    What’s the movie Matilda about?
Young genius Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson from Mrs. Doubtfire) is regularly neglected and mistreated by her parents and her older brother. At school, she discovers the harsh punishments that Miss Trunchbull (Pamela Ferris), the tyrannical principal, inflicts on students, while her teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Jean Davidtz), becomes attached to Matilda because of her intelligence. Honey demands that Matilda be promoted to a higher class, but Trunchbull refuses. Miss Honey tells the Wormwoods about their daughter's genius but they ignore her while Matilda discovers that her father, Harry (Danny De Vito from Batman Returns), is under FBI surveillance. Her parents refuse to believe her. Matilda exercises her telekinetic power by making objects fly in the house and thwarting FBI agents who threaten to put her in an orphanage. She goes to Trunchbull's house to try to scare her with her power, but the director discovers her presence. The next day, Matilda reveals her powers to Honey, but Trunchbull goes to the classroom to get Matilda to confess. Trunchbull ends up leaving school for good. The FBI having discovered enough evidence to bring Harry down, the Wormwoods must flee to Guam. They want to get Matilda back from Honey's house but she refuses to follow them and asks to be adopted by Honey. They eventually agree and Matilda lives happily with Honey, who then becomes the new director of Crunchem Hall.

In general Ms Trunchbull murdered her step brother for his money and house and made it appear like a suicide. In the book it's all but confirmed that she did kill him. And she was really horrible to Miss Honey, basically being a way worse version of Cinderella's stepmother. And when Matilda asked Miss Honey if her aunt beat her she said "let's not get into details". On top of that, Trunchbull forced Miss Honey to sign a contract that she would pay her back all the expenses it took to raise her, taking it from her salary and only allowing her to live on one pound a week "pocket money", which is basically almost four American dollars today. In the musical adaption (original stage version, not Netflix) they go into this part of the story too

You know that isn't a logical reduction. It's often said of actors and actresses that there has to be something in the character that they already have in their own character or that they can at least identify with.
So many of them say this.
However, it's also totally true that there's no such thing as 'inherent goodness' or 'natural goodness', that humans are naturally predisposed to evil. The only reason why we're not all murderous monsters is because we have a uniquely human ability - the aspiration to something greater.
Animals don't have it. Only humans do. You have to grapple with the fact YOU could do the most horrific things, and that you will, to teeter close to the line to see that you're indeed capable of being a monster, but then to step back and to control it. That is what 'goodness' really is. It's a recognition of this and being able to control it.
      The aspiration to something greater.
Anyone who denies this or uses the term 'wouldn't hurt a fly' is naive and just plain in denial about themselves or others.
Oh yes you COULD be like Trunchbull and in fact it's most likely you WOULD be given the right circumstances and evironment and warping of your character.
'Goodness' is a measure of a person's ability to control their own damned well dark desires and monsters.
Innocence is something completely different, and it's not the case that those who are innocent are necessarily in fact good. Like, want a bet?

@@organisationxiv2927 , wow.. a lot to say and not much to do with the actual matter at hand. Where did I say in any manner that humans are "inherently good"? In what I said did you feel stimulated to give this diatribe. Now, civilized people can act the way Trunchbill did, for certain, but this was never at all about "the goodness of humanity by default" in any way.

It still amazes me that a movie made in 1996 was able to do all of these crazy things.
Like that chalk writing scene in 0:39, That was all practical.
Apparently there was a strong magnet inside of the chalk and there was a guy behind the blackboard writing backwards with another magnet.
So yeah, that chalk was not CGI, that was completely practical, the chalk was literally moving on its own because a guy was writing backwards behind the blackboard.

The blackboard erasers were on sticks and there were two special effects men attacking Trunchbull with them. Pam Ferris had to go to the hospital to get the chalk dust washed out of her eyes after they did that scene.

    - I broke your arm once before
    - I can do it again, Jenny.
    - I'm not seven years old anymore, Aunt Trunchbull.
    - *children gasp*
    - Shut your holes!
    My favorite.
