The tavern scene where Gertz met his grandfather was my favourite part of the stream. I maybe could have guessed that you were "making it all up" (but I mean that's D&D) but in my opinion, improv is good, and that was well done improv. It felt natural to me, and it was great development for Gertz's character.

You mentioned again that every DnD campaign takes place after the fall of a more powerful civilization, but I quite like the idea of it being during the rise of the most powerful empire. Where new magics are being discovered, magic users are reaching heights never before dreamed, and the PCs are smack dab in the middle of it. Are they mages striving to be the strongest in the world? Are they mortals resisting this dangerous new territory? I think it could create a world that most players wouldn't have even considered, and could possibly make for their most memorable campaign setting they've ever played.

It works better for certain editions. 3rd Edition I always kind of baseline presumed that. Because the rules of 3rd edition presumed it. I mean not explicitly... but things included as rules and guidelines. Like the idea that there is magic commonly available in every single settlement. That you can at a relatively small town just find a shop where they're setting dozens of potions of healing and spell scrolls, partially drained magical wands, maybe even +1 magic weapons and armor.
To me, a setting like that isn't the post apocalypse. Having to go to lost, dangerous places to hope to find these things while risking your life is. Going down to the local apothecary and literally handing over a sack of coins for an instant curative potion is not.
But that's also kind of me. I play different editions of D&D based on the stories I want to tell. The subtle, or major, changes between editions kind of shifting the focus here and there. Like if I want a real gritty, sort of low magic world where even just running into a Magic User in general is an unusual event, much less people actually having something like a +2 Orcsbane Longsword... I go back to Basic Edition. If I want something where the heroes from the very get go feel like skilled (if not powerful, but at least competent at what they're supposed to do) heroes who can pull off amazing feats with luck and determination? I play 4th edition.
And if I want that rising empire, pre-fall? 3rd is the wheelhouse edition. I think it's funny that sort of the marquee setting WotC had for 3rd edition, their new big addition to D&D, was exactly that. Eberron. Where while they tried to play lip service to the post apocalyptic idea of the Dragons and the Giant Empire and such... it's a world in ascendancy. With new wonders like the Lightning Rails and Warforged. New discoveries. The power brokers not being Kings and Lords but freemen, guilds really.

I rationalize the writing down of story information (as Gurtz did and the CR players do) as my character having a naturally better memory than I do. Just because I have a crap memory for names doesn't mean my character has to! ;)

There's also the fact that your characters are living the campaign, and only the campaign, moment to moment instead of week to week.
You might not remember that Lord's name you heard last Thursday after a week of work and IRL drama, but your character may remember that Lord's name she heard last night at that feast that was the biggest thing she was doing that week.

On the surface of it, watching these Q&As for an hour and watching recaps of your D&D sessions should not be all that interesting. Somehow though, I end up completely entranced in what you are talking about. I've just been given a very important question for Matt.....Everyone stop what you're doing and listen!
Mr. Colville: When you first started your group in Bedegar, [sic?] what scenario did you begin with? What town did you start them in? What hook did you use? A different one for each character? How long did they play before your first video of them in the cave going after the Orcs, adapted from the "Night Below" campaign?
    Thanks for being you.

I just discover you channel last week, and Matt, I gotta say you are AMAZING man (maybe Matthew is the name of great people, you, mercer, me since my is a brazilian version of our name LOL XD, anyway). I am watching all your videos, I started just because of the the Running the Game tips, but you are such an incredeble person that I decided watche every video you've posted. I didn't comment before, because these are old videos so I think you mayy not even read it, but if you do, I want to say thank you, because your videos are great and I believe they are going to improve me a lot as a DM.
And also, I am commeting in here to also say I loved the As Above So Below session. Edric is already one of my favorite NP Characters, if not my favorite, from all RPG Streams I've watched so far (he is such a nice guy, I'm probably ripping him off to use in my current fantasy world game =D). And even if didn't think, or like it, the last part of the session when we discover Gertz's grandfather was alive, for me, that was astonishing, really a touching and dramatic moment, specially when he hug Gertz and call him son. For a moment I though you already knew that, but didn't wrote on the notes to be a surprise for us to, after like, 10 minutes I started think "wait... what if he didn't knew it and just improvised all of that", I was so involved in that story, I didn't realize you were improving until minutes later lol.
Anyway, long comment, doesn't help you to take a momentt to read since you have a life lol, but if you do red, thank you again, for all the tips, the great ideas, the all the entertainment you gave me with that first recorded session!

