    Remember Avi knew what he was signing up for when he decided to stay with Ptx after winning the sing off. It’s not like they gave him a bunch of solo stuff and then limited him. Ptx deserves no blame for keeping him in a box. It was his role in the group. Avi just decided he needed more than being a bass singer and wanted to do a different style of music than Ptx did and does. I agree they’re both better off now.

      I agree. And Scott worked on his bass singing for them to be able to give Avi more room and give them more flexibility in arranging. But there is only so much a 20-ish Scott could do to cover that part for Avi. The simple truth is that Avi didn't sing bass because he wasn't spotlight worthy. He sang the bass because noone else could. Same reason Kevin rarely sings lead. Nowdays they've worked (and aged) in to having more switchable skills. So Matt can pick up a bit of basic beat boxing to give Kevin a moment, or Scott can pick up a bit of bass for Matt (and for Avi in the later years). But when they need the BEST, and not just someone holding the part down, they are going to use Avi/Kevin/Matt. People don't get mad at a band for not giving the drummer a guitar solo, even if the drummer might also be good at guitar. And with the pop/electro sound ptx always have said they were going for, a bass would always be more needed in the instrumental (where the bass usually is in that type of music) and not in the leads (that usually are more baritone and up in pop). I agree with you that Avi knew what he signed up for, and then life and he changed, and he changed his mind. Hardly the first person to change their job or life a bit.

      It's also like "whatever" to pretend that PTX has gone really far out of their way to give Matt more solos than they did for Avi, which people seem to pretend is the case.
      Matt's now been in Pentatonix almost as long as Avi was. Matt has sung ONE lead, Avi had SIX. And for solos in ensemble songs Avi had 29 to Matt's 38. And don't ever forget that Avi was extremely present in arrangements... it isn't like PTX was just doing something to him without his input and direction.

      I think saying he 'knew what he ws getting into' is a bit much. The band had existed for a barely a few months at that time and was still developing their style and skills. It could have gone differently than it ended up going.

      @@NilZed1 i meant it as he knew his role was the bass singer. As holding down the bass line for most songs. And then sometimes providing the bass harmony when the bass line wasn't needed and he was singing lyrics. He knew he was half of the rhythm section and he loved all the praise he got for it on the sing off. After so many years I guess he needed more. He could have easily done a side project like all the others have done if he wasn't being fulfilled completely. Seemed like he really wanted the spotlight and to be in full control. I just can't stand when people make it out to be ptx's fault that he left. They didn't change as a group. He changed as a member.

    I think Matt is perfect for PTX now. He fits the adventurous, experimental Mitch songs and the warm/silly/pop modern covers. Avi was perfect for the trial and error growth of a cappella into what it is now. Being "dad" to a herd of 19 year olds, as a kid himself. The stress of non stop traveling, his mom's illness and probably the beginning of his developing musical individuallity all converged. The decision was right for both groups. I'm sure the separation was hurtful and hard for all parties, but growth spurts hurt. Now we have amazing artists whose creativity is unconstrained. As someone commented, a cappella is a style not a religion! Get over the blinked idea that only one is best. Thanks Saucey for being frank,open and funny.

    I agree with your entire Avi rant. These kids were literally working non-stop for years after the sing off. Recording while on tour overseas, concerts, public & TV appearances, etc. all while writing and creating new music. I think in those early years they never turned down an opportunity to be heard. Personally I don’t think I could’ve sustained that kind of schedule and I totally get why Avi had to bow out for his own well-being. Will always love him and his beautiful voice and I’ll always love Matt for coming into fill some huge shoes and doing it with grace and staying true to who he is. He didn’t try to be Avi 2.0. There are things Matt brings to the table that Avi wouldn’t have been able to do and vice-versa but everyone’s goal was always to serve the music. This group is special for so many reasons. 🥰

  • @kenslaughter00
    @kenslaughter00 2 года назад +28

    Yes, Avi said he wanted to do that for the rest of his life. But in the PTXperience videos he lamented more than once about being gone and on the road all the time, and straight up complained that, "Days off used to be days off, but not now. We don't have days off anymore, we're recording or writing or arranging." That was the foreshadowing writing on the wall that Avi would be the first to leave the group.
    Really good singers and musicians are a dime a dozen. What sets the successful and famous ones apart isn't just the luck of getting their big break, it's being able to handle everything that comes with it. It's not only the sacrifices that Sarah Bareilles talked about on The Sing Off, it's missing family, it's no days off, it's living out of a suitcase and sleeping on a bus or a different hotel every night, it's being on-stage 24/7, it's a lifestyle that you can handle or you can't.
    Kirstie nearly washed out, you can see it in her early blog posts. She had a confidence problem, and it affected her health. But she figured it out and overcame.
    The notion that Avi and Scott butted heads or the group wanted to lock Avi in a Bass Box is just silly. None of those people have that kind of personality. You can see how true that it by watching the PTXperience and BTS videos.
    Avi started off as an opera singer, then made enough money with Pentatonix that allowed him to be a folk singer. It's a lifestyle that suits him better.

