It’s a very unique sound that’s warm like a ribbon with the detail of a condenser. Not going to work for everyone in every situation but pretty rad sounding and unique.
I used their much less expensive JZ J1 mic for a little while. $269, Same body, but in grey, with a bit more of a neutral character. That might be up your alley! ruclips.net/video/AXsyzrLSYXM/видео.html
So, we own a few JZ mics, including this one. JZ mics is basically Violet Design Microphones and the original manufacturer of Blue Microphones before they started to suck unless you were spending thousands. For everyone saying it's expensive, JZ has sales a few times a year where they have 50% off in a lot of products. From their collection, the V11, The Amethist and the other Vintages (V67, V47) all have a very vintage-y, warm sound, but always very detailed. The Amethist is especially beautiful, and I think it's more of an all rounder than the classical inspired models. For a more modern, open sound, someone said in the comments that the BH2 is their go-to mic and although I do agree I don't think it's as flattering on everyone like the Amethist is. The Amethist is STUPIDLY sensitive so please be aware that your room should be impeccable in order for it to shine. JZ also had a cheaper mic (the J1) that sometimes you can still find on ebay or new in some shops. I never had confirmation of this but I belive its similar to the Violet Design Black Knight in sound character, as JZ doesn't make that many capsules and data seems similar. In my experience honestly you cannot really go wrong with something from JZ. Also, check out Miktek. They don't get a lot of attention but the c1 is incredible bang for buck.
Loved the sound for your voice. I may have to get a NT1 though. It is priced so nice! I loved the transparency of the TLM 102. It seemed like that is what you would sound like if we were sitting in the same room. And that Austrian Audio?? Jeeezus Horatio that is a great mic!
Perfect for you... Fills in the low mids nicely on your voice but without the boominess of the SM7B. Extremely detailed top without that tiny dollop of overhyped harshness on the SM7. It is kind of ribbon like in the mids. Perfect mic for higher, thinner, but not overly sibilant voices. Too bad about the funky shape... Definitely my pick of the bunch you tested on your voice. Really liked it on the acoustic too.
lmao this comment is so sweet in hindsight. curtis later uploaded a video, calling the jz v11 his favorite mic, and this video right here probably made him aware of the mic in the first place. love you curtis!
Yes! I'm always looking forward to a new video from you, You are the best and very entertaining. There are two microphones I hope you will get to try:”Microtech Gefell m930” the smallest large diaphragm microphone that I know of (and a relative of Neumann) comparable to Tlm103 , And the Sennheiser E 965 - a large diagram handheld live mice with two settings for narrow or Broad sensitivity.
My W keys are sad. I must be elite gamer. Nice Latvian mic. Hecking expensive, but i like how it sounds on your voice. Though let's get to the important part... great video, my sir!
Thank you for this great review and comparison, it was really helpful in selecting a new microphone. Personally, I found the Austrian Audio the best sounding mic of all the mics in the comparison, but it was outside my budget so I got the JZ V11 instead. This mic replaces my (defective) Antelope Audio Edge Solo mic and it sounds so much better and quieter. Absolutely loving it.
Wow, I think that's my new favorite mic you've reviewed. Sounded perfect on everything. Not the best looking mic though... Looks like a deodorant stick, lol.
Your shoot out clinched it for me. I just ordered it. I have a very sibilant voice for vo work. I currently use the Warm Audio W47 (a great mic) but it's a little too thick in the low mids for my voice. Many thanks!
Seriously you sound great on the Stellar X2 Vintage. Given that it's only $250 as opposed to $800 for the JZ microphone - I actually felt they sound extremely similar. They both sound good. But pretty impressed by the Stellar X2 Vintage. I personally didn't like the non-vintage Stellar X2 (returned it) but the Vintage Stellar X2 sounds fantastic on your voice.
Totally agree, I always get excited to see Bandrew compare mics to the X2 Vintage because to me it was totally made for his voice. Haven't heard anything quite as impressive yet (although they are all fairly flattering).
