Considering many things about Manfred’s character as shown in every game he has appeared in, it’s definitely the latter.
Yeah, it's definite that she became a prosecutor only because of the shoes she had to fill as the daughter of such a legendary prosecutor (plus the constant "expectations" everyone had of her that she tells us about at the end of JFA). She had tons of potential. I wish we had seen her get some more decisive character development than have her devolve into a simple slapstick comedy duo with Gumshoe :/
Wait so... if she only walked his path to gain his approval and love, think about her relationship with Edgeworth, who actually wanted to be a prosecutor. She must have felt even more threatened by him, because he was the only one of von Karma's 'children' that was as driven about prosecuting as he was, albeit in a different way.
@@debastiansebeste Slight problem with that is that Von Karma has another daughter who isn't a prosecutor, so it's obvious he doesn't exactly just forcing his children to become prosecutors as well. LET'S GO finally someone acknowledging Manfred's theme from the anime, it suits him perfectly as this menace he is in The Inherited Turnabout and Turnabout Goodbyes
2nd Comment: I always hated Franziska but after seeing this and knowing how Sebastian was treated, she suffered a lot because of Manfred. In fact, everyone suffered because of HIM. Having a terrible father can change who you are and make you a monster, I still don't completely like her, but you gave me sympathy points for her seeing as how she suffers (or at least now suffered) in silence. Good job Debastian. Bravo.
Yeah, Franziska did grow up in a terrible family environment with a terrible person as a father figure and someone to look up to. Good thing she didn't turn into a murderer like him too tbh. Thanks for the analysis and your kind words mate! 😁
Idk if you've seen the anime but Franziska is a lot softer around the edges and more likeable than in the games. I also didn't like her much in the trilogy.
@@Topaz_Estrella The anime was great in how it showed that whole family. Manfred was depicted in a nuanced fashion, rather than just the unapologetic evil he is in the games.
Kay: "So you pretended you'd arrest us, just to scare us and laugh with us? That's a twisted and sadistic sense of humor you have prosecutor!" Franziska: "...I whip people for fun. this is known!" also I'm pretty sure, that she'd known about sprit channeling since her first bout with phoenix, given that she presented the photo phoenix's private chat with Mia to the court, and her "glad to see you're in such good "spirits" Ms. Fey" comment also, Maya accidently summoning Van Zieks made me laugh so Hard.
I am here for Franziska's character development! Honestly, idk why the idea that Franziska is just as much of a victim of Manfred's machinations as Miles was took so long to come to light. She most likely wasn't born so cold and mean, she was made to be like that, her lashing out (literally and metaphorically), were probably the only way she could express herself. Also Manfred's typical narcissistic patterns (deflecting fault, refusing to acknowledge his own mistakes, making anyone the enemy when their tactics dont work, etc. is classic NPD) obviously would have affected Franziska very badly growing up in that. Even his reason for why he was so hard on her is pure selfishness, and he immeditaely dismisses her objections as failures on her part when she won't play his game. Good for her getting closure, now onto therapy with the rest of the cast!
don't use a mental illness as a description for a shitty person. that's a really fucked up thing to do, none of those are traits of npd, they're traits of being a bad person, just because someone's a bad person doesn't mean they're mentally ill
She was forced to start prosecuting when she was 13, another victim of manfred’s vicious scheme’s… I’m glad that corrupted man is dead, he only cares about getting a guilty verdict, not to uncover the truth… all for the sake of perfection. Thank you Miles Edgeworth for saving everyone 15 years later
Ngl, I'm in love with your videos. I love how high efforted it is and it especially feels in character. I like Franzy already but this makes me love her more. Ngl I wish she got more screentime and development. I also like how similar Maya and Franz are. They seem like polar opposites but they do share similarities like having f-ed up families, leading a name (Maya being the master and Franz leading the von Karma name). I honestly wish they get more interactions and them being friends. Anyways, I love your videos, it brings amazing depth into the characters. And van Zieks LITERALLY surprised me. 😁
I agree full about Maya and Franziska and their similarities, and I hate that the two barely even interacted in the main games. Much wasted potential on a possible friendship of the two there :/ Thanks for your kind words! :D
Gosh I love this-- Franziska finally gets to tell off her father for being the sick and obsessed man that he was! (Of course the ending is great too pfpff)
Imma be honest, my first interaction with the Ace Attorney Universe was Felix White, the most legendary defense attorney of'em all. After, I went straight to the anime and honestly, it wasn't as bad as most ppl say. It further explained some things and answered some questions the games had left unanswered. But that theme... what the hell. I wish they had used a variation of that theme for him in the games, it fits him so well. And about the video itself... Manfred deserved that. Franziska went up a few ranks in my Ace Attorney character tier list because of what she did to her garbage father. This is part of my headcanon fr
@@George-iz2ce xD tbh the anime's first season that I've watched had some terribly animated moments and left crucial stuff out that I hated (such as Dee Vazquez's reason for treating Jack Hammer the way she did). I've heard it gets better at season 3 but I haven't got there yet. Nevertheless, despite the plot and animation issues at least it had amazing voice acting and music
I was at the edge of my seat the entire video MAN THIS WAS SO GOOD. it felt like I was watching a full-fledged drama show. And the ending joke? IT WAS HILARIOUS
Franziska is DEBEST... oh wait... The moment the 2009 truth theme played, after the scene switches to Sebastian and goes back to Franziska, WOW... the tears, and the hard facts and surreal dialogue from her... This is the best I've seen from her in all the games, and probably the most emotionally engaging scene compared to any in them, breaking every barrier.
You're always on the good things here. However, 3 years after Von Karma's death, I wonder if Maya is still here with Phoenix, as he was normally disbared, and she was in training in Kurain village, or Khur'ain. Anyway, good work!
Well, Manfred was said to have died some time in prison, between December 2016 and February 2019, so for my headcanon I put his death during 2016 and this vid right before Phoenix's disbarment. (That's why Franziska says "nearly three years", so I could have some vagueness and freedom in his time of death 😉)
Lmao Karuma and Kazuma being that similar? You might be onto something here. But I thought Kazuma is a defense attorney? I haven't played beyond sergeant Nosa's testimony yet so I don't know much details of TGAA
@@debastiansebeste what i actually meant was to have a convo between Franziska and Kazuma Asogi, who mentions he *had* a heirloom katana named Karuma. Kazuma also mentions how one of his father's subordinates named themself after the sword itself. (its canon) so that makes Franziska wonder if that could be her ancestor or something just a thought lol, hope it clears things up

