    I started building a similar one, about 9.5 foot in diameter and 30in wide. Framed with fir I milled, lined with skin of 55 gal drums. Not finished but I think I'll do a friction gravity wheel to drive the drum to keep costs down.... won't need a speed reducer and I should be able to drive with a real small wheel and use a small motor for it. Might use a DC motor on a solar panel, don't know yet!

    Would this work for making buckskin soft and then smoking to prevent it from stiffening back hard?

    How far apart are inside padles? Are they 8 total inside?

    I’ve worked in commercial tanneries and the run speed on your sawdust drum should be adjusted to 16-18 rpm’s

    Genuinely curious, I know that there is some sort of ratio. the height needs to drop to break properly. Would a 4 foot Tumblr like this be able to break a deer hide or would it need to be upgraded to a 6 foot drop?

      A 4ft drop will work, will take longer, but the end result will roughly be the same.

    You know what would be awesome is to include links where you can buy the motor, link, gear reducer, etc

    • @bsoutdoors5895
      @bsoutdoors5895  3 года назад

      Most of this came from the farm store in our area and the gear reducer is old. Not even sure what it came off of.

    Could you tell me the dimensions of the plywood octagon? What’s the length of the eight sides.

      I know it was only 4 ft tall. He has a new one that's bigger. Get on Google and should be able to find an hexagon calculator and that should tell you side lengths and angles.

    Am curious if that tumbler would work as well with a bear hide cause they are so thick and heavy

    • @bsoutdoors5895
      @bsoutdoors5895  3 года назад

      It would, you would just have to tumble it longer. You could also but pieces of 4x4 in the tumbler to help speed up the process. Just check ot every now and then to make sure it's not breaking hair follicles

    If you use a tumbler, you don't have to stretch or salt it?

    • @bsoutdoors5895
      @bsoutdoors5895  7 месяцев назад +1

      The tumbler is further along in the process. Salt and dry is after you skin and flesh the animal.

    How much do you charge for a tumble? I have a black bear I tanned a few years back and I didn't do the best job softening it as it was my first solo hide and it's stiff in some spots such as the face. It's been on the wall in our house and it's so much uglier than my other bears and I'm looking for someone who's interested in some business on softening.

    • @bsoutdoors5895
      @bsoutdoors5895  2 года назад

      Yes you can just have to tumble it a little longer

  • @rhonda122
    @rhonda122 3 года назад

    Does it work on cow hides?

    • @bsoutdoors5895
      @bsoutdoors5895  2 года назад

      It will be a little small but tumble for longer and it should work

  • @TheSchmidt62

    How would this work for buckskin?

    • @bsoutdoors5895
      @bsoutdoors5895  3 года назад

      Works good but beat it for longer or toss in some cut 4x4s with the edges rounded to help break it up
