Another great vlog Duncan and what a nightmare with that pump and I can’t believe nobody asked if you were okay as they rode on past! Hey really looking forward to seeing you on Sunday! 🙌🚴
Thanks Mark. I have done some remedial work to that pump and hopefully it will work for now until I find a better solution. (Got something on the way which fingers crossed will be interesting). Can’t wait till Sunday. 😃👍
Little did I know that even when I stopped to take in that view, I had already punctured. There may be life in that pump yet. I'm going to have a look at it now. I have ordered a replacement means of pumping up tyres.....
I went through a period of using CO2 cartridges. Carried them for years. Then once when I needed them I had a flat canister so I was stuck. Bet that’s at least 15 years ago. Since then they have always carried a hand pump. Old school normally works. Clearly not always. I have ordered something which could be my future go to.
Interesting to see what pump alternative will you buy, because I’m also looking for one and a one with a flexible end. It’s sad that no one has stopped to ask, especially that you were in the middle of nowhere. Luckily you’ve made the pump work.
I need to have a look at the metal Cero pump which fell apart. A couple of modifications and it should be OK I think. Worst case scenario, I could have walked down the road for a kilometre or so and I would have been at a pub, and I could have sorted something from there I'm sure. A taxi or something.
At least it wasn’t cold and raining whilst doing your puncture. I know not everyone likes them but I carry C02, but I also do carry a pump. I always stop and ask if anyone is ok, Barrie usually rides past 😂
Thanks Heidi. Yes. I thought that, at least it wasn’t cold. 🥶 I used to carry CO2 until I was let down by some empty canisters. I have one of these new rechargeable little electric pumps on the way from China. It’s not here though. Royal Mail seem to have lost it. It took 41 hours to get to the UK customs and could be tracked at every move until Royal Mail got it. 10 days now it’s been with them.
Every so often we get one of these 'epic mechanical days' - that's probably why my seatpacks have grown ever-larger over the years - but there'll always be some new breakdown situation we can't cover. I once snapped a crank in mid-sprint and had to walk & freewheel home for 20+ miles ... with blood trickling down my shins. I always found bank-holiday traffic up there was hectic, even around Uldale and Caldbeck. A few days and you'll be back to the peace and quiet.
That is one I haven't done, never snapped a crank! I had my handlebars snap one day, luckily I was at work (just leaving) and I worked next door to a bike shop. That was at lunchtime, fixed by tea time. I was very lucky, think all I did was bang my chest on the stem. I'd only just set off.
@@clippingin1593 not half. (no pun intended). The left side of the handlebar literally came away in my hand. I do have a picture somewhere, pity I can't comment on here with it.
I have had frame fitting pumps pop apart in the past, and usually screw back together. I had one where the plastic screw thread snapped off. That. was years ago, but luckily my friend was with me so we had another. Once the removable valve core came out, I did tighten it up. I do carry the lttle tool for it.
It certainly was a nice day, got the grass cut in the afternoon myself before the rain again. Today's group ride in Yorkshire has been cancelled due to thunderstorms forecast.
Thanks James, and yes it certainly was! Almost had me swearing... not quite 😂 I have had sidewall cuts before and to be honest that's what I thought had happened. I must have rode over the rock in such a way that it did a 90 degree pot hole thing as I have two holes at 90 to a normal snake bite puncture. Afterwards I thought, I bet that would have sealed with tubeless and I would have been OK....... Still not going tubeless though, can't be bothered.
@@Joiedevivredesilives I do carry something to fix tyre gashes in the side wall. Had it in the kit for years and years. Can't remember where I got it from now. Most likely was given it by my mate who had his own bike shop. (now retired)
surprised not one asked if ok, but you ae right in that society is generally becoming 'look out for yourself only' - cars, road sharing with pedestrians stepping out in front of cyclists and yes litter.
Sucks doesn't it. 🤣 I had been using glasses for quite a few months normally before it literally came to me in the middle of one night that I had better take a pair out on the bike!
Yeah, I know. It's been a while, but I do seem to have times when I get almost stranded for one reason or another. Tone that is still engrained in my memory was about 1992 on the top of Cowpe Lowe near Scout Moor (that's at 440m above sea level or 1440ft) all alone when my chain snapped while out mountain biking, In those days I didn't carry a chain tool. Ended up fixing it by bashing the plates back together with two rocks.......Stuff happens and then I seem to add something else to my tool kit.
Disappointing no one stopped to help you there. All you needed was to borrow another pump Punctured last weekend and multiple people stopped including one guy who gave me a tube as the valve was too short on the one I had
Thanks for the comment Jon. Yes, only needed to borrow someone else's pump and I would have been sorted. I have stopped several times in the past myself to help others. I remember one guy stuck mid time trial. Got him back on his way.
The weather & Road repair peoples must have some sort of deceitful way 😂 , We seem now to be one man band's Praise God we can rely on his work , Amen 🙏
Round here the weather God's are breaking the roads faster than the repair people fix them ( which they are at the moment with proper teams on some roads, main ones admitedly).
despite a frustrating day in the sadle and heat, you looking better and fitness back
Yes, think I am starting to get there,

That view at 1.54 is georgous Dunc. Time for that pump to go to the scrapheap I think 😉

That was one awful pump. Best investment I made was a couple of co2 cartridges. Havent had a flat since.

been there same screw pump issue... tighten the removable valve espcially on new inner tubes. 👍
