    Enjoyed your video. Too many seem like paid commercials for a particular heater. Yours seemed honest and points out real potential issues that should be checked. Thanks! One suggestion…block up your heater high enough so that the exhaust pipe and muffler is pointing slightly downward so that accumulated moisture can escape through the weep hole in the muffler.

    I have the tall metal unit shown in this video. It worked perfectly straight out of the box, and still does. My only complaint is that there isn't a fuel filter installed or included. I will buy a good filter asap as I am burning furnace oil in it. The exhaust pipe gets super hot so keep well clear of flammables, or better yet salvage the heat through a small solar hot water tank/exchanger.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Год назад

      Yea a included filter would be nice especially since diesel tends to have more debris it seems in it.
      I though about trying to find away to salvage the exhaust heat but for traveling and using a outside unit it’s just more gear to carry.

    If you notice at 4:22 there is a slot at the bottom of the unit..... If you slide your screwdriver through it you will find it is alot easier to tighten the hose clamps for the intake and exhaust....

    I got the low profile Maxpeedingrods model heater about a month ago after being impressed with their generators. It saved my pipes from busting in my well house after the last round of cold weather that recently swept through the states. The Bluetooth app leaves a lot to be desired but the controller is top notch and the fuel adjustments are spot on. I think Maxpeedingrods has the most well made unit of the Chinese diesel heaters. I upgraded the fuel line to hard plastic line, and changed to a quieter fuel pump. You should look into that. Every RV needs one of these!

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Год назад

      Yea I thought about changing the fuel. I still have some primer line I think I can use, I’ll have to see but it’s good at the moment.

  • @kimmer6

    My Vevor tall all in one unit did not come with a fuel filter. After running 12-14 hours a day for months on red diesel fuel, some debris plugged the pump last night and it quit. I added a small engine fuel filter and a new pump, cleaned out the fuel tank and it runs properly now. The fuel pickup is about 3/4 inch off the bottom of the tank. But the sediments and contaminants get stirred up when I refuel it. I put the filter close to the tank such that only clean fuel gets to the pump. The fuel filter is a great improvement. I added an LED light up near the top of the tank by the pump using aluminum foil duct tape. It backlights the fuel level enough to see from 25 feet away. The other improvement was to get a plastic 5 liter fuel jug with a push button spout. I don't spill a single drop with this setup.

    This is a brilliant idea on a location to install one of these. I have a 5th wheel toy hauler and was thinking about putting it in the garage area and running the exhause out the little site ports they have installed for exhausting fumes and whatnot, but your location is one I had never even thought of. My setup is almost exactly the same as yours with a compartment right there under the stairs where my furnace blows out etc. and for some reason I simply never thought of putting it there and its a GREAT IDEA. Now I'm gonna order 2 of these and do it both ways, and only heat the garage when I need too. The reason your spot is ideal for me too is I am setting up a solar system using lifepo4 batteries and I can put those right next to that hose and help keep them warm in the winter as well. Seeing this really changed my plans to something more workable for me in several ways, so thank you for taking the time to make this video.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Год назад

      Your welcome and now that I have done this I may modify things just a little for this winter. As I may move the whole heater just inside that door. Have one more hole through the bottom so the exhaust can go out. This would allow intake air to be several degrees warmer making it run more efficient. I will have to see how I do it but that’s the next idea. Although outside I dont really hear any ticking from the pump. Which I like. So I could always run intake tube to inside storage compartment verses the whole unit. 👍🏼
      Glad the vid helped ya out…😀

      @@johnnysweekends that’s how I am planning on using the unit that is separate components and running the exhaust out through the floor and a gas can on the ground below. I assume the fuel tank can pump up that high if not I will put a table outside and drill a hole and use a grommet to run the fuel line. I don’t want to have the fuel inside with my solar system etc for safety reasons, especially since my bedroom is also right above that compartment.

