It is here in the historic Green Dragon pub, set in a 17th Century coaching inn, that the famous highwayman Dick Turpin was captured. A copy of the record of his capture displayed in the pub shows that he was posing as a horse dealer called John Palmer. After stealing some horses from Lincolnshire he decided to stop at the pub for refreshment, where he got into an argument and shot a local gamecock. After being apprehended by the police he was unmasked as Turpin and was later tried and hung in York.
St. Helen’s church is thought to be around 900 years old, dating from the time of William Rufus, King of England (1087-1100). Restored several times throughout its long history, a substantial restoration in a 13th-century gothic revival style took place in 1862 by George Gilbert Scott.
Passing by Mill Pond and the Wauldby Dam, this walk leads into the small but beautiful dale of Welton Dale, a dry valley formed in a periglacial phase when the chalk was frozen as surface flow of melted ice and snow cut through to create the valley we see today. Finally we walk through the Welton Wold Plantation where we find noisy tree fellers hard at work, before a quick visit to the domed stone monument known simply as the Raikes Mausoleum.
Hull banker Robert Raikes who lived at Welton Hall built the mausoleum for himself and his family in 1818. The land on which the mausoleum stands was consecrated by the Church of England in 1822 and part of this land was set aside as a burial ground for the parish of Welton. Deep below the mausoleum is a passageway that leads to a large vault. It contains 7 lead coffins, 4 adult shells and 2 baby shells. The 2 baby shells were desecrated and that of Elizabeth Raikes who died at the young age of 27. Her skull was stolen and found near the Humber Estuary.

Hey Jamie - really like your videos highlighting the terrific villages. I particularly like the theme song 'Soldier On' - it's a brilliant chord progression and melody. I've subscribed under both of my YT accounts to your video and music channels and listened to more of you songs. A lot of good stuff going on there! Cheers.
Thanks Keith. Much appreciated. Keep an eye out for some really lovely walks coming on the channel over the next week, and be sure to watch the From The Air series with original music! 😉

What a lovely peaceful place!
It really is! I will revisit in summer when all the trees have put their clothes on 😊
مكان جميل حقآ 😄🤲🏻🔷
Enjoyed that! Bravo! 😊
I'm happy that you did 😊
I wish I was born in England.
Tell me, which country do you live in?
Fantastiskt vackert, prenumererar gärna på din kanal och ser fram emot att se mer av dina fina videos 🎉💯🙏
So happy you have joined us. As you can see this is a new channel, but I have some beautiful walks planned for this year 🥾🌎
This is a regular walk for us. Alot of the fences were put up due to Lockdown walkers trampling the undergrowth, and disturbing wildlife. Is it possible for you to edit your film so people don't scramble through to the Mausoleum?
I'd also recommend a coffee at the end back in Welton, at The Lucky Duck opposite the pond 😊
