Terry Kath and Chicago In Tokyo, Japan 1972

- The band performs at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo during their June, 1972 Japan/Australia Tour. This is a restored version of the video, with a clearer view of Terry's incredible fretwork during, "A Song For Richard and His Friends" and the only video we have of the trippy, "Fancy Colours". With Terry on his Les Paul Professional and Stratocaster, we see the force and power of Chicago with Terry Kath.
Ain’t no way it gets old by I’m almost 71 m been listening to the old group since 1970
same!
Same! I'm 67 y old, from Yokohama Japan. Old but good days.
Con terry desaparecio el verdadero mundo
1970? You started late!
Chicago was never the same after the untimely death of TK and Peter Cetera leaving for a solo career.
They were the rock & roll of the band.
IMO ...
Up until 3 months ago, I had no idea of who Terry Kath was.... I never hear his name. Having learned his name and after watching a ton of Chicago videos, I believe he may the best guitarist of all time.
Jimi Hendrix said Terry was a better guitar player than he was
You betcha!
Glad to Have You as Another FAN of Terry! The G.O.A.T.!
Yes agree. Its a crime he is rarely mentioned amongst greatest if all time! Maybe be because he died fairly young. 😢
@@kimmcinerney5418 I had just written a long comment to you, but it disappeared. Anyway many are to soon gone. Spread the word spread this Music, and keep it ALIVE !!
In 1968, I attended the Jimi Hendrix concert at the Indiana Fairgrounds Coliseum and the back up band was The Chicago Transit Authority. We had never heard of these guys. Then they came out blasting “Introduction” as their lead song, and we were all TOTALLY blown away. Kath was bigger than life!! Plus, we had never heard of such a thing as a rock band with horns!! OMG! One of my life’s greatest experiences!!❤❤❤
Terry Kath was a BADASS on the guitar, its a shame he's not ranked amongst the 100 all-time greats, when you get a complement from someone like Jimi Hendrix, you know where you belong, Terry Kath was one of rock's greatest guitarists who never got his due during his lifetime.
Yes, indeed!!! Too bad they showed more of Peter’s butt and not enough of Terry playing!!
These "all-time greats" polls are meaningless anyway.
Because Terry Kath was a BADASS with guns too. He blew his brains out while playing russian roulette with himself... 2nd Amendment 😄LoL
He was probably in the top 100.
It is really only someone's opinion who the best is
It's not like sport.. It is all about who's playing YOU like the best.
For me there are about 20 guitarists who are my favourite and Terry is one of them
@@Andrewkafp - You actually have a point, I don't like how magazines and other similar saying or taking a poll who's the greatest, yes, I do agree its you or whomever likes to hear play, the real opinion is the person themself who likes to hear what they want to hear.
Terry left us 45 years ago today, and still casts a massive shadow over rock and roll. Those who understand music appreciate just what a genius he was. Those who don't, well, they really don't know what they're missing, do they?
Well said
AMAZING GUITARIST !!!!
Not the same band without him. Great talent!!
I agree as Jimi Hendricks once said "I'm pretty good but that kath guy blows me away!"
Alcohol and guns don't play well together.
You know what blows my mind about Terry Kath? On the song "Beginnings," This guy, Terry likely says, to himself, this song is so F-ing great, I don't need to overplay on it. That was what blew my mind about early Chicago. Kath could have been one of the most 5 famous guitarists ever on talent alone. But, he was for the band first. And dominated singing, songwriting, and guitar playing.
Raw pure and natural music. Everything is original. Layers and layers of music.
I've been a Chicago fan for 50 years. Is it just me but the music just dosen't get old.
E Older Much of the post Kath era doesn’t age as well.
Bro... don’t feel bad. I am a fan since I was a freshman college in 1970 and I’m still in love with this band. I am 66 now. This is the type of band that once you are in to it, will be part of your life for ever...
You guys are just old farts & fossils... 😉👍🏻
And... I'm proud to be one of you!
