- Been thinking about a hypothetical Hamato family intergenerational cycle of neglect o.o
BEFORE yall get mad at me for the last bit, because I know you all like to say splinter was a great dad, he really... wasn't. BUT he does get better throughout the series and I love that. This man was depressed and traumatized and he didn't really start to recover until his children were in their teens so of course it affected how they were raised. anyway. I just think he was really well written and often overlooked
Media is Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [2018]
Characters are Hamato Yoshi/Lou Jitsu/Splinter and Hamato Donatello [with appearances from Hamato Sho, Hamato Atsuki, and Big Mama]
Song is Equation from The Little Prince soundtrack
btw THANK YOU for 1k subs ❤️❤️

Omg this is such a beautiful animatic that showcases how much Spilter’s past, trauma and neglect affected how he raised his sons- amazing work😭💙💙 the last scene hit hard, and it makes so much sense on why Donnie would be so excited to see his father be proud of him and his accomplishments in the show
Thank you!!
generational trauma hits hard
It's very true, Splinter was an awful father. He had no idea how to be one. It was pretty clear that his grandfather who raised him was distant, with no interest in his passion for acting and only in making Yoshi fulfill the Hamato destiny. I think because of this Splint fell the other way- instead of overbearing like his grandfather, he became distant so that he wouldn't have to make choices for his sons. And we see how this affects Donnie and Raph the most. Raph, because he essentially had to play the surrogate father to his brothers growing up. He matured too fast and never really got the chance to be a kid. Donnie is naturally more emotionally unavailable, so it's hard for him to reach out. When he does reach out to Splinter, he's only shunned and pushed away. His brain connects this to me "affection=not for Donnie" and "father=distant/critical". We see the affects this subconscious thinking has had on Donnie when it comes to his interactions with Shelldon. He starts out naturally very critical and aloof towards Shelldon's feelings, but also very critical to his mistakes and overbearing. When Mikey points out the similarities between Donnie's relationship to Splinter with Shelldon's relationship to Donnie, Donnie starts to make a conscious effort to reach out to Shelldon by making offhanded praising comments rather than purely critical statements.
Also, don't forget how he tried to show Shelldon that purple dragons were using him, how worried he was and how they hugged, it was such a good scene, God
Yeah Splints had his problems raising his kids that's for sure. It seems he definitely got better more towards the show cuz by the end of season one I'd call him a good dad. In the first few episodes though he's uh, yeah he's just a dad. Not good not bad. Not always available but still there. Gave em food and shelter so y'know, I'd say that still constitutes the "just a dad" thing a bit. He wasn't overtly abusive ever I wouldn't think. But emotional neglect was very much a thing.
Donnie didn’t want to become like his father
DUDE I AGREE WITH YOU ON HIM BEING A REALLY WELL WRITTEN CHARACTER
Unpopular opinion but this is my favorite Splinter. The way he reacted to suddenly becoming a monster who has to hide in the sewers is understandable and realistic. Not only does the way the writers handled his reaction to being turned into a mutant rat add more to his character BUT it aLSO adds depth to the turtles. Like how Raph feels like he has to take care of everybody and keep them safe due to him being the eldest, which he probably had to do a lot when he was younger in order to make up for Splinters absence. How Leo and Donnie both crave affirmation and how Mikey has to be there for everyone emotionally because as kids (and sometimes now) they didn't have that parental figure for comfort. I could go into more detail and ramble about how it affected all of them for days but THATS NOT IMPORTANT wHATS IMPOrTANT IS THAT I LOVE THIS SHOW AND ITS CHARACTERS ARE AMAZING. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS- ITS REALLY GOOD YOU'RE REALLY TALENTED PLEASE NEVER STOP OK BYE
Yesss. And I love the not-so-little detail of having every turtle explicitly say that they have some famous person as their father figure. There's an episode for each one of them, and I love how they LITERALLY say "my parental/father figure", I just love them so much omg I love the writing. I'm so sad the producers couldn't make longer episodes to be able to fully show their arcs in each one of them, but at least they're there, even if they end up being solved faster than I'd like to.
Anyway, that's what fanfics are for I guess, to be able to do what the original material couldn't. I still have a few episodes left, but I'm super excited to finish them and fully be part of the fandom.
YES. I love how you explained Splinter's character in the desc. He wasn't a good parent, definitely not. Was he a good person? yes, did he solve multiple crimes? yeah, did he go through many traumatic experiences? yes, most of which at the same time. But that doesn't mean he was a good father. He took so little care of his own mental health that it affected his sons'; and he seems to only start acknowledging that as the show progresses. He improves throughout the series though. Does he become a good father? Not completely, but he does get better. I deeply respect Splinter as a person for his many good actions, for fighting villains and for going through so many things and still keeping the responsibility of raising 4 kids; but I still think he's a bad father.