I wish you and mike from Booth Junkie would do a live stream and talk about microphones and setup's for people to see your both likes and dislikes would be awesome or even a weekly podcast show together.
Dear Bandrew, nice Video als always. But, I think Microphone over 100$ is hard to compare on a youtube video. The divergence are so small that I can not hear any big divergence on the competitors. Would be nice if you test some low-budget Mics < 100$ ore better < 50$ agn. I am sure with low expensive Mic tests you will reach more viewers. Best Regards from Bavaria Martin
if you really need a shock mount for this mic you could use the shock mount for the Blue Yeti and attach the JZ V11s provided mount to it (as the Yeti's shock mount uses a standard 3/8th in screwey bit, and if im wrong just get an adapter) its not a perfect solution but ive seen it done for the beyerdynamic FOX mic and it did its job fairly well. if the vibration rejection killed the mics usefulness for anyone.
I've owned the V11 ever since they were released and think it is a great mic. It definitely has a ribbon like character to its sound whilst still having great detail. I also have the Shure KSM32 and had the Neumann TLM102 and Rode NT1 (black version). The Shure a great mic but I personally found it lacked a little in detail compared to the V11. The KSM32 top end is the darkest sounding mic I own and find I don't really use it with the V11 here. I find the V11 captures a lot of detail but never sounds harsh or sibilant. The Neumann TLM102 is a good mic but I found the highs can sound a little harsh on some vocalists. I also found I needed to use a de-esser on some vocalists but didn't need one using the V11 in some a/b comparisons I recorded. The Rode NT1 I had also started to sound harsh on some vocalists I tried it on. Also mine had higher self noise than the V11 despite claiming a lower self noise of 4dBA vs 6.5dBA with the V11. I'm looking for a slightly more open and airy sounding mic similar to the V11 and the JZ V67 and JZ Amethyst are on my list to audition along with mics by Roswell and the Vanguard V4.
Good fwi. Have you ever tried the discontinued Blue Cactus? I’m in a similar predicament where I am torn between purchasing a ribbon vs. a darker condenser.
@@azarlane9553 No I haven't tried this mic. The Shure KSM32 is slightly darker than the JZ V11. I'm also interested in hearing the Roswell Mini K87 and Delphos II which are regarded as dark mics. Also, the Warm WA47jnr is regarded as being a darker mic.
@@azarlane9553 Yes I had one and it's a very good mic. I had it modded as well which improved it further. I actually preferred the JZ V11 a little to the MK-319 but they were very similar.
@@richardpenrose1968 I wouldn’t have modded it myself. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. I do not like the modern, bright mics, at all anymore. I only like dark and/or neutral mics now. I’m getting to the point where all I want is RIBBON! But they are pricey and delicate. I’m looking for a decent ribbon and initially looked at the sE xr1 but to me it too sounds more like a condenser. Now looking also at the lesser known Italo-Chinese Eikon/Proel Rm8, which is an inexpensive ribbon with a pad and attenuation switch which most inexpensive ribbons don’t have. Also the Monoprice Stage Right LR100. Hard to find decent reviews that aren’t sponsored by corporate. Know what I mean?
This the first time that I've noticed the new timestamps feature along the progress bar. Sounded like a nice mic and great tone too, all that is needed now is a shock mount for it - their own design & manufacture or get someone else to do it for them. That is the only flaw for me.
I guess the V11 isn't really trying to emulate any particular mic, but I think there's a general Neumann vibe about it. Gee, it's been out for almost a decade now and I'm hearing it for the first time here in the future. It's definitely a winner, but the mid-price condenser segment has some fierce competition. I do enjoy the bass bump, though I can see having to do a lot of high-pass filtering on recorded tracks. Thanks for the demo.
It sounded a little but dark for spoken word, but for singing it really did an amazing job! Clear, detailed and natural sound with no cheap sibilance or harshness at all.
Sigh,,, TLM 102 is a dream to have... I am using the RODE NT-1 tho such an awesome mic. Got it cause you recommended it btw and cause it was the best overall mic in for instruments, voice for that price range. Thank you!
