Dave, good video. Now a word about shop safety. 1)wear safety glasses reloading. 2) see #1 3) see #1. You did a lot of banging the hull while looking at it from overhead. Don't have to guess what would happen if a TSS pellet found its way under the primer on the table. Also an old tip from a 60 year old Lyman reloading handbook. Start with all hull mouths down in the loading block and turn it upright after putting in the powder. This will help prevent failure to load and double charging should you get distracted. Keep up the good work.
This cat just explained more about the shell length problem with certain inertia driven shotguns than all the bright minds at federal ammunition company. They oughta write you a check sir, cause I argued with them over this problem for a month and never got a straight answer. You not only presented the problem but gave the solution. Bravo, well done sir.
My Wife “Babe, What the hell are You doing with My Hitachi wand?” Me, (strung out in caffeine, nicotine, & suffering from a chronic case of turkey brain) “Nuthin’.. Just vibrating My turkey loads like Dave Owens..” 😂😂🤦♂️
Dave, Thanks for the video. I’m all about adding another component to be more involved in the process. Started making diaphragms a few years ago and hope to add this into the mix soon. Good luck this season from a fellow N. Ga hunter.
Have you tried BPI 16/20 thin Mylar? Trimmed height wise you only need one piece. I use the same recipe from Hal that you do except mine has the 16/20 and you only need one piece to cover what you are doing with two.
They Mylars drove me nuts trying to keep them down in the wad. I ended up switching to TPS wads and stoped using Mylar. The Mylar is really only there to protect the barrel, the TPS wads are thicker. I have examined many after test shots and pellets do not press thru the wad at all. Unlike a CSD wad with out Mylar which you will find where pellets have pressed thru the wad.
So essentially there is little to no professional loading equipment needed to hand roll these beauties! That’s awesome. I did not know this. Now that I do though, I’ll be rolling my own from here on out. Love the TSS but those babies are high and getting higher, sometimes hard to find too. Thanks Dave!
Loved this. Ive been wondering how you make your shells for 2 seasons now. Glad we're starting to get some of this behind the scenes content like last weeks with the trumpet!
Great video. Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to share. Can you make another DIY short video demonstrating your techniques on making your own diaphragm calls?
I’ve been waiting on this for a while. Call making video in the works? Thanks Dave, youth season opens for us this weekend! Trying to get my son his first long beard. He’s a big fan!!
I use the bags my potato chips come in they are mylar, and I use the Styrofoam that my sausage sits on that I get at the supermarket And I stamp little circles out of that.
Great video! I've been reloading my own rifle rounds for deer and have been wanting to start making my turkey loads also. This answered a lot of questions I had. Thanks Dave!!!
4 years ago I was loading my very first tss and did not have my personal process down. I knocked over a shell with tss in it but not sealed yet. Tss went everywhere on hardwood floor. as I'm attempting to pick up all the hundreds of shot my wife comes over to help and immediately knocks over another shell. To this day I still find a tss shot or 2 when sweeping!!!
Hey Dave, thanks for the video. One question. What is the approximate height of the hull material from the top of the overshot card to the top of the hull before you roll crimp? Hard to tell from the video. Wanting to make sure I've got the right amount of hull to make a good roll crimp.
Ur awesome bud. Keep doing what ur doing. I love to spring gobbler hunt and when I'm waiting for spring to roll back around i love watching u and chubs squirrel and slizzy hunting all different states. U guys be safe and keep bringing the great videos. Thanks
Hell i was loading these back before they were popular.now all of a sudden federal put a fancy logo on a box & hyped up tungsten & now its the bomb!! 😂 marketing schemes still whackin guys by the milions.its sad.come on guys.use ur heads.u can stuff anything from salt to tacks in a shotshell.just use common sense.its a shotgun!!!!!!!
Might be a touch more expensive than just buying them off the shelf honestly. But for me it’s another aspect to live the hunt through is the way I look at it!
Great video! One thing I do is load the wad with the cork/felt and mylar (minus the shot and buffer of course) before you put it into the hull. Something else you can do while watching Sex in the City with the ole lady. LOL
I,m 63 years old been reloading for a long time this is the worst veido on reloading ive ever seen your fear of talking about what your reloading from size of shell to grain weight when you could tell veiwers this is your receipe and not intended for others to reschearch there on loads through reloader hand books to protect you aganist liability. and produce a good veido.
Then why don't you share you "long time" of knowledge on reloading with a video of your own? This video was not intended to share a recipe. It was to show the basics of how I reload shells because is was a question I fielded constantly. I think it accomplished that.
Nothing personal ! If you can tell people your specific loading ,then you should make the video . Your topic is handling loading TSS telling people how to load 🤔
Where's your SAFETY GLASSES??? That makes me nervous when you sight the crimp at bottoming out phase and getting eye level with the spinning drill press!!!
That’s a tree saddle in the background? If so I def love mine and you are a legend. You should offer some one on one time with people who are willing to pay a certain amount to help with calling or hunting. Great for consumer and and yourself.