Exactly!! Hes got a long way to go but he is getting better
@@Rudymentary precisely why we need a third season
@@the_unholynjh3513 yesssssssssssssssssss
i love those fics and things of splinter being a good father but yeah, he was neglectful at best, abusive at worst.
plus in general only showing attention to your kids when you wanted to show them how to beat things up? kinda relates violence to love/affection/bonding which can get dicey real quick depending
I don’t know why but Donnie’s little toothy smile is just SO FRICKEN CUTE OMGGGG
YAAAAAAAAAA A ROTTMNT ANIMATIC LETS GOO!1!1!1!11!!!! this is so good holy christ,,, i adore how you portrayed splinter here and his relationship with his family. and how his trauma + horrible mental health not only affects him but his children as well, showcasing his neglect and how it begins to shape donnie as well. super heartbreaking, especially how you acknowledged the cycle in the family. U NEVER MISS DUDE!!1!1!!!11!!!! LOVE UR STUGF
TYYYYYYYYYSM dude i love this show so much
This is amazing! I love how you illustrated Splinter's life and the Donnie part HURT! A great way to show generational trauma
Thank you for the beautifully drawn one minute and thirty eight second long emotional kick in the throat, little Donnie is adorable
Gosh I love this so much 💞 little Donnie looked so happy but then immediately was disappointed 😔💔
I love all the little details in this! Like Donnie's glasses being taped to his head cause... you know... no ears.
One thing I love about rottmnt is the character designs they can tell so much with so little this can be seen when the whole family is together Raph towers over the group and splinter is tiny this shows the shift in roles compared to previous iterations where Raph is now the one they go to for help and splinter is mostly brought up as a last resort his smaller size also gives off the impression that he is has the most growing to do there are other things but this comment is large enough
P.s. you know it's a good video when nearly every comment is a paragraph
Heartbreaking but so true, it can be hard to admit a character we like has such a deep flaw-- the boys in-universe rarely even do! But it's important to not gloss over it even if it's painful. Good work!!
that was a swift kick in the feels, I love this interperation! Your style and music choice where amazing! Keep up the great work, and thank you for being real. Splinter WASN'T a good dad when the turtles where younger, thats a huge part of the show some fans gloss over. It's not that he is a bad person, but his actions had a negative affect on his kids, again great work!
NOW HOW COULD YOU DO THIS!? I AM EXTREMELY HEART BROKEN. HOW COULD YOU!?😭😭😭😭😭
The transitions in this are so smooth and magical, I don’t know how you do it. And this whole thing is just….heart wrenching and makes me wanna sob 🥺
WUOIVIFBEJN HOW DARE YOU IGNORE DONNIE LOOK YOU MADE HIM S A D (This was super good)
WOW!! Hearing a song from the little prince caught me off gaurd. But AGH thiz iz such a good way of presenting the generational trauma within the family!!
U physically hurt me with thiz power/pos
>:3
:0!!!!! ROTTMNT !!!! Your style shines here!! :D super beautifully made!! ^-^
thank you sm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nooo baby Donnie!!!! 🥺🥺🥺 Poor thing just wanted to show off his new invention & get his dads approval 😢😢😢 I know Splinter’s going through a depression moment and I know he’s not being mean on purpose. But this is still so sad. Also I love how you drew Donnie’s facial expressions, so cute (◕◡◕✿) 🥰
Respectfully I do still find him to be good as a dad with his flaws, as the brothers never doubted being loved by him, and the sheer acknowledgment of his own mistakes etc. Not the best for sure, some trauma had stuck him in the past. And he sure would change some things if he could have another chance, but damn what I wouldn't give for a dad who apologizes lmao. I really might be speaking with my own experience but I digress.
It's nuanced writing and everyone having their own take on it is good, even where people don't agree due to their own interpretations or experiences. Lovely animatic. ♥️
….I feel bad for past dad but that is no excuse to have completely ignored my excitement for that invention. I had worked really hard on that thing.
Me: * sees thumbnail without reading title * oh hey it’s Donnie!!! * clicks *
* lil hamato yoshi crying from that bit with his mom leaving *
Me: * crying rise ptsd * nuuuuuuuu talented art making me cryyyyyyy
This whole animatic is beautiful and I really like donnies sharp teeth
Y’all this is why Donnie is always trying to solve everything with his inventions he just wants love and appreciation for what he does! 😭❤️
This is completely and utterly heartbreaking and I love it!!

I love this animatic and I love the little detail with the tape on where the ears would be to hold up the glasses cuz the turtles ain’t got ears.
I love when people explain why Splinter is neglectful but never depict it as ok

You know when in that one episode when all the turtles go to big mamas hotel and doni states that he is trying the get praise from and adult or something like that, well this video kinda supports why doni feels like this

I saw this on tiktok, I was so sad :(
The ending is genuinely fucking heartbreaking. The whole animatic is, in truth, but that scene, just... Ugh. I felt it... Kudos.
Edit: Rewatched it and cried. Wow. I'm crying over a fictional rat man and his turtle son. How did we get here?
