I love Chicago but Terry Kath was the beast that kept them relevant with their style of music. Most underrated guitar player ever. Wished he he lived longer and got straight to make his solo album we all dream of
Terry Kath should be spoken of when great guitarists and musicians of this generation are mentioned. His voice is often overlooked, he sounded like a white Ray Charles. And that's high praise!
There is no help if you are not committed. Then you did it on your own. Terry Kath was amazing. His whole notes were quarter notes. Speed and eloquence not seen since. RIP good man.
I saw Chicago in 1973. At lake Spivey Henry county Georgia..along with grand funk railroad they were great I was. 19 years old seems like yesterday. I will all ways miss Terry Kath the soul of the band ..Rest in peace...
Kath in a St. Louis Blues shirt and the rest of the band in lime green and jewel cowboy shirts. See it coming... The end of a great band and one hellva GREAT guitar player. Sad day for good music...
I was 15 when I first heard Chicago Transit Authority. 1970. Terry was the soul of the group. He was so bad ass that The late Jimi Hendrix said of him that he was better than him. What an awesome compliment coming from most likely the greatest guitar player ever. R.I.P. the both of you greats man what would of been if these two had cut an album together, mind blowing for sure.
Yeah, but it could have been prevented if he had stopped screwing around with the drugs and drink. If he had just gotten some help, he'd still be here making music.
Yeah, but 9.9 outta 10 are never gonna seek help. Its just the nature of addiction. Usually a person has to hit rock bottom before they seriously consider reaching out for help. By all accounts, while Terry knew he had a problem, he wasn't close to givin' up his crutches.
groundhog713 ,, playing around with guns after not sleeping 3 nights didn't help. Again the drugs but where were the band members or Danny Seraphine his closest friend in the band the drummer,, or any of his friends? it just seems like somebody might have lended a hand and took care of Terry Kath from being up for 3 nights ask him why he would be cleaning his gun at 3 in the morning or something anything obviously he needed some help.
Scott Loveday He was up 3 days? That's crazy just doing tons of cocaine I'm sure. I think of that also, nobody said anything that he was putting guns to his head, pulling the triggers? He had already done it once. I imagine the other people there were as high as him, and getting rid of stuff before the police showed up. They had to deal with this in that mindframe, I picture it as a real nightmare scene...
Wow! Now I remember why Chicago was a great band! Terry Kath was a one man wrecking crew. What a shame we lost him so young. Great concert. Great video for that era.
BTW-Everyone talks about the great loss of Terry Kath, and rightly so, but give it up for my man Danny Seraphine on the drums. As much soul as Kath played with on the guitar, so goes for Danny on the drums. He's the one who dreamed up those drum parts. His drumming sketces became as much a part of the song as the vocals or melody lines. I wish they hadn't had the differences of opinion that led to his leaving the band.
I've always felt that Danny's playing was the "beating heart" of Chicago. That could be said about any great drummer but he really was an amazing guy to watch play. The utter joy. I also felt that Terry was the soul of the band (which is why it died for me after he actually died) and no question that Lamm was the "brain," the architect behind their success in the late60s/70s. He wrote so much of their music, whole albums on his back. It's no wonder his songwriting burned out. I used to think that was awful, that they should've spread it out and not have done all those double albums, but Terry was a shooting star not long for this world and it's fitting that he got to play on Lamm's best work. For me, these three are the core of the band, not to not Cetera, which is a common thing to do nowadays. I too dislike their Cetera-centric stuff and never listen to it but his contributions, his bass playing and lead vocals/harmonies can't be denied. The horn/woodwind work is just the icing on the cake. Trying to imagine Chicago as just a 4 piece w/o the horns is like, pointless, folks.
Wayne Dent he doesn't even know why they threw him put, which is a shitty thing to do, particularly to a FOUNDING MEMBER. You might like his story, "The hairpiece that saved my life"
Thanks for this. I never got to see them live, but this is a pretty good substitute. My enthusiasm for Chicago went down when Terry Kath died, and it annoys me that he is not recognised among the great guitarists.
You know that it is confirmed that when Jimi Hendrix was asked: How is it being the most guitar player in the world? He answered: Don’t ask me. Ask Terry Kath!….so even if only some connoisseurs know him, Jimi said it…and even Fender released a replica of his Tele. …
Lucky I got to see this tour when it was at Alpine valley in WI so I got to see my idle that made me pick up the guitar I will think god to this day that I got to see Terry
Someone on her remarked that Terry was the "first Stevie Ray Vaughan"... something like that... and in this video here, there is Terry wearing a beret, just like the ones Stevie Ray wore!!
A really solid performance with Terry Kath, while he was still with us, here on this Earth. Thanks for sharing! Please have an excellent and awesome day!
Thank you! It is so good to see and hear something of this high quality ... especially from this era of Chicago and Terry Kath. I love the chatter and banter between songs!
OMG , freakin' Terry - the best! The horns! Danny slammin'! Bobby testifyin'! CETERA! (Even if he does look really high)! Thanks so much for this post! THIS was Chicago.

