I think a lot of people are forgetting how technology works on stage. Mariah's in ears weren't working. What the artist hears and what the band hears especially when there's a backing track makes a whole difference. There is a bit of a delay and when Mariah's in ears monitors aren't working it makes it difficult especially in freezing cold temperatures and in a loud environment like times square. Let's not forget that the following year she made up for this performance and performed live. She is also shown many times since it's performance that she can she can emphasis on the word can sing live and blow you fishes out of the damn water that say she can't sing anymore.

I'm sorry, I love her but regardless of this difficult situation with the technology, she doesn't respond in a professional manner at all. I understand that it must be disappointing for an artist who has prepared not to be able to deliver, but part of being an artist is being able to improvise. Since her microphone was working, she could have used the situation to simply sing something, but running from left to right in an insulted manner and then leaving the stage in an almost stroppy manner at the end is unprofessional.
It is as frustrating to see Mariah sabotaged over and over again, the good thing is that she defended herself and the production of the show had to apologize and they invented her the following year where she took her own sound engineer and sang 100% live. I think Mariah is the only singer who has to prove her talent over and over again, but what was a sabotage ended up being a positive thing for Mariah.
