"exploit" is the right word for it, as cheating or glitching would be intentionally messing with the game to make it do something, and exploiting is taking advantage of a game mechanic.
I guess it isn't working for all loot boxes, cause today i was riding somewhere northwest of Strawberry and i found loot box with 3 gold nuggets inside. I was like omg i'm gonna make tons of money then i picked them up and rode back to Strawberry which was a decent time away, but when i came back to loot box, gold nuggets didn't respawn so i was kinda sad hehe

Yeah, you can grab it and walk a certain distance away and come back.