Loved As above so Below, watched it Sunday. Loved this video, some good stuff in there. 2 things I do as A DM that you might find helpful, useful etc.
    1) The Magician's Force - In the second book of Robert Lynn Asprin's Myth Adventure series, Aahz explains to Skeeve the concept of the Magician's Force. It is a way to give someone a choice, without really giving them one. Lets say you have 2 cards on the table and you want to reveal the card on the left. You tell the other participant or viewer to point to one. You don't tell them what you are doing with it, just tell them to point to one. If they point to the one on the right You say "Okay, we'll get rid of this one!" making them feel that they made that card go away. If they pick the left card You say "Okay, we'll keep this one and get rid of the other one" Then you flip over the left card and they feel like they were the reason that the correct card was turned over. This concept has tons of application in Dungeons and Dragons. Your scenario with going left or right in the corridor is just such case. maybe you set up a dungeon that has an underground crypt for a session, and you give the players a mission to go examine a graveyard, but they still have this other desire to check out this old creepy dude's house. They will never know that the crypt they ended up in would have been in either place. Just make sure that you prep something different for the road not taken for the next session.
2)Notes - I love when my players take notes. At the end of every session, I ask my players if I may read the notes they took. If they say no, no big deal, I drop it right there. If they do let me read them it gives me some excellent feedback. One - I look for things that they wrote down that they thought were interesting or important that aren't in my own notes. Maybe I said something when I was improvising that they liked, thought was important, or thought was interesting. I will write down a list of these things in my notes with a huge question mark next to them, so that I can think about them and maybe revisit them for the players. Two - I look to see if they wrote down the things that I wanted them to get from the session. If they got the important stuff I laid out great. If they didn't write down something that I really wanted/needed them to get, I will put a star by it in my notes, and usually something like "you failed to get this information across to them dumbass!" If they missed an important plot point or character or detail, it is my fault for not making it clear, not theirs.
I hope these things help you or someone else. Love what you are doing, keeping doing what you do.

WastelandRadio yeah it's called "presenting a hard choice" in Dungeon World and is one of the GM's options. I kind of love the mixing of gaming vernacular into tabletop roleplay without pausing the scene to "hash it out." Just say "you can chase the villain and she'll know you're coming but you won't lose her OR you can follow her and possibly ambush her later but also possibly lose her trail. She's getting farther away every second. What do you do?" I'm not trying to produce a stage drama, we're playing a game.

Matt consider doing a regimented "Questions, Comments, Concerns." at the end of your sessions. As a decompression/debriefing of players this makes it easy to determine how well a session went; particularly sticky and slow points. Since I started using it in my games it has given me many ideas on what to plan for future sessions, what NPC's are important in the PC's eyes, and they allow me to set my players minds on a topic for consideration if they ask about it. Of course i stole the idea from watching a youtube series called Threshold run by the D6mafia.

Hey Matt, what can I do to see you reading your books on audible some day? Because I think I speak for many of us when I say that would be AWESOME! Also, Have you considered running a kick-starter for your books? It would allow you to batch sales of the physical copies (possibly reducing costs on your end) and generating those numbers might help you get a deal with a major publisher (if that is something you might still be interested in). I imagine other people have already suggested this sort of stuff, but I thought I'd mention it either way. Anywho, I love what you are doing, Please keep up the good work. Peace! Out!!!

    • @Ranxior55
      @Ranxior55 8 лет назад

I think he mentioned in a previous stream that the costs for how he'd want his hard boiled styled novel to be made into an audiobook would be too expensive. It requires renting studio time, paying actors for multiple hours in the studio. Paying someone to work the studio. then paying someone for the 40+ hours spent mixing and then paying for mastering. it ends up become an easily 50,000-60,000 cost if not more. He just doesn't feel it is feasible at this time or financially viable

    • @keithparker5625
      @keithparker5625 8 лет назад

Maybe so. I still think the kick-started angle might work.