I have this mic and I love the "caramel" tones it adds to my voice - smooth and rich. And despite that, the high ends are still bright and crisp. But Bandrew is absolutely correct - it is susceptible to plosives and the included shock mount is worthless. Finding a good pop filter was difficult. I give it an 8/10.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with this Mark. This real world feedback is what is going to help the next person who is researching this and going through the comments, so I really appreciate it. I hope you have a great weekend.
Love your videos, started out looking for a review on the Rode Podmic and since I have watched so many of your videos. In the end I will probably end up getting a Rode Procaster paired with a TC-Helicon goXLR Mini, since I think that will suit my use case really well, I'm a twitch streamer on a dual pc stream setup and the Go XLR will make my life so much easier when it comes to routing the audio between my pcs. What do you think? Have you tried the GoXLR (yes I'm lazy I haven't searched the channel)? I've heard / read they have really good Midas pre-amps that even handles mics like Shure SM7B without any in-line preamps like Fethead / Cloudlifter?
Could you do a review of the Mic Part’s DIY stuff? They make bold claims about the viability of modifying a cheap mic to sound like a Neumann U87 or other classic mics.
Hello I have a simple question what is the best mike SAMSON C01U VS SAMSON C01U PRO And I want to know what is the difference between them I want to know and thank you very much❤
Sounds great for voice over! I bet a pair would be great for drum overheads. The mount was disappointing though. I'd be cool with paying a little more if it came with it's own basket style shock mount.
Hey Bandrew! Great review. Few unrelated questions - When you receive a mic from a vendor for the sake of review, do you get to keep it? If so, what do you end up doing with them all? If you could give a ballpark number to the amount of microphones you currently own, what would that be? Genuinely curious.
In most cases when someone recieves a sample for review they either have to send it back or they have the option to buy it. Especially with higher priced stuff. In some cases you get to keep the item depending on the circumstances. Like maybe if its a paid review, they have a say in what you publish or possibly if the review requires taking the item apart or destroying it. And sometimes it will simply depend on the company and how much they value your review. My guess would be in his case he has the option to buy them possibly at a lower price. Also keep in mind some companies use these as "review samples" and will send them out to multiple people. As in you review it, send it back and they send it to another reviewer. A lot of times you will see independant and unbiased reviewers buy most of their product because they are also testing the quality control of actual shipped consumer products. They don't want a cherry picked sample from the manufacturer that might be better than what you can actually buy. And this way the company has no say in what you publish about their product since you bought it. One thing you can do if the company is sending you products and you don't like it is simply refuse to publish the review rather than say something bad about it. This is why a lot of reviewer always have good things to say about products. They simply dont' talk about the stuff that was bad.
I was surprised about the low end and the warm tone of the J Z. It sounds a bit like a tube mic. The NT1 has a little bit more of a boxy low end. I recon that would be fine if you were recording vocals as most of the low gets cut anyways to avoid conflict with the instruments.
Hay podcastage, I am one of your youtube subscribers. Could you please make a review for Audio-Technica ATM 710 hand held condenser microphone and as usual make comparison against the ones you have already reviewed. I am really confused with its phantom power requirement that says 11-52v typical. Does this microphone works with my audio interface Behringer u-phoria umc 202hd that provides only 48v phantom power. I am planning to pick this microphone hoping it is more sensetive than others.please make a review for me. I have checked all over youtube and found no one who made review for it. So please be the first mover. Thank you so much in advance.
Microphones with so extreme a LF boost can be difficult to use and often suffer in sales. I hope they reconsider that aspect of what otherwise is an impressive piece.
I was looking through their other mics, and their other offerings are significantly more neutral. Hope to test them out in the future the V67 and I think V47 are fascinating to me.
Podcastage I was completely unaware of this company until now. They clearly know what they’re doing. Other than than bass, I thought the mic sounded great on everything you tried. When you look back at a history of bass-boosted mics of all types, they are mostly unsuccessful for a reason. Lots of sources have excess energy there to start with, many users operate well within the proximity range, and the end result is the mic is difficult to use. Overloaded preamps are common and the mic gets the blame.