It would be interesting, but it will probably never come as it would require new from-scratch sprites and I would never settle for the sprites of another character xD
ngl,all this time i've been imagining franziska getting instantly disbarred in the first ever time she used her whip against someone in the courtroom in JFA for physical assault
Takumi truly blew that one by sidelining Franziska, she had too much potential to spend the whole trilogy and Edgeworth duology entirely as the slapstick comedy medium
@@debastiansebeste Main series I kind of get, you don't want to have the same antagonist again and again for a game like Ace Attorney But there's no excuse for the Investigation games to skip on her like that
wait since when Franziska has a Sister they never showed her at all in ace attorney series or ever mentioned at all or I'd think I missed that part so I'd like to hear about this Cause I tought Franziska is only child to manfred von karma
Manfred had mentioned in PW:AA that in 2016 he had a granddaughter who was 5 yo(?). At the time Franziska was 14-15, so it's generally accepted that Franziska has a much older sibling. And the general consensus among the fanbase is that that sibling is a sister, so I just rolled with it :p
@@debastiansebeste I see altough it would've been awsome if you made a video about a Full Trial of Jeffrey Masters you did made similiar to Aftermaths but I'd curious how the trial would've went Gregory Edgeworth and his assistant Raymond Shields Facing Manfred Von Karma in court now that would be awsome
HAHAHAHA, BAROK VAN ZICKS KILLED ME- Ahem, alright Scenario is so good! Makes you think about the tragedy and pettiness of Manfred... Even being spirit, he is just sadly perfectionist, who simply wanted be great and invincible... And I'm so sorry for Franziska:( Oh, yes Отдельное спасибо за русские субтитры!!
Well, Sebastian could definitely use some polishing, but having Edgeworth and Franziska (if she goes easy on him) as his mentors would help him in no time :D
@@debastiansebeste in all honesty edgeworth is more of a father figure to him imo. Franziska would be like a big sister to him (or something else maybe?) and just both develop and improve themselves case after case. Btw, Kay x Sebastian or Franziska x Sebastian? be honest pls
@@godzillayaz tbh I don't really ship Sebastian with someone in particular (I'm not much into ships, which you may also notice in my vids xD). But if I had to choose one of two, then definitely KayxSebastian. I dunno, they're just both kiddy and cute, pretty opposite personalities, and I believe a relationship with Franziska would be quite smothering for Sebastian (plus I prefer her as a big sis to him :p)
In her canon iteration, she kinda (very questionable) reformed to find the “perfect” truth instead of a perfect record. While it is kind of okay for her arc to go that way, and that her whippings are just because she is hot-blooded, this vid is way more satisfying to progress her character arc. In fact, I even pitied Manfred. Because I still hold the belief that nobody would become this obsessed and psychotic at birth. I pitied that he never found the most important things in from of him which is a family. Instead he chased after a concept that is the anti-thesis of being human. Perfection. I pity Manfred for having something so many dream of. And wasted it for a mere undefeated record. As for Franziska, I still hope she will make her future appearances in the franchise with actual character development. Even if her gimmick still had to rely on finding the PERFECT truth.
Eh, it's possible he was born murderous. Psychopathy is a born condition. In rare cases, young children have committed cold-blooded murder. It's entirely possible that three or four year old Manfred was still a vicious psychopath who... I dunno, could have intentionally brutally killed a baby sibling of his in their crib. But it's also possible that he was just a normal (but probably abused, the entire VK family gives generational trauma vibes and physical abuse of children was very common in the 1950s, I wouldn't be surprised if his father beat the hell out of him daily) little kid before he was twisted into a monster by his relentless pursuit of perfection.