Chicago has, through the years, hired some very talented players to replace the originals. I saw them before they were the commercial phenom they became, and I saw them in between then and now, and for my money, you cannot beat them in this, their first decade of playing to a world wide audience. The first three albums were revolutionary.
Maryann, Terry's daughter Michelle created a community dedicated to her dad, The Terry Kath Fan Group, on Facebook...please check it out, it is a wonderful place devoted to The Man.
i saw them live twice, the first time they came our stupid the arena was empty, the band called everybody to the front and and gave a hellof a show. A yer later it was hard to get a ticket...
If I ever have unlimited space and money, I'll put one of those insanely heavy Rhodes electric pianos on my list...i never met Terry Kath, but I've known the band in passing since I was a kid. Nice guys. Danny has a pretty good tone for the mistake known as concert toms...
Lyrically Scrapbook reminds me of Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple. Both songs are about life in a band, playing live etc. and both songs mention Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.
These guys always reminded me of Little Feat and Tower of Power with a touch of Weather Report.. Couldn't get enough of Chicago growing up. This was about as good as Chicago gets, talented band but after Terry's death that was it. The wind in their sale was gone IMO. Amazing thing is Terry is driving the band but driving all this with a transistor amp.. My dad and Pete Cetera father worked together.
Ten years definitely took its toll on the band constant touring the drugs the alcohol never the same :( When they lost Terry the band has never been the same he was most certainly The Heart and Soul of Chicago !! The band most certainly needed a break Robert Lamm has always said they should have renamed the Band
How is it that Jimi Hendrix, whom the vast majority of both musicians and music fans consider to be the greatest guitar player ever, at one time referred to another guitarist as being greater than even he was, and yet that same guitarist is still continually shunned to this very day by nearly every poll/list of the greatest guitarists of all time? That guitarist of course is Mr. Terry Kath.
I often wonder if Terry would have stayed with the band during the Pete Cetera love ballad days. Or if that era would have been allowed to happen if Terry was there.

May have been mentioned before, but Terry seems to be bored with the routine and yet still flawless. They all look like they are burned out from touring and lifestyle.
Danny is a PHENOMENAL drummer!!! Terrable what they did to him... they lost the last remanents of their sound when they threw Danny away. Losing Terry, and Peter was bad enough but losing Danny too...

There is monetary value in being the songwriter on songs chosen for the album so that may have been one root of the problem. However, Peter's ascension in the band made a lot more money for all of them. There definitely had to be jealousy and other nutty things that break up bands when too much drinking and drugging is happening.
I love Chicago but Terry Kath was the beast that kept them relevant with their style of music. Most underrated guitar player ever. Wished he he lived longer and got straight to make his solo album we all dream of
The dude was not underrated. Hendrix said the dude was better then him.
no one records music like this anymore; not in rock or in jazz, just a unique group of talent and creativity.
The whole band....sooooo talented. I was 12 years old when my big bro bought Chicago's Albums.Still love the music to this day!
Terry Kath should be spoken of when great guitarists and musicians of this generation are mentioned. His voice is often overlooked, he sounded like a white Ray Charles. And that's high praise!

Terry Kath...Legend.

Grew up listening to Chicago in the 70s. Great ❤
I watch terry Kath here and I'm blown away. The thought sets in, that he had less than a year to live. So dearly missed.

He accidentally shot himself by living the life he led as a hopeless routine
Great version of 25 or 6 to 4; Terry was on fire!
The solo during 25 or 6 to 4 is absolutely incredible. And I thought the studio version was amazing
Mad, mad skills. Christ on a bike!
Wow! Now I remember why Chicago was a great band! Terry Kath was a one man wrecking crew. What a shame we lost him so young. Great concert. Great video for that era.

Correction: he told me personally they booted him out, then wouldn't tell him WHY. :) Seems like a real nice guy, I can't imagine he deserved it.
Yeah, he had great rhythm, this band has some songs with tempo changes, that's for for sure, especially the early music.
my fav band finally got into the rock and roll hall of fame,,,,,,,this is a great concert,,,,check it out,,,,,congrats CHICAGO,,,,,,
I saw them two times in San Diego Sports Arena in the early seventys. I'll always keep those memories deep within my soul.
"Searching So Long" is clearly the best of the show. I have only realized recently what a great song this is.
Again...I'm speechless. Terry Kath on "I've Been Searching So Long". Peter Cetera not too shabby either.
Sound recording quality is flawless, especially for 1977
Thanks for this. I never got to see them live, but this is a pretty good substitute. My enthusiasm for Chicago went down when Terry Kath died, and it annoys me that he is not recognised among the great guitarists.