I'm 55 and when I was 7 or 8 , I discovered the Great Chicago.
That Christmas my folks got me the CTA double album and an older (non-working) Garrard turntable.
I had spent the year building a Heathkit amplifier (mono!) and had dug up an old pair of speakers that functioned but needed some loving care to restore the damaged wood cabinets.
Their goal (& mine 😎) was to repair the turntable and get down to the fun part... Listening!
It took me just a week or two.
Nowadays there is "Autotune" which makes everything and everyone --> THE SAME!
Oh well, A great trip down memory lane.
Btw: As a teen, hearing of Terry Kath's death, I became fervently anti-gun. I was living in NJ, so that was the norm anyway.
Thank God, I grew up and discovered the CONSTITUTION! I became a cop and volunteer firefighter/emt and am now an NRA firearms safety instructor. Lesson -- DRUGS & GUNS DON'T MIX!
Rip Mr. Kath. Thanks for the memories and outstanding music.
RBAD RBAD lm a old fart in England and l don’t think they are as good without Terry, the same with the Stones without Brian
Jones.
Rbad Rbad Cant appreciate your sarcasm or sincerity or service to your fellow man any more than to say so here in the public sphere. Thank you for helping to restore some of my faith in humanity. Rock on sir.
A friend in my neighborhood first introduced me to Chicago’s music back in 1970 (Live at Carnegie Hall). I was completely hooked after that. Those guys could jam with the best of them. TK was a complete animal on guitar and had an awesome singing style. Got to see them in person in 1975 (17 years old) at Chicago Stadium with The Beach Boys, 15th row! I was in heaven, knowing that for one night they were performing right in front of me! I got to see them two more times before Kath died. I cried the day I heard the news about him. But, what a legacy they’ve left us. So glad I was able to grow up during their time here on earth.
Best Chicago line up ever. Terry Kath is missed !
The deeper I dive the more I discover just how talented these 6 were.
7
Which one isn't included in your "talented 6"?
Absolutely, but there were 7... Terry Kath(g), Peter Cetera(b),Danny Seraphine(d), Robert Lamm(p, organ, etc), Lee Loughnane (trumpet, flugelhorn), Walt Parazaider(reeds n flute), James Pankow ('bone)... we dare not dismiss or forget any... they almost all wrote for/with each other, played till fingers bled to get and stay TIGHT, and to honor their heroes (in 3-5 GENRES of music across hundreds of years), and to love and serve their adopted brothers, their audience, ...heck, even their families back home. All hail the "REAL Chicago 7" (and just as political as the '68 Grant Park/DNC Chicago Seven radicals, too... and miraculously, with a BACKBEAT!)
Chicago are one of my favourite bands of all time. They have the melodies that weak my knees, they have the virtuosic musicianship that bring tears to my eyes. Seriously, no one else that I’ve listened to can bring a group of people together and have them be equally talented in both vocal & instrumental ability.
pretty amazing to think there has never been a better ensemble than these guys. Terry Kath. absolutely amazing!
Terry KATH absolutely donated at Tanglewood 1970, watch!!!
Such a shame that Terry Kath isn't with us any more. He was an astounding guitarist
And VOCALIST!
@@j2mutch1 Word! 😀 God Bless.
Terry is no longer here, but his spirit and his music will always be with us !! ❤♡💙
He was, and still is my all time favorite That was the end of Chicago when he past!
Watch the new documentary by his daughter! (On RUclips for around $5 bucks or so.. )
It was great! But drugs really do suck... they took so much talent to an early grave.
With Terry it was stupid handling of one of those evil handguns that led to his demise.
That's a shame for sure but no reason to banish a constitutionally guaranteed right.
RIP Mr. Kath.
Very few bands have this quality of musicianship, writing and vocals - with three terrific leads. Very, very few!
