I was always salty how Burning died, he deserved better than that. Not to mention they never got to warn the Federation about the Zeon plot. Zeon fans probably see it as a win but with what Gato and the Delaz fleet accomplishing Operation Stardust it led to the creation of one of the worst organizations in Gundam. . .the Titans. So once again Zeon creates more problems and suffering for everyone.

Lt South Burning is essentially Obi Wan Kenobi in A New Hope or he is Qui Gon Jin in The Phantom Menace... sorry as I could only think of the Star Wars reference but in the DVD and Blu Ray commentary when George Lucas was making the first film he basically said he had this super powerful character at the end of the movie story (back when it was not known if the movie would be profitable or have approval for sequels) and he is supposed to pass the torch to the younger character... as such Burning had to die but the sour point is he gets killed by a lackluster pilot in Cima Garahau who became an ace by shooting at Sabrefish fighters plus rose in ranks doing shady missions she knew about and did anyway and the kicker being that in official Bandai/Sunrise "if" scenarios where she survives, she just becomes a Titans bootlicker...
If you slow down the scene where Burning's GM Custom gets hit, he gets hit because of her Gelgoog's wrist machine gun that sprays bullets, her Gelgoog Custom Beam rifle machine gun also sprays beam fire and so does her Gerbera Tetra... lmao, she is a weak "ace" pilot as she did not really earn those skills after having to leave Odessa where she was stationed and when she was stationed at Granada, her entire fleet was fully intact cause they did not have to do any fighting.
Burning essentially almost killed Cima and he was just getting inside his cockpit, while the plot tried saying he needed to take it easy due to age and injury from the Xamel fight where he chose to deliver his Burning Punch attack, the problem is he still sliced her beam rifle with one swipe and a lucky spray shot was not a skill shot at that range.
Anyways Burning was too powerful as a pilot, had he stayed it would have changed the dynamic of the rest of the episodes plus part of the idea is that Monsha, Alpha Bates and Adel basically get inspired to ascend as the Titans (given that they were Earth Born Elites like Burning and Kou and Keith) Basically the Dick Allen and Karks issue that if they also survived, it would change the position of Kou because he ranked lower than Keith.

Yeah you were piloting Alpha Bate's RGM-79N GM Custom, iirc both Alpha Bates and Monsha had hyper bazookas and machine guns interchangeably but South Burning only had the machine gun which was basically a Gelgoog Marine killer or Gelgoog Marine Swiss cheese maker...
Adel and Keith piloted the Guncannon types so as I understand it it could be either Alpha Bates or Monsha not both, as well as Keith, Adel and Kou Uraki while Burning has the machine gun since this is a 5v5 match and in the episode the MS were spread apart despite the fact that they can communicate with each other and I feel that GBO2 plays this well as I do not believe having a microphone would help when having sorties with strangers.

i may be in the minority but I always liked how Burning died, it was the kind of mundane yet dramatic thing that really fit the style of 0083. One of the better executed parts of the series.

0083 was so dramatic with things.

I had a great round in this situation battle last weekend. In the GP01fb, went 12 and 1 for 169K damage.

As far as Anavel Gato's MS-09RS Rick Dom Custom, the idea was that it was retired or probably handed off to a fellow pilot behind the scenes because Anavel Gato was supposed to receive a MS-14A Gelgoog Custom that due to his skills was also given additional long range beam rifle weapons and he managed a couple of sorties before the final sortie at A Baoa Qu where his beam rifle arm got blasted away. Then like Char Aznable getting what seems like a slow repair to his YMS-14S Gelgoog Custom where Amuro had sliced the arm off, there seems to be some type of background story that Gelgoog parts were not easy to get especially with A Baoa Qu taken over by the Feddies and Gato's Dolowa Carrier ship also having gone up in flames.
Originally the Dom Funf onboard Delaz's Gwazine was supposed to be some special low run or prototype Rick Dom Funf (similar to the land based tropical use model with enhanced thermonuclear engines for higher mobility performance) and had it's own MS model number that I have an old Gundam entertainment book that talks about it however since Gundam 0083 came out in 1991 Japan and since then very little was done with any space use Rick Doms of the Funf type, it was never really talked about or expanded upon even on the Sony PS2 Gundam EiS or even Gihren's Greed Ambition games of all places where they would have addressed it and cleared it up...
So basically in the remastered Gundam 0083 for Blu Ray release Sunrise/Bandai producers added some claim that instead of Delaz lending Anavel Gato his high ranking officer Rick Dom Funf because high ranking Zeon officers, not just M'Quve were actually expected and capable of having pilot training especially if they had to fight to the last man even though in the 1979 TV series lower ranking Zeon officers tell either Char or M'Quve that they do not have to fight like common soldiers which is just iirc more a reference to Japanese caste society of upper class men or a mix of this because even in some of the serious Samurai films from Japan there are instances were a high ranking Samurai had to fight and was sometimes depicted as being more dangerous than the common soldier... but it depends on the story... so basically instead of Delaz lending Anavel Gato his personal use MS, the Blu Ray added some claim that supposedly it was also Anavel Gato's personal use MS which does not make sense because although as political fanatics and followers of Gihren and Dozle, both Delaz and Gato were actually stationed in different areas... Delaz was directly under Gihren Zabi at A Baoa Qu and Anavel Gato was supposed to be also directly under Gihren Zabi at A Baoa Qu but due to being responsible for the Dolowa, he was sent to Solomon or could be assigned to Solomon for patrol and defense but the Gundam wiki relies on fewer sources than Gihren's Greed placing pilots in key bases at the start of the game which all comes from Bandai and Sunrise anyway.
Which bring us back to Anavel Gato's Gelgoog... due to the scarcity of Gelgoog parts and no Dolowa which may have had machinery to make replacement parts as it is implied by Gundam TV show when Gundam needs major repairs at White Base... it seems like they either did not repair his Gelgoog or probably did but by then in the story it's about capturing a Gundam type... unfortunately the Gundam 0083 manga completely did not even bother to address this topic either hence the long explanation.