    Well, there are a few things to say. First of all and most important, Mitch's hair, lol: We have the exact same favorite looks, and we could both really do without the mustache, but I won't disrespect the stache considering whose face it's on, lol. I don't disagree with you about Avi, or about the relative better-offness of everyone involved, but there were options. If they were all locked into PTX, none of them would be completely fulfilled as artists, as amazing as it must be to be a part of that insane group producing the jaw-dropping music they create. That is why we have Superfruit, Scott's collabs, Messer, Kirstie's "Love," and Kevin's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Avi could have done his solo work, too. That being said, the pace he would have had to race at to do both things is counter to his wellbeing, so I believe he made the right choice. I have to believe it gives him a twinge seeing PTX continue without him, but in a nostalgic and what-if sort of way, like seeing an old flame, right? He definitely didn't hate being part of that group, he loved it. His soul needed something different, that is all. Leaving didn't hurt PTX, except emotionally. Matt's sound is lovely, if different, and fits in perfectly, plus he is a beautiful souled young man, like Avi, but in his own way. Not to disrespect the enormous contribution made by the bass even when they are not singing or soloing, but Avi leaving, as painful as it was, was not insurmountable. The sound of the group changed noticeably but they were still recognizable as PTX. Mitch, Kirstie, or Scott leaving would have changed the sound beyond recognition and Pentatonix would be something completely other than Pentatonix, that is just how the roles fall out. Kevin MIGHT be able to be replaced with another beatboxer, but he or she wouldn't be Kevin, just like Matt isn't Avi. It would be a concussive blow. I hope that never happens. They were lucky to find a beautiful souled artist to replace a beautiful souled artist. Kevin is musically the beating heart of PTX and his gorgeous energy, intelligence, creativity, and soul are integral, it's hard to imagine they could be so lucky a second time. A lot of people are capable of executing great technique, but Pentatonix runs just as much on heart energy that is uniquely theirs, because they are their own sincerely good and loving selves, as people and as individual artists. You can feel it in every song and performance. None of the six of them are replaceable at this point. None of them.

    Avi was tearfully grateful for his PTX exposure. He said it on the Sing Off that he wanted to be a part of their family for the rest of his life. He was totally into doing what he was doing with PTX. I don't think any PTX member kept Avi down, in a certain place. Once he became discontented with playing that role, he left when he should have. PTX is his roots. My taste doesn't care for Avi's genre of music. I appreciate what he is doing, but I don't really connect with it. I liked playful Avi, this genre of music he is doing just isn't fun loving for me. It kind of brings me down. I am a fan of uplifting music so it's not for me. I'm happy for him, though. I agree with everything you said. my only caveat would be that I don't believe that Avi was unhappy being a bass, since that's why he joined PTX. in fact in many clips, he just seems to be grooving and enjoying himself. neither PTX nor Avi would be where they are without the other and I think both parties recognize that. anyway, it's not as if anybody in PTX forced Avi to do anything and I think he left at the right time when he realized that he was no longer doing what made him happy. now both PTX and Avi are thriving and I'm happy for everyone. ❤️

    I agree with what you said about Avi and PTX. They both needed each other.
    My trepidation when he left was that the flavor he brought, with his classical background, would be lost. Example, things like the intro to "Aha" at the Star Vista. That was pure Avi.
    One of the early Matt things I heard was a live "Hallelujah", where he changed his solo part. I know he was trying to break out from under the Avi shadow, but I found it a little cringey.
    Since then, he has found his stride and is a great addition to the group....tho I still don't care for what he does to "Hallelujah".
    As I have said before, egos have no place in this group. They do what is best for a song. Scott wrote "Light in the Hallway" for his newborn nephew and insisted that Avi sing it.
    I am happy for Avi, I am happy for PTX and I am happy we have them both.

      I disagree, Vantreknerd. Not that everyone is better off, that's demonstratable. But, I disagree that anyone else in the group wasn't as replaceable as Avi was. Scott could have been replaced by BJC, Mitch could be replaced by Sam Tsui, Kirsty could be replaced by a number of very talented people, and the sound wouldn't have change all that much. The chemistry would've been different, but it was after Avi left, too. I'm not saying it wasn't the right decision all around for Avi to leave. I'm simply pointing out that he was no more, or less, replaceable than anyone else in the group.

