Great presentation. I have studied the editing techniques of many well-known astrophotographers. Here is why this presentation impressed me:
    (1) Nick’s approach feels straightforward, logical, and simple. He understands the editing tools available to him and how those tools will best get him to his final destination, and
    (2) As I have learned from my astrophotography ventures, analyzing a scene from dual aspects.....how will I best capture the scene and how will I be able to process it........is vitally important, and finally,
    (3) I could personally invest more time and effort into better foreground image collection when in the field. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of capturing a wicked MW, but working that foreground for good image data is crucial to getting the best image outcome.
Thanks PhotoPills and Great Job Nick Page!! Loved it!!

    MY NOTES (FWIW)
    In Lightroom: (ruclips.net/video/_hX-yIejU_g/видео.html0
    Foreground:
    Reduce Contast
Not too saturated Increase shadows and Blacks a bit.
Go Down to sharpening and increase, to about 25% then Alt or opt while hitting Masking will sharpen everything that's white. (to avoid sharpening noise go almost all the way to the right, to get rid of the noise in the dark areas)
    Decrease the radius to tiny.
Then add the noise reduction (about 30%)
    Remove chromatic aberrations.
Highlight images for blending by highlighting and clicking SYNC so adjustiments are uniform in two images.
    Rt click:
Edit in: Smart objects in photoshop.
In Photoshop : Duplicate: Goto Layer; “smart object” “open smart object via copy”
(if two separate images, you can click on one image, click move, carry onto the second image in the upper right, and release in center of current image. There are now two layers.
Now working on Foreground (starry sky)
Bring down shadows and blacks to increase contrast
    Increase whites
    Increase contrast
Play with temperature (3500 to 3900) Tint is key
Add a little color with the camera calibration tab
Increasing the saturation of one of these channels (red and blue?)
Decrease clarity and texture. Dehaze possibly for more stars.
    Adjust brightness
Graduated filter if needed for darkest part of sky
Go back up to detail and remove some noise reduction if the stars seem too distinct and lonely. (adding some noise back) Adding a little bit of sharpening back.
    Merging the two:
Highlight the top layer and hit alt/option while clicking on the new tiny layer icon at the bottom
Black is concealing the entire layer.
Select a white paint brush and reveal the lower layer (White, 100% opacity and flow)
Now a luminosity mask in black and white allows my to paint the light stuff without painting into the shadows. Need lumenzia mask panel add on, then click the upper right panel. If there is an object you want to exclude or mask that isn't dark enough, you can mask by color (instead of brightness) double click on color conversion layer and select for color preferred while unselecting colors unwanted in mask. Slide back contrast sliders to empasize the mask you want. Then select that with select button in lumenzia. Start painting with white to expose the sky.
Multiple images to blend from LR?
Then open up as layers by highlighting each and right clicking to open up as layers in PS.

  • @wesmitchell8488
    @wesmitchell8488 4 года назад +2

You really slid by one of the most interesting concepts, when you were refining your luminosity mask by boosting some colors and cutting other colors in the black/white conversion layer generated by Lumenzia. There's a whole world of creativity and inspiration there when you start manipulating the colors to improve b/w conversions. Did you consider using the color range or color picker in Lumenzia? It doesn't work real well if you have desaturated colors. also surprised you didn't mention zone express by Blake Rudis. I sometimes use that for color grading.

@Nick Page Incredibly informative Masterclass, but not at all what I was expecting. When I saw that the topic was "Milky Way Photography Post Processing Masterclass", that was what I was expecting. Instead, what you presented was a Masterclass on Luminosity Masks and Layering. It was still very informative, but it was not at all what I was expecting. The fact that most of the images happened to be Milky Way images was almost coincidental to the masking and layers to bring out the best in the other parts of the image. The same lesson could have been given in any situation with a high dynamic range such as sunset at Horseshoe Bend or sunrise at the Mesa Arch. I have to admit, I was hoping for more info on how to bring the most out of the Milky Way itself and to make the Milky Way "pop".
None the less, it was still an informative video.

Sorry you were disappointed with the session, but none the less, that is how I process my milkyway images. I felt that rather than spending an hour talking about adding contrast to the milkyway, I would try to ram more info down everyone's throat on the entire processing of the image, not just the milkyway. Perhaps we should have called this, processing nightscapes, because to me, thats all a milkyway image is.

What a great education in night photography, in almost all the images I have seen here I would have wanted a different composition on almost all the photo's shown *Except fallen tree trunk and a few others . For example in the 'Church' tutorial in my opinion should ideally be landscape FORMAT, comprising of several frames from left to right, top to bottom maybe 9 photo's eg. providing a far larger scale photo, ( as an educational frame it is excellent) but I can see how good your work is but also how it 'could' be so much better. 'In my opinion' that photo does not sit well as a portrait format photo. You are an excellent photographer becuase of the 'risks' you are willing to take, 'photographically speaking' going for things which were unplanned and able to improvise . Your fundementals are excellent because you are producing what 'you' want, ie: natural looking realistic shots and no higory pockery to boot (non composites). A superb discussion, informative but also relaxed with an informal feel. Many thanks. Great video Guys! Thank you Rafael Pons for the 'link' a Nick Page Master Class. To produce the correct format - you would possibly need a flat platform for the camera to be able to move into varying positions on a grid based plane to acheive this idea. With your equipment you could consider adding video/photshop/lightpainting combinations too.

This was a great masterclass. Thanks for answering my question about star reflections in water. I've been a little hesitant to get into luminosity masks, but Nick has convinced me that it's going to be far easier and far better than what I have been doing (i've only been post-processing Photoshop for a few months). I use Lightroom for importing and categorizing my photos, but then I do all my raw file workflow from Bridge and editing in Camera Raw (rather than Lightroom), and Smart Object/layer handling in Photoshop like Nick. Any thoughts on that? Thanks Nick and Rafael/PhotoPills.

I heard the same thing about capture one.. I tried to use it but the roundtripping from capture one to photoshop (which is way way more powerful) is just too clunky.. Lightroom and photoshop are still the best editing softwares out there for photographers regardless of the camera system I think.

@@NickPage First of all it was a very detailed and inspirational lesson. Thank you for that!
In exchange let me tell you that the Noise reduction data (also known as black frame) is included in the raw files indeed. At least the camera formats I'm familiar with (as an ex-software engineer -now product owner- at Phase One/Capture One).
Regarding to how powerful Capture One vs Photoshop is I guess the biggest difference for your workflow is the image blending part. Obviously that is non-existent in Capture One. For single raw file processing I didn't see anything in this video which couldn't be achieved directly in Capture One. Maybe the Orton Effect as an exeption. :)
Anyway, thank you again showing your workflow. I took some notes - not just as a photographer.

@@NickPage thanks for answering. Luminar ambassadors use Lightroom and Photoshop, but they don't use Luminar in their tutorials, for example. You just have to follow the tutorials that landscape photographers offer and they use Lightroom and Photoshop. in my personal case I use both.
