We have online teachers who bust their arse for $15/hour. They do a far better job. For higher education: average tenured prof makes $160k/year. They teach 6-8 a week only. Four months off for vacation, sabatacles (misspelled) and Benifits. Comes to over $800/hour for the couple hours they average teaching a week. Plus the cost of staying brick and mortar. We could save well over 95% on higher education.

Same here. So glad i don't teach anymore. It got worse and worse every year. Not just the kids but the administration and other teachers. Democrats are entrenched in public schools even in conservative Tennesssee. They make life hell for conservative teachers.

I'm not big on school choice. I worked hard to get my children into private school. A couple of years ago, our school opened its doors to several "public school" kids from low income areas on some donation/program. When these kids showed up, the school changed. There were fights, drugs, assaults, bullying, and disrespect. Their parents were just as bad. Needless to say, after a year, they were sent back. No thanks. These kids lack good parents. Good kids should not have to suffer for it.

this can run into a real problem when you continue this 2 speed life system where *most* will continue diverging. You do not live in a village with all of your generational family and sustainability. The capacity to get along to get along is essential, and what is increasingly occurring is an ideological wealth driven divide that begins to look very much like feudalism - the nobility.... and the serfs. The more this gets wedged the more likely discontent and the wider the genuine divide. A collective National direction or ethos of some fundamental sort is needed .... when individuals are not living by the same fundamental values capacity to see likeness, respect, trust all diminishes. They dont need the same words, but they do need common ground and understanding. The rush to turn us into a global labour pool has severely harmed national culture, ideals, value systems which are the most crucial underpinnings of society and begin in parenting and schools.

When I was teaching, I never strove to establish equality in my classroom. The only thing equal was opportunity. Everyone had an opportunity to shine in one way or another.
This philosophy leaves no one behind, because every child is gifted in some realm.
    ~ ~ ~
The job of a teacher is not to make educational outcomes equal, but to point every child in a direction where he or she might achieve greatness.

Definitions are important and language is often fiendishly unclear. I like what you wrote and think this falls to the question of what you are teaching - a subject? a set of knowledge? how to learn? How to understand how you yourself learn? What success looks like for each "stake holder" from the school, district/gov, student and parent matters of course. I think much of what you describe is mentoring... the directing and instilling of wisdom which guides an individual in how they apply themself to the challenges in their life. Education more broadly is the instilling of knowledge ... within a system that frequently forgets effectiveness long term vs point assessment (the discussion of capability based training). The balance of engraved knowledge necessary to function in society and recognition of where individual talent/exceptionalism or identity opens the way to "gifted" levels of not only capability but intention or interest in exercising capability in fruitful ways.

School choice is the way to go in every state. The performance levels of our K-12 students in public schools are simply not acceptable. The U.S. should be in the top ten in the world in math, science, reading comprehension, etc..., and we're nowhere near that. Collectively, teacher unions, public-school boards, administrators and teachers have had decades to produce better outcomes and, while there are pockets of success, on the whole, they have failed. No one should listen to anything they have to say about how to fix our education system. Clearly, they do not have the answers. The kids and this nation deserve much, much better than the status quo.

    • @michaelrobinson9643

be cautious using competition on didactic learning metrics as comparators for "success". If the success you want is socially dysfunctional, suicidal and emotionally stunted... then comparison to some of the Asian metrics may be just fine to you. Life is more than business, employment, job.... it's meant to be about life, family, and renewal not being a cog in a machine climbing a hill. This becomes more complex in a non-village world of complex inter-related systems designed not for humanity but for profit - strung together by the notion that everyone is winning a bit. THe pursuit of efficiency to improve rate of uplift (for the upper echelons) is really benefited in simplistic terms by converting all others into productivity resources. The humanistic factor of birth-renewal-death as an intwined family cycle is being lost in this. It may be because we have outpaced our own wisdom with technology that is degrading our connectedness as people instead of improving it.

Don't accept government money for your kids education! "School choice" is not what you think it is, your "choices" will go down the drain when you accept anything from the government. Every state already has actual school choice, the freedom to do your kids education however you want, you just have to pay for it yourself, and it needs to stay that way if you want freedom to teach your kids!

What the government funds, the government runs. "School choice" sounds great on paper but gov money will come with strings. If you're willing to allow government to tell you what to do with the funds, then there's no point in removing your kids from government schools in the first place. Say NO to "school choice" or whatever other titles they give it.

They have as much right as anybody to go to private. My state just passed USC this yr. Up to 7k per kid yearly towards the private school of your choice, tuition, transfer fees & other expenses. And 2k yearly for each homeschooler.

We switched to a different district after my daughter’s first full year back after they got back from Covid. The teacher didn’t care at all. My daughter was really struggling to stay caught up and I begged this teacher to send home extra work that I could do with her at home.. the teacher would say, “thank you.” My daughter was falling apart from stress and this lady said thank you. Administration totally had her back too. They didn’t care at all. They said they had a counselor if my daughter was stressed… we don’t want one of your counselors, we need you to teach! Don’t even get me started on how the staff speaks to the children there, I was appalled. If you are burnt out and don’t want to be there then leave, we don’t want you there either! We went to a smaller school the next year and they worked so hard to get her to her grade level. My daughter put all the work in and now she flies through her homework. We have to reapply every year to this district so it’s nerve wracking that she won’t get in and applying for my son before he goes into that trouble school next year.

Allowing unlimited schools can lead to over dilution of limited resources. Beware creating a completely distributed system with loss of curriculum control.
Too many schools can mean in some situations that you do not have sufficient people of quality in the field needed, and with capacity to teach. This has been most obvious in schools for things like medicine and dentistry... but in Australia we also have a teacher shortage and struggle to incentivise good teachers to move to rural schools etc. Certainly we have less than the necessary number of men to teach young men and women - a solid evidence based problem that is screwing our children on several metrics (especially in a world where single parenting is on the rise).

School boards, superintendents, parents & students move through the system. The teachers are the only constant.
