I'm very interested in watching movies being made! It's a lot of work that people have viewed in a couple of hours! you can show the analysis of the script! As you plan! How you draw everything! live conversations when you sit together and discuss how everything will go!
We're just starting out. Trying to find good people for crew, and me transitioning from stills and producing machinima. It was good to see how the sausage is made. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for this video! I enjoyed seeing everything, from the prep (and last minute panic) through to the shoot itself. It's really inspiring stuff. Subscribed 😊
Great stuff Nick. What's your director's monitor set up? Does the raw footage in camera reflects the same color when transmitted to the monitor using the REC709 lut?
In this video you're seeing a literal 27" computer monitor sitting on the cart. The one the 1st AC is pulling focus off is the usual one we carry around. It's a Small HD 702 Bright monitor (I've had it for years). Signal gets from the camera to the monitor via a Teredek Bolt 750 LT. If you're going to be pulling focus off it, you need the zero latency of the Teredek, if you're just going to be viewing, any wireless system will do. Both of those are housed in the Wooden Camera Director's Cage v3, and powered with a gold mount battery. There are several options for viewing LUTs. We could send a LUT loaded into the camera out the SDI to the wireless transmitter, or just a LOG image. The SmallHD can also house LUTs to cycle through that can be sent out it's HDMI or SDI out. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Hi, i dont know who is the steadicam operator but someone tell he that his arm is not properlly tuned! the tension of the two sections of the arm are diferent! and one of them are supporting all the rig weight!
For a short film you have some nice equipment. Do you rent your camera, or do you own it. I try to buy what I can, but it sure adds up. I like the tripod you use.
I run a commercial production company, so we own the kit. The closest rental house is about an hour and a half away, so it makes more sense for most projects to bring my own kit. I've slowly built up the kit over 5+ years. Gear isn't the thing that will make or break a project - your creativity and execution will.
Sennheiser mkh50. Another similar style of mic at around half the price that I commonly see recommended is the Audio Technica 4053b. Curtis Judd has several videos comparing these indoor dialogue mics.
Actual budget vs what the budget could/should/would have been are massively different on this project. We didn't have to rent any gear since my production company provided it. We called in favors from the filmmaking homies - we've been working on each other's stuff for years. In the end we paid the actors, the location, crafty and meals, 3 Airbnb's for the actors, hard drive space, and a few costume and production design odds and ends. The out of pocket amount was between $1-2k. This is how we've "hacked" making stuff for a lot less than it should cost over the years.
Wow that's amazing. Well, great job as producer. I know that was a hell of a feat. I ran into a similar situation with actors not showing at the last minute and that drove me crazy and I had no one else to call.@@NickHouchin
The stress on that focus puller in the intro is real. My wife pulls focus for me and after a difficult take she’s literally sweating.
As a person who likes learning and growing in the DP works this video has great pointers that one can learn from thank you Nick
I love how you captured this, we were literally with you!

Yes agree. I've built up and I'm still buying. I've worked in the film industry, and I try to use all my contacts to get gear. @@NickHouchin
Ayee Eau Claire!
Home sweet home.
Great video, What camera did you use for BTS, and where can I watch the short film?
Sony a7siii with the Tamron 28-75. We shot about 2 weeks ago, so the short is still in post-production.
Did you use a black promist for any shots of the project?
I didn't. Just the contax zeiss glass.
What boom mic is that ? I been looking for it

Where are you guys based out of?
IG says Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the land of Bon Iver.
Am in film school and I need tripod, camera
What Steadicam Model is that?
The Zephyr.
I'm starting to think that this guy knows what he's talking about...
Where can I watch the short film?
This was shot about 2 weeks ago, so the short is still in post.