Sir I am from India, i follow your channel very good job u r doing.. , i am struggling to find a right microphone for me(large diaphragm condenser) T HAVE A MODERATELY DEEP WARM VOICE WITH AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF LOW END AND LOW MID IN MY VOICE WHILE RECITING SOMETHING(resembles to your voice to a large extent) AND WHILE SINGING I FIND MY VOICE TO BE SOFT A BIT HIGH BOOSTED FOR CERTAIN SONGS i so I need a mic which has an ample amount of Body in the low and some smooth airy in the high not harsh sounding . I have primarily shortlisted three mics sE 2200(Transformer balanced warm sounding), Sontronics stc 20 and lewitt 440 pure. Please help me to decide a balanced and true sounding mic with no or minimum coloratian to the original signal and if u have any suggestions apart from the above mentioned 3 mics then please feel free to give me.. Hello Podcastage, been following you for sa year, love your videos, but the more I watch the more its confusing, i mean how one Good mic vs another Good mic, which one to buy? Can you please help me choose a microphone from my list? Im not from USA so prices are higher here and that includes importing from USA with INT Shipping and Import Taxes, but some mics [Lewitt brand] have almost the same local price as in USA. For streaming and making videos connected to goXLR: Rode Procaster for 240$ [Local price] Golden Age Project D2 for 265$ [US Import] MXL BCD-1 for 265$ [US Import] King Bee KIT for 245$ [US Import] Lewitt LCT 440 Pure KIT for 285$ [Local price] I mentioned the price, but I more care about the quality I also have speech disorder, stammering/stutter so my guess i need more sensitive to hear me when im stuck on words or maybe not, i dont know.
Rumor has it that some JZ mics are kissed by JayZ himself, you get a certificate of smooch with your order (and some say that the JZ kissed mics ad +5db of clean gain)
I do quite like the sound and it's a very nice looking mic, but those plosives and no shock mount are kinda off-putting. It's stick with my Rode NT1 for now.
Hey, any chance you could do an Audition tutorial on how to process vocals for spoken words and voiceovers like what you do for your videos' audio? TIA :)
No comparison with the TLM 103 or U87? For shame, sir! For shame! Seriously though, I feel like it's missing something at the top. Maybe for some voices it would be perfect but I think this sounds vaguely artificial for you, maybe because I'm already familiar with your voice on brighter mics. I could definitely see it as a great singing mic with the right voice. For this comparison, my preferences would go Austrian Audio, CAD, 102, JZ, Rode, Stellar, AT. I need to listen through a few more times to refine the order but at least the first two are pretty firmly in their positions.
I wonder why are you testing this against the Focusrite and not with the UA gear? Any specific reason? Like closer to what every normal podcaster has available?

Sounds great for voice over! I bet a pair would be great for drum overheads. The mount was disappointing though. I'd be cool with paying a little more if it came with it's own basket style shock mount.
Great interview as usual! Your energy seems a little lower than usual. Hope you are well. Peace and guidance brother
hi . FiiO A1 Silver Portable Headphone Amp A1 + Behringer HPX2000 Headphones High-Definition DJ Headphones . are they good budget combo ?
It would be sick if you could do a video on the MTP 550 DM and MTP 440 DM. love ur videos btw, thanks
The ribbon-like characteristic is fantastic
That's what people say about the Heil PR30.
You've reviewed that one... right?
No?
New sub! Love your humour! Keep it up!!
Thanks so much man. That means a lot.
Podcastage 🙏🙏
Great review!
Would you please do a review of Samson C02 mics?
Maaaaaan... this mic sounds GOOD.
Paul Mohr Great response, thanks!
Great comparisons. I thought the TLM102 just sounds more natural with a slightly better top end.