Not sure there are any or were any except original Chicago
Steely Dan comes to mind. ❤️
Um hm m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4086130894764409&id=100001026151518
Agreed... So much talent...
A Very Terrific Band!!
In their early first 5 years, perhaps the best band ever.
Tend to agree 👍 Those early Allman Brothers were right up there too !
Terry Kath ... The Heart and Soul of the greatest band of all time
No wonder Hendrix wanted this band to tour with him. Each and everyone of them rocks their ass off. All are so talented!!!!!?
Yes. His daughter said he sang with such passion. So true. I think that's the way he lived. I love the Saturday In the Park video (with Al Green in the "audience"). He's flipping burgers and stuff. I just want to give him a hug.
Terry hated the horns. I dig them. But I would have loved to have heard his record. He was to begin the day he passed
@@326vince Terry didn't "hate" the horn section. He just wanted to move in a different direction, without the horns.
@@326vince Though we never got to experience his power trio, I hear it in my minds ear. Tragic loss :(
And I read somewhere terry and jimi were thinking of performing together or jimi even toyed with the idea of joining Chicago... Just imagine jimi and Terry in the same band!! That blows me away
Three perfect singer, three perfect horns, a perfect rhythm section and plenty of great compositions. One of the best rock-bands ever.
Here in Wis. '.same - same- it don't get better than these guys BEST JAZZ ROCK THAT'LL EVER LIVE!❤❤❤❤
I am completely blown away!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rest in peace Terry Kath
You were the very best!!!!!!!!!
James Pankow is on fire. One of his best live raw performances. Robert's singing was exceptional. Peter Cetera on State of the Union was oustanding. Danny Seraphine tight on drums
Terry Kath was phenomenal as usual. A monster on rhythm guitar and undefeated on lead on Make Me Smile solo...
I agree. I especially loved "State of the Union"....what a groove! 👍👍
Seen TERRY KATH and Chicago in 71 for the first time I was 11. My older brother took me. Went home and nagged my father for a guitar...Thanks Terry thanks Dad!❤️❤️🎸😎
I take it that your Dad got you that Guitar, very cool connection.
Aways look in the cylinder. Just sayin
I saw them in ‘71 too! Hollywood Bowl. I asked for tix for my 13th Birthday. Dad insisted that he chaperoned me (afraid of the Devil’s Lettuce! Lol!). Dad was a classically trained musician, he thought he’d hate the concert… and walked out a fan! It became sort of a bonding thing with us, he loved Chicago.
RIP Terry and Dad.
Amazing days back then, and wow but Terry Kath was the best!
@@spiderreed350😅
Where did you see them?
These old concerts are great because Terry Kath really shines. You get to hear what a great player, great singer and great writer he was. Turn the damn radio off and watch these instead.
It is wonderful to have such a recording to watch and listen to!
Thank heavens this video has been posted here!
It is amazing to be able to watch “Chicago”, with Terry Kath and the full band in its original lineup!
Good sound quality in this video so far at 30 minutes in, video quality is fairly good as well, particularly considering that it is in 1972, I presume that this is a professional recording for a Japanese audience, since there are Japanese subtitles throughout the video, scrolling across the screen.
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
They had such a different flavor when Terry was in the lead. I liked most of the Cetera era material, but the edgy Kath era was awesome.
Just wanted to extend a huge thanks to whoever is responsible for this channel. It means a lot to see someone curating all these classic live performances of one of the greatest bands.
You're very welcome!
A very enjoyable set of our youth yrs n one hell of a Guitarist vocal plus n of course ,Chicago, ultimately best set of horns n all that may come to n from them 😎🎶🔜
@@terrykathspotlight9916the audio on this is phenomenal!
And a great underrated drummer.
Daniel Seraphine, the original drummer. An absolute cyclone!
Jimmy Hendrix once said Terry was the best guitarist in the universe! That's something coming from him!
Terry is beyond masterful , and fills out the band unbelievably so !
