Their style in this video is what is known in Japan as "Visual Kei". They're a massively influentual band, even to this day. I'm so glad your reacting to their songs.
X japan is one the founders of the visual kei scene over there in japan and Rip to their guitarist Hide (Hide is the guitarist with the big hair) Hide also had a two solo bands Hide with spread beaver which was his Japanese solo band and he had a English band called Zilch which was completely different from X japan but I suggest checking out this song from X japan Drain
Well well... X-Japan is the foundation of almost all the modern rock and metal y Japan. In EEUU music change from melodic singers and big bands like the ones with Sinatra or Dean Martin to the first rock like Elvis or Chuck Berry. UK have the Beatles and the Stones. Japan have... X-Japan From the time they starts, inspired by bands like KISS and the estetic of others like David Bowie Japan was still musically speaking in the 50 playing music like those bands and those 50 singers or playing Enka. X-Japan was not the first one, and of course was not the only but was the most popular and the best of all. They sell more than 50 millions records. The founder of the Band: Yoshiki (drums player) starts learning piano at the age of 4. Both of their parents were musicians, their classical background is huge. Just imagine the popularity of this band in Japan than Yoshiki was asked by the Japanese goverment to compose a simphonic suite for the Emperor in the 10 anniversary of their enthronement. Technically they are still active. Not one of the guitars (pink hair) and bass player because both died years ago, but they now do only a few things. If someday you see their "Last Live" before they disband in 1997 you must be astonished of the really HUGE public. They fill all the Tokyo Dome.
X Japan is my favorite band. I've driven 15 hours to NYC twice to see them, and flew to London to see them. This and "Say Anything" were the songs that got me into this band. I had heard of them before, but one night I finally went crawling around RUclips for their videos. The music videos seem to be gone from RUclips. If I ever plug my old heard drive into my new computer, I think I saved a few of them.
I’m a year late to your party, but if you read this, if you get the opportunity, I recommend you watch We Are X. It’s a documentary about the band and all the struggles they’ve endured and the success they’ve gained. They were the first of their kind for a long while. True pioneers in the metal scene in Japan.