    I know a lot of boaters here in the UK who have switched to these cheap Chinese units instead of using Webasto or Eberspächer heaters (that are murderously expensive to buy and maintain). I also heard there are tens of thousands of them impounded in a UK port after a few user mishaps. As with anything, they need to be installed correctly... so videos like this are a public service.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Год назад +2

      Yes the fuel you use can be a big contributor into how it starts and overall run conditions. Hence I will stay with the outside unit just in case. Would be nice if webasto made a suitcase type unit but I imagine they would still want a pretty penny. They are the Hondas of the units.

    I'm really glad I watched this. Because I'm not sure now if a diesel heater is a good idea for my ProMaster. I might just stick with the 12 volt electric blanket, a negative -25° sleeping bag, and starting up the van and blasting the heat for 10 or 15 minutes while I get dressed in the morning. I am not mechanically inclined, and I would be really dependent on someone else to fix the diesel heater should it leak or anything. And then of course it would be hard to put my van in the shop because that is also my home. What to you guys think? I also live in the Pacific Northwest where it does not get below freezing for months and months like some states.

    I installed the small one in my RV. It takes less space than the original furnace. I run it on the lowest setting a d end up burning 7 gallons of diesel per month. This is better than 28 gallons of propane.
    The initial power draw from the glow plug is a bit higher than the propane furnace. The original wiring is too small to handle the increase current draw and you end up with a voltage drop that errors out the heater. So a thicker Guage wire is required. After two years I had to replace the pump. No big deal. Only cost $15. I sent the hot air into the ducting and used a circular to rectangular duct transition and some foil tape.
    Running it on high in our 32 foot trailer is way too hot! We are comfortable with it on the 1.8 to 2.2 setting depending on how cold it it outside. 32°F Is a 2.2 setting.

      The normal propane furnace does burn some power. Depending how cold you can run through most of a house battery or more. It’s like 300 watts when running. Verses 40 or so of a diesel heater at max. I pre warm the rv with diesel heater and propane furnace then shut off propane heater and just let the diesel heater run on medium or so depending. Rv with Tito did a good install.

      Start up can go as high as 170 for about 30 seconds or so. So it trips and shuts off.

    All those heaters are identical if you take them out of their boxes. You can make a component heater out of one that's in a container so just buy the cheapest one because they are all the same (5KW or 8KW) You should change the fuel line as most of them come with the cheap clear green fuel line which is soft and dan swell causing a leak and a fire hazzard.
    The "air filter" that is supposed to go onto the intake hose is actually just a muffler, NOT an air filter although it will filter out the big pieces. I suggest drilling more holes in it so it is less restrictive and using some kind of filter material inside to help with filtering the air so the glow plug hole and screen stay clean (very important during startup)

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Год назад +1

      I don’t know what kind of trailer but you could do that. The mountable unit has a long harness to be able to have the controls somewhere although if you could have the return inside it would make it more efficient. I’ll be adding one more small port for mine to go into the storage bay. It’s a little warmer in there and less chance of fumes blowing around into the intake.
      But no reason it shouldn’t work in a front box, it will just need a connector hose from box to trailer.

      A 8k for my big unit will serve better for sure so I’ll move to the large this winter.
      Also depends on the temps you camp in. But at 32ft it will work fine.
      Normally if it’s cold I’ll fire up the main furnace while I’m getting the diesel heater hooked up and going, I don’t want to mount one, but then after about 15 mins I’ll switch to the diesel heater and shut down furnace the. This will keep it nice enough to stay warm for the day and night.

    It looks like you will probably want to take the cover off and make a complete inspection of all the screws and clamps on these heaters. I found on most of the videos I've watched, the units are not all put together very well. Some people got lucky and they worked right out of the box, but most of them found fuel lines lose or pinched and screws lose. This could cause a fire or burn down whatever you are trying to heat with it, so be careful. Some claim the fuel lines are made out of cheap mateial and can swell up, leak or fail in a way that causes fuel to leak and cause a fire on the exhaust tube (which is right next to the fuel line - poor engineering) So I suggest changing the fuel lines to be safe.

    once the diesel heater starts running on its own, the glo-plug shuts off and stays off until shutdown, when it burns off any residue; hence, "dieseling".