Ugh I've seen it and while I was writing this vid I was constantly thinking "Don't forget that Manfred is wearing Maya's clothes throughout this whole vid" xD
can you also make a video about Miles and Raymond having discussion with Gregory Edgeworth similiar to like that it would really awsome to see trio bein reunited afterall Miles is the son of Gregory and Raymond is the apprentice and a assistant to Gregory
Iirc, it's mentioned by Phoenix to Franziska in Justice for All that Manfred died after some time in prison (no details are provided by the game though)
@@welon17 found the citation. (He had a perfect win record for 40 long years... But now, he is gone from this world...) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations. Capcom. Episode: Bridge to the Turnabout (in English). 2007.
The obsession of perfection is what make Manfred turn into a devil. If it wasn't because of his perfect record, DL-6 Incident would not happened and Mia will be next master Fey clan. I prefer Trial and Failure instead of perfect with cheating though,as a human, perfection is what im afraid of
That's the thing, Manfred never cared about the truth. The only thing that mattered to him was an eternal and untainted record of victories. Gregory tainted that record with the penalty, and Phoenix ruined it by beating him twice. Because the objectively right thing should always prevail over subjective victory
SPOILER AHEAD FOR THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY AND SPIRIT OF JUSTICE "You got arrested twice and both times Miles had to save you" Maya...how many times were YOU arrested and Phoenix saved you? At least twice . Your first meeting with him in Turnabout Sisters where you got accused of murdering your sister Mia Then there was the times in Khura'in when he saved your butt from prison and probably execution
Maya's point was that Kay had also been arrested plenty of times, so she didn't have the right to reassure Maya by telling her "don't worry we won't be arrested while I'm here" :p
Man, this was so well-written! It's like the completion of Franziska's... Well, not exactly redemption arc, but this was still really good! Think maybe you could cover how Aura Blackquill's trial went? All we know is that she's in prison, her brother was looking for someone to defend her (there's no way The Wright Agency would after what she did), and no one mentioned her again.
𝘼 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨! Seriously though , good job. I was waiting for a video regarding the menace himself to appear. Keep doing what you do best !
To be fair, in both of my vids where Manfred appears (this and the one with his penalty) I have him getting completely owned (by Franziska and Blaise respectively), so you could say I haven't made him live up to his name yet 😂
Franziska's cry sprite yep, I took Sebastian's tear from his stingy man tear sprite and pasted it on Franziska's angry sprite frames As for Maya, I took her sprites from Project X Zone 2 and I upscaled them in Waifu2x, then animated them myself (though Maya's cry sprite is also a custom one of mine as it didn't exist in PXZ)
In the first game Von Karma mentions that he has a granddaughter old enough to talk. At the time Franziska was 14, so we can safely assume that Von Karma had an older child other than Franziska. And the fanbase generally prefers to believe that Manfred's older child is a girl :p (in other words, it's game canon that Franziska has an older sibling, but we don't canonically know if they're a brother or a sister)
Honestly, I now wonder about the potential what if of "What if Manfred killed Blaise and not Gregory for the penalty?" Though granted, it is probably not too interessting. In a lot of ways, it probably mirrors the "what if he didn't shoot anyone?"-what if without too many extras.(I guess Manfed probably has to be stealthier about his illegal methods tho because he just removed the guy who usually covered for him) 10:28 Franziska:"I only whip my enemies from now on. And you, Kay. You have chosen to become my enemy!"
I mean, it's not that hard. You find the whip popup, put it into one frame with the sfx and a delay of 100-200ms, then in the next frame the whack sfx with screen shake and flash.

