- YanksAtShea is proud to present another of eleven videos highlighting the last ten home runs of Roger Maris's magic 61 home runs hit during the 1961 season breaking Babe Ruth's single season home run record. Number 57 off of Frank Lary was called by Phil Rizzuto on this September afternoon in 1961 at Detroit's Briggs Stadium. Long live the REAL all-time single season home run king Roger Maris.

Run around the bases, head down, no frills, no launch angle or exit velocity. How refreshing!
For the sake of accuracy, Briggs Stadium became Tiger Stadium in 1961. The team sold over from the Briggs family to a consortium that included John Fetzer, then he became sole owner. All he needed to do was have a "T" and an "E" made, to shuffle the letters that remained from Briggs and complete the re-naming. This is a great video.
My dad was at this game. Loves telling the story. Amazing to have seen this happen live.
I was there to He hit two that day unless my memory is failing me and it was at yankee staduim
Tigers won 101 games that year and still finished some 8 1/2 games behind...The Yankees were a POWERHOUSE-I think 8 players on their roster had 20 or more Home Runs. Many Baby Boomers in Detroit remember that 1961 with fondness as the Tigers took those Yankees into September with a chance, but the Tigers lost a 4 game series in NY, got swept, and then lost 4 more and the pennant race was over.
Let’s see - Maris, Mantle, Skowron, Howard, Berra and Blanchard each had 20+ big knocks in 1961.
This blast came after Maris went without a home run for 9 days. Had to be the stress, pressure, and clumps of hair falling out. That long blast was of some help.
Off the roof? Tape measure shot!
Recognized Norm Cash at 1st Base.
no Holy Cow! on 57 or 58. disappointed🙂
The Scooter ramped up his rhetoric a lot in his later years in the booth. This was early in his broadcast career when he kept it lower-key and more professional.