Could you please make a review about the Slate Digital ML1, in my opinion it's a pretty interesting mic.
ps: nice video as always :)
Ha! I just got a ML2 it’s hard to run the plug ins with the ilok3 smh
The CAD E100S sounded frankly as good or better. The AT2020 was disappointing in comparison
I was surprised about the low end and the warm tone of the J Z. It sounds a bit like a tube mic. The NT1 has a little bit more of a boxy low end. I recon that would be fine if you were recording vocals as most of the low gets cut anyways to avoid conflict with the instruments.
Very nice specs, but iso mounting not even considered, any chance that Lewitt could fit?
Well done review! 👍
Thanks bro you do an excellent job..... recently I been thinking about buying a mic, can you do a review a Alctron mc001. Thanks for the help.
Hay podcastage,
I am one of your youtube subscribers.
True.
SADW keys... I needed that.
That CAD E100s sound fantastic here for voiceover. I never got one coz I don't like it for anything else but might reconsider.
Sounds best compared to all other mics.Love the low end punch.Btw which is the best JZ mic out there? Anybody can answered. Thanks
Thanks for this!
Podcastage you need to review the blue kiwi
Can you get your hands on a Studio Projects C1 mk2? Would be a good review:)
presentation...well done, thank you
I hear "doobly doo" and I instantly upvote.
Sir I am from India, i follow your channel very good job u r doing.. , i am struggling to find a
right microphone for me(large diaphragm
condenser)
T HAVE A MODERATELY DEEP WARM
VOICE WITH AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF
LOW END AND LOW MID IN MY VOICE
WHILE RECITING SOMETHING(resembles
to your voice to a large extent) AND
WHILE SINGING I FIND MY VOICE TO BE
SOFT A BIT HIGH BOOSTED FOR CERTAIN
SONGS i so I need a mic which has an
ample amount of Body in the low and
some smooth airy in the high not harsh
sounding . I have primarily shortlisted three
mics sE 2200(Transformer balanced warm
sounding), Sontronics stc 20 and lewitt
440 pure.
Please help me to decide a balanced and
true sounding mic with no or minimum
coloratian to the original signal
and if u
have any suggestions apart from the above
mentioned 3 mics then please feel free to give me..
One last thing do transformer balanced mics helps to get good bodied warm and balanced sounds? Thanks in Advance Gentleman..💐💐🙏🙏☺️☺️
For streaming and making videos connected to goXLR:
Rode Procaster for 240$ [Local price]
Golden Age Project D2 for 265$ [US Import]
MXL BCD-1 for 265$ [US Import]
King Bee KIT for 245$ [US Import]
Lewitt LCT 440 Pure KIT for 285$ [Local price]
I mentioned the price, but I more care about the quality I also have speech disorder, stammering/stutter so my guess i need more sensitive to hear me when im stuck on words or maybe not, i dont know.
Hi, would you recommend the NT1 over the MK4?
Rumor has it that some JZ mics are kissed by JayZ himself, you get a certificate of smooch with your order (and some say that the JZ kissed mics ad +5db of clean gain)
i'd love to hear this compared to the Beyerdynamic M160 & EV RE20 :)
I do quite like the sound and it's a very nice looking mic, but those plosives and no shock mount are kinda off-putting. It's stick with my Rode NT1 for now.
If you and I made a mic that looked like a cute kittycat, we’d make a fortune.
I finally got the chapter markers on this video!
Hey, any chance you could do an Audition tutorial on how to process vocals for spoken words and voiceovers like what you do for your videos' audio? TIA :)
he has done that before. he uses logic.
Could you do a review for MXL 190?
I saw it on amazon, seems cool but only few information on the internet.
Thank you so much for all great videos , Please we need review about this microphone BOYA BY-M1000 Condenser Microphone
It would have to sound pretty good for what they ask for price-wise, I know little though, only just getting in to mics and such things myself.
You should've used the U87 instead of the TLM 102. You said you wanted to get your money's worth out of it ;)
I wonder why are you testing this against the Focusrite and not with the UA gear? Any specific reason? Like closer to what every normal podcaster has available?

I'm surprised they didn't send you one of their excellent pop filters.
💯
sounds great
Please, make a review of the Maono AU-A04TR, it would be cool!!