So question concerning spirit channeling in this game: Both Pearl and maya channeled Mia’s spirit at some point, at which Mia was summoned wearing either pearls or mayas garments. But when maya summons manfred here (and I know this isn’t possible due to the sprite not existing) wouldn’t he be wearing mayas clothes ? It’s either one of two things imo: Maya has upped her channeling skills OR (and this is where it gets hilarious) Manfred would be seen wearing mayas robes. I do have an issue with this video, namely that it’s based on assumption that Manfred was an abusive father to Franziska, even though it's never explicitly stated in the games (and in the anime adaptation even contradicted in one episode). More about that in this video by Wendy Rocket: ruclips.net/video/QNfnWZ_-yjY/видео.htmlsi=DnEpa9fXXOy3l-M-
Makes me sad that this is what you got from the video, that I imply that Manfred was abusive to Franziska, because there's not a single intention of that. The way it's built, I hoped the video (especially with Franziska's last speech) makes it clear that Franziska has no issues about any "abuse" from Manfred towards her, but for 1) his actions towards others (like the Edgeworths), and 2) for making her live her life under the delusion of the "Von Karma perfection", when Manfred himself was the lowest of lows After all, when confronted by Franziska, Manfred demands the respect he expects from his daughter (since she starts by acting hostile to him), and afterwards speaks to her with logical arguments. I thought that, at least, is clear in the video, that their relationship was not one of abuse (physical or mental), except Manfred pushing his impossible expectations on Franziska
@@debastiansebeste I'm sorry if my comment upset you. I think I should have explained my point better. The impression I got that you implied that Manfred was an abusive father came from how many people in the AA fandom seem to think Manfred was a bad father to both Miles and Franziska, as well as a few other things: 1) how they interacted in this video vs how I interpreted their relationship from the games, since in the games it seemed to me that Franziska still loved her father, or at the very least respected him, even after everything he did (like when Franziska called his father a genius in the ending of JFA) and vice versa. While here they verbally (or, in Franziska's case at the end, physically) assault each other. At least, that is the impression I got (thought the fact that many people in AA fandom, including some people in your comment section, call Manfred a groomer and a psychopath, didn’t help either). 2) I always imagined that Franziska (and maybe even Miles) chose to strife for perfection not because Manfred pushed impossible expectations on them, but because they respected him and his intellect, unaware of how depraved he truly is. This is especially apparent in the anime adaptation, in the episode Turnabout Melodies, where Manfred is shown to be a good father to both of his protégés. (And yes, I know the anime is mostly non-canon, but still) 3) I always imagined this interaction to be different and less hostile, namely I imagined that Manfred would admit, albeit begrudgingly, that he was wrong. Not for falsifying evidence, threatening witnesses/defendants or anything like that, but for letting his anger on Edgeworts get the better of him. And he would ask Franziska not to repeat his mistakes. While this video (again, no offense) seemed to me like the repeat of Sebastian's (or, Eustace, as he's now called in the official localization) character arc, where Blaise actually was a shitty father. Again, I deeply apologize if I made you upset, because I can imagine that you put a lot of effort into you videos, and I recommend you to watch Wendy's video about Mafred.

