I was also born in 55, most of my HS teachers fought in WW2, some talked about it, some did’t. Later those that didn’t fight in WW2 went to Vietnam. I grew up & joined the AF, for 20. I served in some campaigns & Desert Shield/Storm.

I can emphatise with the comments. I was 9 years old in 1963 and simply adored the series. Now as a 66 I see why I was so taken with it. Combat is simply the best war series ever made. It is also a very insightful study of men at war and civilians caught in between. The character studies are brilliant. Great acting, and profound screenplay writing define this in-depth depiction of a sadly lost narrative in which America showed its greatness. I am Irish living in the Republic of Ireland. And yes we had this outstanding series on our TV screens in the 1960's here Very sad to reflect on the tragic fate of Vic Morrow. And the fact that most of these unforgettable actors are now no longer with us. But they live on in our minds and hearts.

I like the Rick Jason episodes. (In particular.)
Vic Morrow is awesome, of course, but it's nice to spend more time with Jason sometimes, as well. (I mean, he IS credited at the opening of the show right along with Morrow as well anyway lol so, it's only appropriate to expect an episode every so often centered around Rick Jason, more primarily.)

There are repeated scenes with German tanks and armor in a giant traffic jam that are actual photos of German troops invading France but stalled in a traffic jam for days. The French general refused to believe reports and figured Germany would not attack so far North but would attack the main French defense line. Despite France having the largest modern air force, 70% of planes were not immediately ready to attack. Other scenes showing German motor units driving up hills are repeated. The mix of war film and Hollywood film is interesting.

Peter Whitney, not yet big enough for "guest star" billing as of this 1963 air date but what a great character actor. He had been on "The Rifleman" six or so times and takes on whatever persona you ask for...hero, coward, dumber than a brick hillbilly etc. Great job.

I really love these shows along with " Have Gun Will Travel " , " The Untouchables " with Robert Stack . They remind me of better times maybe not for the country but for myself . watching these that were brand new , at that time , having a friend or two playing with a box of soldiers and sometimes with my Lionel train , capturing the station , pretending to blow the bridge or tunnel .
I'm thankful to whom ever found and posted these .
But for the person ( S ) who just can't leave a good thing alone and has to tell everybody the entire show bolw by blow and tries to ruin a good time , I say this to you ,

One of the best TV shows ever. They tried for authenticity with the German's speaking in German and the French speaking in French. That was the best part of it. Unfortunatley, this, and other episodes, show them fighting in mountains. There were no mountains anywhere near Normandy or the rest of the area of France they moved through. Sadly the series jumped the shark when it went color. It woke you up to the fact that it was all filmed in California and looked nothing like that area of France.

I always thought the same way, make Caje a corporal and asst squad leader, give the BAR to Littlejohn, who would be a PFC, and make Kirby his ammo bearer (which wore a similar magazine belt to the BAR Gunner, but without the Walking Fire brace riveted to the belt). The belt had six pockets and held 12 BAR magazines, making their basic combat load a total of 500 rounds of .30-06 including the magazine in the BAR. Extra loaded mags and boxed or belted (or even bandos of clipped) .30-06 ammo would have been in both their rucks.
Then again Kirby was more of a maniac than any of the others, and he was really infatuated with the BAR, so...

Popularity rises and sinks and rises again. Season 5 was aired in 1966-67, a year after the Tet offensive in Viet Nam. The country was getting sick of war. The U.S. was on the brink of the disastrous year of 1968. Everything has its time, and its end.

I heard at the time that because The Vietnam War was ramping up and the start of body bags were coming home. The timing of the discontinued series dove tails this 1966.

Don't know. I used to love the swivel handle on my M60 though. Carried it in Korea for a year or so until I got promoted. Then I got to carry an M3 grease gun. Only place I saw them and I was in the Army 23 years. The 1SG was always asking "who wants to go to the range today?". I always volunteered my section. 11 men and I'd take a few from motor maintenance so we could borrow their 50 cal. No restrictions, just me and guys cutting loose at the range. We even got to shoot our M203 grenade launchers from the M16's. My soldier's loved me. Who wouldn't want a day to screw off at the range and sling lead? Beat the monotony of alerts and other crap. I was with 2nd Infantry Division Artillery in Korea from 82 - 85 on a one year tour. Met my wife 😎

Dave C They were finicky at best. Obstructions and weather limited them. Three miles with the hand held and ten maybe a little more with the 35 pound backpack radio set. That is why direct line ground cable was preferred but cables could be cut.
