One crossing i did in 94 on the Arahura was a nightmare. Cars and trucks got damaged. We were being hit in front and side on, getting thrown around like a rag doll. It was the scardest ive ever been. I remember while i was spewing, crying out loud "Please Lord, if you get me off here , i promise i'll be a good boy" Haha! Lol true story.

In April 1968, my then new husband and I were returning from Lyttelton to Wellington after honeymooning in the South Island on the WAHINE overnight in extremely rough seas, an omen for what was to come in many ways.... and on many levels!
The day we arrived home in the Waikato, one week later, came the news the WAHINE was down in Wellington Harbour in extreme weather conditions with the loss of 51 lives.
And for the record, the marriage ended several years later after extremely “rough weather” too!!!

This video kind of reminds me when I was 8 years old my brother and I stole some bigger boys homemade raft and we sailed it from sackets Harbor in up state New York up into the Bay of lake onterio trying to get to our swimming spot up the shore about a mile and the weather got so bad somebody had to come and rescue us I was scared shitless. I still love the water, I just show it a little more respect. With age comes wisdom I hope

I know those waters, We used to cruise all over there intil 9/11 and I've never been back .... Sackett's, Henderson, Chemont, Main Duck, Sodus, Little Sodus, Putneyville ... It's a nice (and quaint!) corner of the World.
Sackett's used to be a major military base and the waged war on Canada from there. I wandered around the old abandonned Madison Barracks before they were redeveloped. History ozzes out of the place and anyone who was anyone in the US Army in the 20th century was there.

In 1995, August I think, my family was onboard a sailing Wellington to Picton.
Almost everyone was sitting on the floor in the lounges.
At one stage all we could see out of one window was cloud....and out of the window on the opposite side of the ship....was water...deep angry grey water.
There was a tremendous banging and crash....followed a couple of minutes later by a PA announcement from the Purser....
"Would the owners of the two cars that were on the upper deck please come to the office"
I staggered sternwards to have a look...the railings were bent and the gates that had been there were no longer....and there was a 2 car sized open spot on the deck inboard......
Ironically the family within metres of us that had boasted how lucky and happy they had been to squeeze on board....on their way to a skiing holiday....came back from the Purser's office much less less happy......

I remember sailing from Lyttleton to Wellington only one week after the Wahine sank in 1968
    Very rough overnight crossing
Kids being sick and porters opening and closing portholes most of the night tipping out bowls of stomach contents
We sailed past the Wahine as we entered Wellington in the morning.
You could make out the top of the bridge breaking the water line and the slurry of oil in the sea.
    New Zealand's worst maritime disaster.

When common sense goes out the window and the management starts ordering Sailings across the straight in anything over a grade seven storm. They're asking for trouble. And unnecessarily putting lives at risk. I watched with sadness standing on the beach at Seatoun helping those who were lucky enough to survive as the Wahine went down.