Thanks for the video. This will be my first time reloading turkey shells. I have five 12ga 3.5 inch Federal #9s. Can I use that powder for my 20 gauge 3 inch turkey loads? Is it the same powder? I have RBCS 1500 scale to measure powder and shot. Thanks.
I didn't read all of the comments, but did anyone mention or ask, "why not just use a longer piece of mylar instead of using two pieces cupped inside one another"? Is there a reason that it has to be two different pieces? Or if you can find longer pieces, can you cut them to fit to go all the way around?
Awesome video. Are those for Waterfowl or Turkey? How long would you say it takes to load a box of 25 and what’s the cost for a Box of 25 when you Roll your own.
thanks for a good video brother. can you confirm what length the pvc pipe is, thats a cool trick and my hand loads kinda stick in my m2. this might fix that.
Get the 16/20 mylar and you don’t have to trim. Fits perfect. I was not getting good patterns and with the mylar and Hal told me to try it without. My pattern went from 250 in the 10” to 350 without. The mylar is supposed to protect the barrel but Hal said you would probably be okay with 9’s.
Good Video! I have the same load data from Hal. I like how you use the ratchet and the 1/2" bolt. I'm going to give those two a go the next time I roll a few shells. For the particular load you are using in your video tutorial, I prefer to take the wads, add the cork, and the mylar before I insert them into the hulls. I'll get the powder in the hulls first, then I prepare the wads with the cork and mylar. Then insert the prepared wads into the hulls. It seems a bit easier, especially inserting the mylar this way. Take Care
Something soothing about handloading. Grew up loading trap shells with/for my Dad back in the late 70's before it became too expensive in his opinion. Been thinking about this recently as I've decided to try Turkey hunting with a shotgun instead of the bow this year, and 2 3/4" 12 gauge (going to use Dad's Winchester 1200 trap gun) have been few and far between here lately.
Very helpful video, glad to see another real Turkey hunter helping other fellow hunters. If you ever are in west central Mississippi, I would like to show you some very good hunting ground 👍and good luck this season.
Love the video! I too load TSS and get my shot from Hal. One thing I saw that I do that may help you is I use a 16-20ga Mylar wrap. I roll it the short way. I can use 1 piece without trimming in my shells. Hope to see more of your vids! Keep’m coming!
Just curious why are most TSS shells rolled and not fold crimped? Any specific reason? It seems like you would have room for a crimp without the insert wads. I’ve been loading bismuth shells with buffer and as long as my crimp is good I don’t see any buffer falling out. If I get a bad one just like you did use a little nail polish and I’m good to go. Just wondering if there is any rhyme or reason to this.
TSS is so dense that in order to get a proper pellet count you need to up your charge to a 1.5 oz shot charge in 20ga vs a standard 1oz lead load. That extra half ounce of shot plus any buffer you add is enough that there isn’t really enough room to get a proper fold crimp, so a shot card and a roll crimp becomes necessary.
I found this very interesting and have wanted to do this for many years. That desire intensified after that video with Sleazy and that wild hunt that ended up with him taking a bird with the shell with his Dads ashes. Thank you for sharing this information. I can see you and Chubbs at it now. As if this video wasn’t enough, would it be feasible to do one on your vest? I noticed some modifications in the straps that look like Claw slings. Your attention to detail in your approach is great! Makes me feel a little less unusual.
In case you encounter moisture while out hunting! 🤣 Dave do you trim your hulls any before loading. Some of my loads have more space above the overshot card than others and I still don’t know if it’s best to cut them to a specific length or roll them all the same.
The Mylar is a PIA I ended up switching to TPS wads and stopped using Mylar. I also had cycling issues in a Benelli even after shortening the shell as you did. I found the issue for me was the area at the end of the Mag. The corners are rounded unlike a lot of guns that are more squared. If you get a gaep roll crimper it will leave the roll crimp outer edge more curved inward allowing it to cycle. Nice video!
I am started to load my own TSS for a 20 gauge Franchi. Could I ask what the beginning and end length (after roll crimping) your 20 gauge shells are that cycle out of your Benelli? Thank you! If my lengths are the same as yours and I still have problems I will buy one of the Gaep roll crispers.
Hello, Ive always used 4s maybe 5s for turkey, I didnt think 9s would penitrate. I would be worried about crippling a turkey with those. I like the idea of useing a 20 gauge. I believe theres a company called MEC that make a press that does alot of these processes. Good luck its good to see young people intrested in the outdoors.
Awesome video. I was wondering, have you ever ran into an issue where the end that you crimped looks discolored when you're done crimping? Would the WD40 like you showed in the video prevent this? Cant tell if its heating too much or what. Thanks!
Most often it's the friction built up from lack of lubrication and the press spinning too high rpms- it's most important for the rpms to be slow. I think mine are at 300.
@@pinhotiproject I actually ended up buying a hand crank roll crimper and it is so much easier in my opinion. Makes super nice crimps and no drill press required. I never got good with the press lol.

