra lead and the heft of a stainless plate. I do see one small maker is offering a nice Brass plate. I might have a look at that. Should have a rustic mariner look to it.

      @@DiscoveryDiversTokyo The backplate colour looks very nice, but I guess once it's in your back, nobody will see and it won't show in pictures. There is not much choice in colours in Europe afaik. The webbing also looks good too. In terms of material, nowadays I prefer AL because it helps my trim, but that is very personal. My steel backplate moves my centre of mass too much forward and I tend to go head down. Would you make a video about donning on / off a backplate/wing system underwater or on the water surface ? Many thanks!