      With his burnout and not being built for that tempo, his role and the style of music they do was probably part of his consideration. Not in a "I need the spotlight" way, more in the fact that he couldn't fill all of his creativity in the group (and being a bass would be part of that). The others do their own projects on the side to fulfill those parts but in Avis case he was stressed and stretched thin as it was, so adding his own passion projects on top of that was not doable.

    I believe that sometimes in this cosmic mess of a world that we have…things turn out as they should….The case of Avi/PTX is one of those rare occasions! Avi needed PTX and PTX needed Avi, it was a mutually beneficial
    arrangement that we ALL
    benefited from…it can arguably be said that they are each better off now…it’s hard for me to imagine
    PTX without Matt now, even as it is hard to imagine PTX never having had Avi!!!

    Agree that I'm glad Avi is happy, and that PTX is happy. I think Avi's current music is great, but as a musician, I think what he did with PTX is actually more complex than what he does now. It is harder to hold down a bass line, especially an acapella bass line, than it is to sing lead. I actually think Avi under-utilizes HIMSELF -as a vocaliist- now, as he rarely shows his -entire- range, or does the kind of octave skips we know he is capable of, because they are not necessary in the style of folkish music he prefers. He obviously instead is stretching his composing, lyric writing, and lead skills instead. No problem with that, but singing a bass line is not a box, it is -incredibly- difficult, and it is necessary. Like Kevin's beat boxing, it's not ptx keeping him there, it is intrinsic to the nature of doing music in parts itself.

      Yes! Thank you! Scott has mentioned a few times that doing the background is usually way more difficult than the solo. I think minimizing the roles as "less than" if they are not lead is doing all of them a disservice. As you said, Avi is expanding many creative things in his solo work, but minimizing his extremely impressive work as an a cappella bass is unnecessary.

      This is what I was trying to say in my own comment earlier. If you think doing the background singing is easy or boring, you need to try singing in a choir. I don’t usually try for solos, but I don’t see myself as less than people who do.

    my favorite mitch look is 1. mullet Mitch, the purple hair he had in the No (Meghan Trainor video), and the cut you mentioned he had in AHA Singapore. My least was the bald Mitch and yeah wasn't a fan of the mustache he had in Superfruit. Watching Avi in the old PTX videos is heartwarming and sad. He didn't leave Pentatonix to do a solo career, it just worked out that way. Being a part of PTX did give Avi the exposure he would need to go further. Without PTX we'd never have known how great he is, as a singer and as a person. The one song Light in the Hallway, love to listen to Avi sing.

    Nobody kept Avi in a box. He and Kevin were the master duo of arranging back in the day (along with Scott): Avi himself wrote/arranged many of those 'du-dumm' bass lines himself. People change, and he eventually outgrew that role, in addition to not being able to keep up the crazy schedule they had and have, especially after his mother's diagnosis. It's a good thing he's doing is own music now, many people enjoy it and he's clearly happier in his new lifestyle. I agree with you there. What actually annoys me about that particular clip is Mitch doing all those beautiful riffs and runs and the bloody camera showing everyone but him! I guess you missed those parts, talking about Avi.

    After seeing what folks like Geoff and Tim are capable of within their respective groups...I can see where Avi would be upset over the parts he was being given, what he was being asked to do within the group. That being said, WITHOUT PTX, and his time with them, I'm sorry to say, Avi is an unknown, local, folk artist doing festivals, the odd local bar, and events. A very GOOD local folk singer, but still...Without the international stage PTX provided him, the fanbase he gained from his time there...
    The reverse is true, too, though. Without Avi PTX isn't where they are today. They don't HAVE that international stage, that name recognition, that star power. So, the relationship was most certainly mutually beneficial.

    • @vickyterry3150
      @vickyterry3150 2 года назад +16

      I agree, except where you mentioned that he was "given" parts. I'm under the impression that Avi was instrumental (pardon the pun) in the arrangements. He would have known his role, even created it. But I can also see how he would be ready to move on. And the relationship was definitely mutually beneficial.

    • @sanoodilon4563

    • @Tark-qs4mu
      @Tark-qs4mu 2 года назад

      @@sanoodilon4563 I can't say that I necessarily agree, Sano. I would say they're playing the same game, on the same field, it's just that the field Home Free and Voice Play play on is...smaller. The songs they choose to arrange are just as ambitious, just as complex, have just as much attention to detail when it comes to arrangement. The voices, though different, are just as good. The videos that both Home Free and Voice Play do, though maybe not as cinematic, have just as much production value as PTX's, too.
      I agree that HF and VP are niche...but so, for that matter, is PTX, really. Each has their own lane, their own corner OF the niche, is all I meant to say, really.