Chicago Transit Authority bought the album back in late 60s and still have it. Fantastic music and under rated guitarist Terry Kath. Man!!!!😊
Terry Kath Miss You Man!
Rest in Peace, Dear 👼.
God Bless.
My favorite band forever. So many memories flowing back from those years. Saw them in 69 and 73. Makes me cry and smile at the same time.
I wish I would have been able to see this incarnation of Chicago. Terry Kath was a fantastic guitar player, and he had a soulful voice. Alas, I was but an embryo when they filmed this concert. I am happy I can at least watch these old videos, and of course still listen to their music as it is timeless. Rest In Peace, Terry Kath. Gone too soon, but you live on through the music you made.
I am so happy to have seen him, just around this same yr.
Chicago was my 1st concert. I still think they were pure 🔥
I still enjoy this sound!
#RIP Terry Kath
An ABSOLUTE TREASURE ! Thanks for posting ! There is 'No Chicago' without Terry's brilliant guitar !
It was 50 years ago, with the release of Saturday In The Park, that I fell in love with Chicago and never looked back.
Quick story I saw Chicago 1970 July at Tanglewood I was 15 at that time. Also that's when Joshua television recorded that footage of that show. My older brother also shot 8 mm movies of that.show. quick note Terry was awesome. Head pretty much front row seats.
Such awesome musicianship that just doesn't exist anymore. I've loved Question 67 & 68 since I was 12 yrs old. So good to hear it again, since it's not one of the standards. Thanks for posting.
Awesome video thank you for locating it and sharing it. It is the raw Chicago Transit Authority!
Same as I witnessed in 1968 at Montreal‘s open theatre at the former expo 67 island.
Terry Kath was such an amazing guitarist. But I’m also loving the amazing placements of horns. To enjoy multiple instrumental solos in one song is just so cool. They are great. Don’t get me wrong. I love Chicago today but the earlier.CTA version remains 👍👍👍
True Quality Musicians..no auto tune crap...Never gets Old.thank you Chicago
the music is as fresh as it was 53 years ago.I saw them in concert in jacsonville in may. even though just 3 original members the new musicians blend in great.
Total guess...Lamm, Pankow and hmm🤔 ...another member of the brass section? (Or maybe Danny?) I've wanted to look at a new show but can't do it. I'm living in the past and enjoying it.
I have never watched them without Terry. It’s too much for me.
I agree...
It's just not the same. Never will be, ever. Will meet someday up there. You can bet on that!!
Damn, I love the sound of the trombone, I can't help it. Such a beautiful tone !
So glad to be able to have seen them twice. One with Terry Kath and one without. Love the music and man.
Terry Kath was up there with Hendrix, Clapton and the rest of them. He could play the guitar and sing with the BEST of them! Rip Terry 82

Awesome Band!!!
Listening to this great Band since the 70's!!!
Thanks very much for posting this. I have always loved Terry's amazing guitar work, musicianship and persona. He's one of very few that as I age (just turned 55 years young) I love his work even more. Without having that be the case, I wouldn't think it possible. Terry Kath was one of the truly greats of all time. Cheers!
Amazing footage. They were on their way to super stardom. Terry Kath especially extraordinary. He looked so happy to be playing for the appreciative Japanese people. Great audio also on this. A gem
Ive been listening these songs for over 50 years.

Love Terry's t-shirt!! Warehouse New Orleans!! Proud Louisiana girl loving Chicago forever!! Wooohooo!! Wish Terry could have continued on this earth. The amazing music he would have brought to us all!!!! Sigh... Much love to the entire band!!! 😍🤗😘💞💞
New Orleans here too. I went to the Warehouse for some concerts. But unfortunately didn't see when Chicago was there 😔

Watching this in 2020.Un Fnnn believable! No words for this level of greatness!!!