Thank you for giving us proper closure and character development of Franziska in a way that Capcom officially never will.
I genuinely appreciate it.
Glad you do, mate. Thank you 😁
Franziska finally standing up against mvk with that custom sprite has got me fucked up man...

God, when she cries... Hits hard man.... Love all you videos! Looking forward to more!
Thanks mate, glad you like them 😁
I am here for Franziska's character development!
Franziska casually breaking her own black psyche locks of "My dad only used me for his own pursuits" after having a simple heart-to-heart with Manfred
don't use a mental illness as a description for a shitty person. that's a really fucked up thing to do, none of those are traits of npd, they're traits of being a bad person, just because someone's a bad person doesn't mean they're mentally ill
I can imagine a follow up to this video where Franziska tells Phoenix about doing some "redemption".
And yeah, never whip a spirit channels folks!
Yeah the downside is that Maya got whipped for being the medium
The good part is that at least Manfred also felt the whip xD
it would be absolutely amazing if he did a video on franziska giving phoenix the card from jfa (idk if he already made one)
To be fair, Phoenix and Edgeworth together brought him down

Much wasted potential on a possible friendship of the two there :/

Gosh I love this-- Franziska finally gets to tell off her father for being the sick and obsessed man that he was! (Of course the ending is great too pfpff)
Manfred getting what he actually deserved all along lol
Imma be honest, my first interaction with the Ace Attorney Universe was Felix White, the most legendary defense attorney of'em all. After, I went straight to the anime and honestly, it wasn't as bad as most ppl say. It further explained some things and answered some questions the games had left unanswered. But that theme... what the hell. I wish they had used a variation of that theme for him in the games, it fits him so well. And about the video itself... Manfred deserved that. Franziska went up a few ranks in my Ace Attorney character tier list because of what she did to her garbage father. This is part of my headcanon fr
Least thing that Manfred deserved. Always glad to help people add stuff to their headcanons 😁
And full agree, Felix White best attorney of all time xD
The anime wasn't as bad? Kill it with fire!!
@@George-iz2ce xD tbh the anime's first season that I've watched had some terribly animated moments and left crucial stuff out that I hated (such as Dee Vazquez's reason for treating Jack Hammer the way she did). I've heard it gets better at season 3 but I haven't got there yet.

Franziska Von Karma' did the right thing it's no easy task to stand up to your father but it had to be done I'm proud of her

The catharsis is fucking real.
Much needed catharsis that I hope we'll eventually see Franziska get in the mainline games too
Love the use of Manfred's anime theme
This Franziska feels so real ....
3:54. The father of the year.

(its canon)

@@debastiansebeste ok gotcha thx for honesty :P
Watching this reminded me of a picture of Maya channeling Gregory while Pearl channelled Von Karma. Extremely cursed.

In a lot of ways, it probably mirrors the "what if he didn't shoot anyone?"-what if without too many extras.(I guess Manfed probably has to be stealthier about his illegal methods tho because he just removed the guy who usually covered for him)

I do have an issue with this video, namely that it’s based on assumption that Manfred was an abusive father to Franziska, even though it's never explicitly stated in the games (and in the anime adaptation even contradicted in one episode).
More about that in this video by Wendy Rocket:
ruclips.net/video/QNfnWZ_-yjY/видео.htmlsi=DnEpa9fXXOy3l-M-
Makes me sad that this is what you got from the video, that I imply that Manfred was abusive to Franziska, because there's not a single intention of that. The way it's built, I hoped the video (especially with Franziska's last speech) makes it clear that Franziska has no issues about any "abuse" from Manfred towards her, but for 1) his actions towards others (like the Edgeworths), and 2) for making her live her life under the delusion of the "Von Karma perfection", when Manfred himself was the lowest of lows
After all, when confronted by Franziska, Manfred demands the respect he expects from his daughter (since she starts by acting hostile to him), and afterwards speaks to her with logical arguments. I thought that, at least, is clear in the video, that their relationship was not one of abuse (physical or mental), except Manfred pushing his impossible expectations on Franziska
@@debastiansebeste I'm sorry if my comment upset you. I think I should have explained my point better.
The impression I got that you implied that Manfred was an abusive father came from how many people in the AA fandom seem to think Manfred was a bad father to both Miles and Franziska, as well as a few other things:
1) how they interacted in this video vs how I interpreted their relationship from the games, since in the games it seemed to me that Franziska still loved her father, or at the very least respected him, even after everything he did (like when Franziska called his father a genius in the ending of JFA) and vice versa.
(And yes, I know the anime is mostly non-canon, but still)
3) I always imagined this interaction to be different and less hostile, namely I imagined that Manfred would admit, albeit begrudgingly, that he was wrong.

@@debastiansebesteOh most Definitely! both Franziska and Edgeworth have big unnecessary burdens put on them due to the Groomer that is Manfred: The Self-Obsessed Perfectionist but they are growing out of that thanks to Phoenix and in this great case Maya (not so much Apollo nor Athena though iirc sadly) Although i do wonder about Manfred's history of how he became such a corrupt husk of a man and how did he become a father in the first place? A lot to unpack there I tell ya and how far down in the family tree was like him in the first place
sorry to be nit picky, but at 6:30 Manfred's name goes to Franziska for a sec 😅
I had already noticed the mistake some 8-9 months ago, but good catch xD
The sprites are so clean and clear. Where did you get them?
Untitled Courtroom discord server, also all character codes are in my vid's description