Up here in Michigan we use shells or casings not shales.. Where do you get the shot .. It's very expensive in store bought loads..
website in linked in the video I believe.

Dave, Thanks for the video. I’m all about adding another component to be more involved in the process. Started making diaphragms a few years ago and hope to add this into the mix soon. Good luck this season from a fellow N. Ga hunter.
Might have to build your own. Even turkey loads are sold out in alot of places.
Have you tried BPI 16/20 thin Mylar? Trimmed height wise you only need one piece. I use the same recipe from Hal that you do except mine has the 16/20 and you only need one piece to cover what you are doing with two.

What is the advantage/necessity of the roll crimp
Awesome video I’ve referenced this video a lot I just have one question. Do u really need to trim the hull? Won’t the roll crimp shorten it anyhow?
Yes but makes an overall longer shell that I’ve had hang up in some shotguns.
Thanks for reply I’m new to reloading I was jw

I told my son a while ago when I die cremate when you do the same thing but with her deer cartridges
Since you already have the nail polish out for the overshot card, you might as well do a small streak over the primer to waterproof that also.
Great video. Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to share. Can you make another DIY short video demonstrating your techniques on making your own diaphragm calls?

Do you have to roll crimp tss, Or can you crimp it like a normal load?
There are folk that fold crimp too.

Does Hal Abbott provide the instructions on reloading tss with the shot that you purchased or do you have to request a formula personally?
Do you use the Big 20 XLC recipe? Just wondering how much to trim off my hulls!

Not sure it's possible with the roll crimps.
For waterfowl loads does a person have to use the Mylar say in 410 2.5” hulls?
What's the actual length?

Not a good idea to lift the primed case off the bench when ramming
That's now over $6 a shell just for the TSS shot. Not including the shell, primer, wads, cup, buffer, powder, or mylar!
Unreal.

TSS is WAY more dense than lead shot, so #9 TSS is going to penetrate the same or better than #5 lead.