Just seeing this today for the first time. Amazing! Such a talented band where everyone gels perfectly
I was doing a stack of ironing and listening to some Chicago on RUclips in the other room when this came on. I didn't know what it was, but noticed at once the brilliance of the performances and when I finished my work, I realized that it was the Japan Tour which was always supposed to be one of the best, and the video is so much better than previous clips I'd seen. ... I'll be saving this, thanks so much for posting!
He is the greatest musician… I was lucking to experience In Pittsburgh PA in 1976 live, I will never forget that experience and the way he carried the performance for Chicago. On top of that, thanks to Michael I fell that every day his spirit and soul continues with me. His artistry has certainly influenced how I view the world and the man I strive to be.
Simply PRICELESS, OUTSTANDING, MAGIC, TIMELESS.....you name it !
Terry Kath is the most underrated guitarist ever. This guy was amazing. Wish I could have been at this concert but I was 11 years old. I grew up on this music and still love it to this day. I miss Terry's soulful voice.
Never gets old, only gets better...fantastic band all the way around❣️Thanks for posting...🌎✌🏼🎶
Even though the camera work is kind of rough on the eyes this footage is priceless. This IS Chicago. Unfettered by AOR hell.
There are some mistakes but the performance is good. The sound quality at times is pretty bad. But these guys were so good that the footage remains enjoyable. Gloriously live, unfiltered, raw, powerful. They were more edgy than many would know.
Kath really shines in Dialogue and Richard. He gave that Strat a good workout. Some of those fast, tight bluesy riffs had me thinking about SRV's smoking solos. Long live Terry Kath. As Joe Walsh said, he gave Chicago that 'rub' which made them such an exciting band, especially live. Insane playing by Terry in 25 or 6 to 4. A studio Les Paul was an interesting choice to play in live performances.
What a great evaluation of this event from you.
The best live version of 25 or 6 to 4. I've ever heard.
Creative blend of Rock , Blues , Jazz , R&B with meaningful lyrics and outstanding musicianship , especially Terry Kath , those first three albums were dynamic and innovative , afterwards they pivoted to a more pop sound and they lost their soul...oh well
This is beyond amazing!!
Always has been my favorite band past 50 yrs
Wonderful played Terry , and may U rest in peace and wonderful music ❤❤❤🙏🏻
This was an incredible band...got to see them live at the Westbury Music Fair on Long Island..forget the year but never the memory...got to see them up close the venue was small...power power power............these were times you could afford to see groups....todays prices are 150 to 2000 dollars for a ticket...outragious..
Love Chicago! One if the best bands ever! I went to two of there concerts in NY. In the 70s! Amazing music and lyrics!
with Terry?
sen this a couple days ago thanks for posting
I found Chicago were at their best when Terry Kath
was with them
one of America's best all-time bands.
Never saw Terry play a LP before. He was definitely the leader of Chicago. I remember the day I heard of his death. I was in the kitchen and heard it on my transistor radio. I was just a young teen but it was a complete kick in the gut to me. I couldn't wrap my head around his death at the time.
I still can't wrap my head around. Such a shame
I remember, too. They said he was playing Russian Roulette.
My high school is near the Nippon Budokan,
so I went to this concert.
I still remember it clearly.
Saw these guys in the early 70’s at UConn and to this day, it was the b st concert I ever saw. Played forever and they were the tightest group I ever saw. Every one in the group was a great musician.
He was a great bass player too.. Check out Robert Lamms' album Skinny Boy... Terry was the bass player... brilliant. I must add that Danny Seraphine is one of the great drummers of all time.
Danny is quality for this sort of band. You couldnt have Keith Moon,Danny Danillo or Charlie Watts in Chicago .Its like theyve been selected for their excellence.
Unbelievable.! I’m so fortunate to have experienced this wonderful band!
Saw them about 6 months before this video. Terry Kath and Danny Seraphine drove the band. Amazing!
I love Chicago at this time , I especially like the song Lowdown WOW , this was their Peak time , God they were so great , I could listen to them rveryday ! !
Terry, the man!