I was also at that Alpine Valley show. Never would have dreamed it was the only chance I had to see Terry play.
I was there❤ does Alpine valley still do concerts?
Awesome. I've seen 25 or 6 to 4 from this show and it's great to see more. Thanks for posting.
A REAL band that plays real instruments ..........This shit is so awesome!........Thanks utube

He's one of the most under rated guitarist.
Great Concert in Germany-Thank You For This

Would give anything to be at this concert. I think they knew the Germans were so into the jamming part of chicago

That guitarist of course is Mr. Terry Kath.
MelodizeLife Thank you, that’s precisely what I’m talking about!
that's true jimi said "look,i know I'm good but this guy is off the charts"
Because Hendrix was busy setting fire to sh*t...?
in case anyone was wondering the weird percussion instrument Laudir Soares de Oliveira is playing is called a "waterphone"
The real Chicago died with Terry. The soft rock band isn't my Chicago.
Pianoman 70s style I agree.
That's a fact
totally right
I often wonder if Terry would have stayed with the band during the Pete Cetera love ballad days. Or if that era would have been allowed to happen if Terry was there.
Kath probably would have left and did something on his own.Don't you think? The man was inredible. The music we missed out on.SHIit

Wow! Jimi Hendrix's Idol shown in rare form. Truly Special!
hands down..Terry new how to work that guitar.
Starting at 1:03:06, pure bliss...
Although this music is loaded w horns, but guitar takes an egual or a lead part sometimes. Nice blend. I like Chicago w Terry and Cetera. And the drummer is pretty good.

the guitar on uptown is insane
Terry was great. What a player!
Jenny M
Jenny M yes I bet Terry hated all the ballads!
And they follow up the incredible guitar solos on "Uptown" with....ugh..."If You Leave Me Now." I love how Pankow mockingly intros our "John Denver medley."
and Robert sounds awesome!
TERRY KATH
terry must've been a big hockey fan. i've seen him wearing loads of different ones. blackhawks i wasn't too surprised to see given what band he plays for, but i've seen him with many others too.
Cetra and his 12 sting guitar, follow-up, "Uptown".
Oh My God I can't stop, laughing. 40: 23- 44:41.
Drummer was top notch.
Support, Support, Support all of the prior comments, except need to amplify that Holy Crap!!! What really superior stuff....I can type lots here....
Peter Cetera in sequins: a glimpse into the horror that was to be after we lost Terry.
Danny Seraphine jammed!!!!!
Terry did it all with just 1 guitar. in contrast I remember recently mark knopfler auctioned off a huge collection of guitars he used to write the music in his catalog
May have been mentioned before, but Terry seems to be bored with the routine and yet still flawless. They all look like they are burned out from touring and lifestyle.
Terry played better than Jimmy Hendrix and had a voice very much like Ray Charles .. he was the man..
Danny is a PHENOMENAL drummer!!! Terrable what they did to him... they lost the last remanents of their sound when they threw Danny away. Losing Terry, and Peter was bad enough but losing Danny too...
I would say the closest would be Santana but this band was just on another level. The core band it self was off the charts then you add the horns.
One of the best from X >>> Once or Twice @ 45:10
*mutters the word "sequined suit"*
*Peter and Walter look up*
Anyone know who told Pankow to shut up? ... CLASSIC
I think that was Danny...putting him in his place they were on coke binges back then, I think brass went heavy. I remember Lee saying in BTM on VH1 that he could barely stand still onstage at that point.
Danny
Terry Kath Spotlight I've seen him under 10 feet away at drum clinics. It's even more impressive.
Im pretty sure it was Terry. Danny said in an interview Terry called the shots on stage and after he tells Pankow to shut up he counts in the song. That was my take on it.
terry could of had an amazing solo career
Is that a Jazz Bass?
Joel T135 EAS RSMV yeah
and a Ripper
Terry is smoking @ 35:00 & 45:00
Indeed, as always :-)
Do the production people know what lights are? Half the concert was in darkness.
Dude....it was the mid seventies!!!!!....what ya want them to control the lights from their tablets????
this was true - I attended so many concerts during that time
mike deridder
Camoflagues the dope smoke! Silly millennial.
The music died with TK, and departures of PC and DS
sure got that right
Chicago died with Terry but the music lives forever.
There is only one Terry Kath
It's too bad you didn't add "Anyway You Want" from this concert. Terry did one rockin' blues riff on that tune that most people haven't heard or seen before!
I think Jimmy Trombone is a little wasted. And yes I know Trombone isn't his real name.
12:23 to 13:20
And what was going on @ about 40:21? A little head-butting?
hey Pankow.. shut up.. I guess he did not like the fact that Peter wrote the great song..If you leave me now. And this is where the friction in the band started.. imo.
I agree. Pankow's shouting was getting annoying, right in the middle of the songs.
His trombone playing was off, also. Must have been the cocaine...
Drummers don't see ballads as being interesting. We got bored AF. So it's unlikely you'll see any drummer going on about "If you leave me now."
I can understand the difference of opinion, although I like the changes in it.
There is monetary value in being the songwriter on songs chosen for the album so that may have been one root of the problem. However, Peter's ascension in the band made a lot more money for all of them.