    • @Ranxior55

+Keith Parker At 16 thousand subs he would need everyone to done roughly 3-4 dollars. If half of his subscribe base all donated an average of ten dollars he would be able to afford it most likely but that's also being generous saying that half of his sub base would donate and sadly average subs don't always have ten dollars to give. Then Kickstarter takes a hefty cut. It would be cool but he seems to have something against it because like I said last stream he just didn't seem to answer fully, besides financial barring, on why he doesn't want it

    Hi!
Thank you for doing these videos. I have been roleplaying and gamemastering for years, but even though I've never even tried D&D, your videos are really helpful and inspiring. It's nice to find people with the same interests and a similiar gamemastering style that I can kind of seek advice from with my own campaigns. I feel like I have improved a lot, thanks to you. Sociology of D&D is one of my favourites, and I hope to write some academical texts about that sort of things in the future.
I also have a question. Lately, my boyfriend and I have started running games for my little sister and brother, and those games kind of dragged me from the scifi-worlds I love back to middle-ageish-fantasy. And now I find myself in the situation of wanting to try D&D, even though I've always kind of been avoiding it.
So. What books should I get to start a campaign? I will probably get the 5th edition, but there are just so many books: players guide, DMs guide, starter kits, monster manuals and a lot more. I am lost, this is waaaay too much to choose from :'D

Vorakis (or however you spell it) is 6' 2", if he had 10 feet of rope then he could climb all the way down the rope and there would be a four foot gap between his feet and the ground, that's what the damage should be based on when you did the fall. I know this all happened three years ago and it doesn't matter too much either way but for anyone reading this, take character height into account.

How to convince my friend that a "Sexuality roll" is a horrible idea.
Backstory maybe two years ago my friend wanted to GM and one of the things he wanted to implement was you rolled on a chart to determine your character's sexuality.
At the time I do remember talking him out of this. Though he has finally found a group to game with. Through previous conversations he tends to want to recycle ideas which are bad or just slightly annoying to players.
I want to get a decent argument why he shouldn't do this. Being a long while ago I forgot the argument I had used previously other then the fact it would be annoying to be forced to roleplay something about the character that I had no real control over.
I often don't think about my characters sexuality and just let it appear in a natural way or making it convenient. This goes for NPC as well mainly because my worlds don't give a copper piece if your homosexual or not.

The Gol stones are just markers. The actual 'roads' are Elven Wayroads that the elves use. The Gol just figured out how to use them and used the stones to mark the 'entrances and exits' as well as write instructions on them for when they can be used.

DM:ed my first session last Sunday after only being a player for probably two years. I feel like it went really well. Thanks for all the advice!

It makes sence for me to not be maneckle not only for story porpuse but labor , you can't digg that much XD but still i can image a duergar giving the key to the slave so that he can free himself only to help the duergar himself.
I hope some one understands that.

With 2+ players you could just have one moderate twitch. With one that divides attention too much, but with a few you could do that.

Are your books going to come to kobo or an ePub so I can put it on my kobo. I do not want to to buy a kindle just so I can read them. I really like the way you DM it is really cool and laid back.

I would prefer if you uploaded any future streams in 30-40 min youtube videos. Maybe upload one a day if it's 5 hours long.

The least fun games of my life are with "gotcha" GMs. They are the reason so many players feel RPGs have to be an adversarial experience.

I enjoyed this video, but I'm sad that you seem to have abandoned the old "Running the Game" format. I have a limited amount of time that I can work with my daughter on her DMing, and we were watching your videos and talking about them. With this new format, we can't do that because 1) we don't have time to watch your game together AND watch a Q&A video, and 2) these videos are less subject-oriented, so they're less useful to her as a beginning DM. We were watching your "teaching" videos and your "recap" videos, and she was asking a lot of good questions and learning... this one couldn't hold her attention because it wasn't as focused. I hope you will consider at least keeping your "Running the Game" videos in their old format.

Look this is my honest take on Gertz, he is a follower. I honestly think he would be most happy playing a squire to a powerful knight, literally subordinate to another player. *shrugs*

Teagan, the watchman you meet in Book One, is a "mare."
      Heden frowned. “He’s a what?”
Domnal sat back in his chair, his grin turning into a smile.
      “Fancies men,” Domnal said.
Heden’s face went blank for a moment as he absorbed this. “Hm.” He shrugged to himself. “Well he’s that good in a fight, he can do what he wants with his prick."
That is literally the only reaction it gets. Heden is notoriously clueless about stuff.
In book two you see Teagan and his partner being domestic. Then, book three...FIGHTER.