My math teacher used to stop class he would let everyone know Chicago was his band. He played bass and sang also. They are phenomenal. Thanks.
I saw them in Johnstown, PA the fall of 70 and totally zoned out, so great!! Terry played a copy Les Paul for one song that he bought at a local music store!! So cool. Terry was the driving force behind Chicago!! They were never the same after he passed!! And, yes, I'm that old!! Lol
God bless Johnstown, PA.
Oh why oh WHY doesn’t I have a damn time machine ?!?? Born in the wrong era …. This is so good . Thanks for uploading . God dammit !!!
This has to be one of the best performances of the tune (Introduction) the guys ever did. Just stunning with the dynamics, the control. unbelievable collection of musical talent so great and today so unusual. This group could ONLY have been born in the USA!
The best of the best band all time!!!Salut from Saint Petersburg.
Vladislav Ryabokon Only the Beatles were in their league..
Terry launches into Free Form Guitar at 52:20...right and left hand tapping WAY before Eddie. Genius.
@Dan Snyder Good call, Dan. Django Reinhardt sometimes gets credit for originating that technique, but not sure how accurate that may be.
@@speezer22 To bad we only get about a half minute of Django but wow. PS Free from guitars was put out around 68.
Look at Green Tambourine and you'll see fret tapping there by Bill Bartlett (of Lemon Pipers and later Ram Jam's Black Betty).
Les Paul was tapping in late 40’s folks
Terry Kath was a force of nature no doubt. You just don’t see that strength like that often.
Terry Kath was in a class by himself! I've seen Chicago 3 times. Twice with Terry & once many years after he died.
It became a much different band without him & not in a good way. I'm not talking about his replacement guitarists. They were OK. It was the material. They became a pop ballad group. With Terry not only did they have the greatest guitarist on the planet but an outstanding vocalist & great funky jazz/rock material that was head & shoulders above their later material.
Now, so many people have quit so they are a shell of their former selves
Wow. And I thought Tanglewood was the shit. What a band! If only I was old enough to have seen them back then. Kath, Lamm, and Cetera had so much talent.
Eva89117 Tanglewood is my favorite but this one in Japan comes in a close second. Peter's voice is excellent in this concert.
Eva89117 Ah, it was good times, grasshopper!!
I’ve listened to every 25or6to4 on RUclips and the best version is Carnegie Hall, Cetera’s vocals are on fire and Kath’s solo is the best ive found by him and absolutely the best guitar solo ever(by anyone)I’ve ever listened to. unfortunately it has no video.
Right on and I agree with you. There was something very unique about the performance at Carnegie Hall, That is how I define the greatness of Terry Kath, his guitar was an absolute blast furnace on the entire album.
I saw them early 70’s, when Terry was in his prime, and Cetera’s songs were getting him a lot of play. So, now, with 4 of the 7 still together, it’s so obvious how important and how much loss there is without those 3 key pieces!!
unreal band. fantastic dramatic studied. amazing.
This is just amazing. One of the greatest musical performances ever. Every concert they added so many new improvisations. Danny on the drums drives the whole concert with such flair and rhythm. So glad this was captured on film. Amazing
WHY AM I JUST NOW SEEING THIS ??!! @54:00 my world is officially ROCKED by Terry Kath and Chicago.
Exactly!
Greatest band that there ever was back in 1972. I grew up with this band and saw them many times in concert.
For me this is the best formation since the group existed. Especially Terry Kat Serafin on drums
Admiro a Chicago porque del año 68 al 72 tocaron casi 500 conciertos y siempre con su indiscutible calidad musical ! Terry Kath was amazing. There’s a reason Jimi Hendrix was amazed when he first saw Terry play. So sad he died so young
As much as I love Neil Peart, all the Rush fans REALLY need to check out Danny Serraphine... one of the greatest drummers of all time!!!
Never gets enough recognition.
Time has proven that he was as irreplaceable as Terry & Peter.