    • @sanoodilon4563
      @sanoodilon4563 2 года назад

      @@Tark-qs4mu No you're totally right. I apologise i didn't develop my opinion. What i meant is:
      1. HomeFree's style is almost all country and folk. Where deep voices do great. VoicePlay is more theatrical where also deep voices do great (even though in my opinion VP play the Geoff card way too aften. It's not as surprising. We know the man can sing extremely low.)
      2. The megastar and niche comment i just wanted to say that PTX have a certain demand that Avi can't fill. Like for example Brian May Can sing very well. He could have been a lead singer in many smaller bands. But Queen wouldn't have been nearly as popular and famous if he was their lead singer. Avi has a perfect voice to be lead for more niche groups. But not one to lead for international superstars. Idk if it makes sense

    • @Tark-qs4mu
      @Tark-qs4mu 2 года назад +1

      @@sanoodilon4563 It made perfect sense. And I agree with you. For the type of music Avi does he has the perfect voice. He's soulful, which he always has been, He knows exactly which dynamics to use, and when. Though I don't know if I entirely agree he doesn't have the voice to lead an group of international superstars. Not so long as that stardom is with a niche group, anyway. He certainly has the presence for it. *sigh* Which, I guess, he picked up while he was with PTX, if we're being honest. When Avi first came to the group he was very shy. Kevin had to drag him out of his shell quite a bit, just as Avi had to drag Kevin's voice out into the open. Both things we should be thrilled about.
      Anyway, I think it was just a matter of semantics with you and I. We were saying the same things, just in different terms. And, neither of us were getting that, at first. Now we are, though. See what happens when good hoomans act like good hoomans and talk about things? Lol.

    My fave Mitch look is the emo swoop as well, I like it best when it was purple, but the natural colour is cool too, then the brief period in between Mullet Mitch where he had short hair (I think it was during the panini quarantini) with no tash . I agree that the task really does make him seem like a Freddie reincarnation.
    If you want more micless singing, there's a compilation video of them (with Matt) and some of it has then singing on stairs and it certainly appears it's just them and the recording device; the stairwell definitely working with them on the acoustics. That discussion about Avi in relation to PTX it’s somehow senseless to me. Avi start with PTX and together with them he grow up and found the way he want to go as an artist. He was doing that time there an amazing job. He had a big part on the success of PTX. He decide to be consequent and focused on his solo career. How know what would be happen to PTX if the members are even more successful as a Solist. I hope the best but Kirstie become a mother and this will change her priorities and also the possibilities to perform with PTX. Anyway right know is Matt the bass of the group and he do also an great job. He is in a lot of points different from Avi. And that’s good because this give also the chance to PTX to develop further. Avi is past in regards to PTX and I think that should be respected. Of course everyone is free to like what ever he want but I think it’s also a kind of unfair forward to Matt.

      I think in the Pentaparents video one of Matt’s relatives says Matt said ”I think that audition was for Pentatonix”, but that only confirms that he didn’t know for sure at that stage and Avi certainly was not involved.

    You are absolutely right about PTX and Avi. They both had to be together in the beginning to build their brand. Avi may end up being the Bob Dylan of this time with his music. Without PTX he does not have his later success. PTX got Matt who I think blends better with the other four members than Avi did. You can always pick out Avi in a PTX song. Matt is just as good but his smoother tone makes the blend better which makes the whole sound more uniform.

      Avi will never be Bob Dylan now. Come on🤣. i love him. God bless him. he has an incredible voice and his melodies are great. but God his lyrics don't do it for me. it's always 4 bars in a verse maximum and like 4 choruses that are way longer than all the verses combined. his themes are great but he can't develop them for shit

    I'm sure you figured it out already, but just in case.... that was a FLIP camera.

    Question for you: Is Mitch in a box? Yes, he gets lots of solos. But they almost invariably showcase his upper range, (Amazing Grace is a big exception.). His most recent Messer release has him singing a couple of octaves below his PTX usual, and some of the big Mitch fans are _very_ displeased. So is he being kept in a box in PTX? Just a thought I had after hearing "Leather." ANYWAY: All the Trio wear contacts or glasses. Mitch wore glasses pretty often even onscreen in the early days. Kirstin seems to switch off pretty often as well: in these later stages of her pregnancy, she's seen wearing them frequently unless she's out with Hausdo. I've seen Scott with them so seldom in recent years that I wonder if he's had Lasik.

    I agree with your first Mitch option but my second favorite is when they first were on the show. But any Mitch is great just like all the others. Perfectly them.

    My fave look is Mullet Mitch. I don't care for the 'stashe either. It makes him look exactly like his Dad. Somewhere in the Superfruit videos is a video of Mitch, Mitch's dad and Scott trying to teach Mitch's dad gay terminology. It shows just how like his dad he is.
