I have 2 of these controllers about 1 year old and the buttons on both are nearly unresponsive. I often have to press a button 20-30 times just to get it to respond. My battery indicator reports good batteries. Has anybody else experienced this and is there a fix for this?

Yep. Me too. The controller wouldn’t even turn on at first (I used the controller all last year until winter). I kept fiddling with the buttons and nothing. Then the off button worked but I couldn’t use the + button the change the timer. So frustrating!

I have the non-battery wall mounted ESP-6 and it's MUSHY and unresponsive.

@@littlehapagirl They were replaced under warrantee. Hope you can get it resolved.

Do you need a special valve for this ?

No but you will need a special solenoid , the part that has the wires attached to it. Your valve will need a DC latching solenoid which is easy to change out on existing valves.
