This is my favourite faction to play in the Macedonian Wars campaign where you're up against Macedon as the underdog. Pergamon is outmatched in Pikes and Cavalry so you really need to focus on utilising your flexibility with Spearmen, Peltasts and Swordsmen to win the day.
Great jobs on your vids man. I haven't played this game in years and have recently decided to go back and give DEI a try. Since I'm rusty and DEI fundamentally transforms the game, your guides have been a real boon and helped me get a better feel for each faction's strengths and weaknesses. It's a lot harder getting to empire in DEI I've noticed trying to get there with Rome atm. I'm hoping I'll be an empire by the time I get imperial legions.
Definitely have to watch the pop at the start of a campaign (especially if you're playing on hard), one or two bad engagements and your professional army will be completely crippled without hope of resupply. It's easy to get into drawn out wars of attrition when you get into the hills just to your east as well and next thing you know you're running levy armies lol. Hoplites are a better rounded/all rounder unit to phalangists imo. They're more resilient to flanking, ranged attacks and other battlefield shenanigans while doing okay if you need to rush some infantry into a flank or weird position. They're also a safer bet when it comes to the Rome 2 dodgy path finding that spear/pike units have, you really have to babysit the pikemen to make sure they don't turn and completely ruin your front line and when they inevitably do make some weird movement that exposes their flank, they're a lot harder to pull back into formation and will drop much quicker than hoplites. Nothing beats a pike unit one on one front on but the hoplite is more versatile. If we're talking pure defense especially in towns, then pike all the way. Light hoplite are great for mobile cav defense, especially at the start where counter cav can be a bit too expensive to maintain, 4 speed on something that can poke a hole in some cav is pretty sweet. Pergamon is one of my fav factions, they have an interesting starting position and varied roster, what's not to like! The new art is great as well, although I will say I miss the completely silver silver shields! Massalia is like the western version of them in that it's an interesting spot to start.
Thanks for you input regarding hoplites and pikes mate! Definitely something to think about in the hoplite vs pike debate! Pergamon is definitely a great faction, I like to think of Massalia as being their distant cousins. Although apparently Massalia will be seeing somewhat of a rework by the DeI team in the future.

On the question of pikes vs. hoplites, I think hoplites are supposed to be worse at dealing damage and holding against melee units, but better at withstanding missile fire, and I definitely notice that e.g. the bronze shields get shredded by javelins much faster then hoplites seem to.
Thanks for looking into those slingers mate! I was really confused by them lol. And your definitely right about the hoplites/pikes debate. I personally use Pikes as the main front and Hoplites on the flanks. They are a lot more mobile so you can react to flanking units a lot better, but also flank with them yourself and obliterate those units attacking the pikes. For sieges they can also absorb a bit of the missiles, which would devistate the pikemen.
Not a bad tactic at all, since checking out some of these older overviews I've heard similar strategies for using hoplites instead of pikes. Pikes still easily will win in a head to head engagement but hoplites certainly have their uses.

How do Greek normal/city state specific thorax swordsmen fare against normal Legionaries and how do elite versions of Legionaries perform against elite Thorakites?
Thorax swordsmen I believe are usually slightly better than Legionaries in attack/defense, although their stamina wouldn't be as good and their armor might not be as good but I can't say for certain. The main difference is Legionaries come from the easy to maintain 3rd social class pop while Thorax units come from the elite social class of Greeks.
@@longyu9336 That's probably worthy of a video on its own to be honest man. But off the top of my head, it would be almost totally equal. IF you don't take into account campaign aspects such as population class and stuff then I'd say their almost equal with the Greeks slightly being ahead with melee attack.
If you mean the lighting itself its a bit darker than normal because it is Winter in this video for the campaign section. In addition, I also use a few different visual mods along with a Reshade preset I've made recently. Mods used are in the description if you want to check them out, I hope this helps! :)
Thanks mate! I appreciate the suggestion. I think next will be an Iberian faction but then our next barbarian faction will be Galatia or Arverni I reckon :)
Nothing wrong with that to be honest mate. I've actually lost at least 1 or 2 campaigns as Rome. Although that was when I used to play with submods that made the campaign way harder than normal. I think Rome is a easy faction to BUT they also can easily be finished off quickly if you get unlucky with the ai declaring war on you all at once while your busy elsewhere like say in Syracuse or southern Italy. For the average player like me I think Rome is surprisingly losable, but generally speaking it is also one of the most powerful factions in game too. You just have to weather through the early hordes of barbarians lol :D
No not yet mate, currently editing an Iberian overview and then we will probably do the Mauryans. However if people are interested we can always check out the Kartli
Purely look wise I'd say it would be roughly like this: Hellenic/Greeks>=Imperial Romans>Continental Celtics>Early Romans>British Celtics>Germanic tribes. Seriously, why are Germanic units displayed as this primitive in the Game?
I could almost agree with that list although I'd put the Romans higher but I'm a fanboy :D I don't think the Germans are toooo bad considering they have pretty good progression on display. Early tier units are mostly in rags but elite units look pretty badass.

@@Immersaholic What about elite or Veteran legionaries? How does the Roman real elite stack up against Greek elite soldiers?
@@longyu9336 That's probably worthy of a video on its own to be honest man. But off the top of my head, it would be almost totally equal. IF you don't take into account campaign aspects such as population class and stuff then I'd say their almost equal with the Greeks slightly being ahead with melee attack.
@@Immersaholic Oh yes, please do unit testing
What's a 10/10 campaign for you?
I'm not really sure if there is one in this game, at least not for normal difficulty.
Thank you for this one
Thank you for watching! :)
hey man, just wondering what you use to make the campaign map dark
If you mean the lighting itself its a bit darker than normal because it is Winter in this video for the campaign section. In addition, I also use a few different visual mods along with a Reshade preset I've made recently.
Mods used are in the description if you want to check them out, I hope this helps! :)
@@Immersaholic thanks alot man
@@jru7th No worries champ!
You know my suggestion, Galatia in Asia or Arverni for that thicc Gallic Kingdom
Good overview also👍
Thanks mate! I appreciate the suggestion. I think next will be an Iberian faction but then our next barbarian faction will be Galatia or Arverni I reckon :)
good job sir!
Thanks mate!
not sure if they are really barbaric but could you cover the indians or edetani?
I've been wanting to do an Iberian tribe for a while so Edetani will certainly be up for consideration! Thanks for the suggestion :)
How do I unlock Pergamon?
You need to buy the Black sea faction DLC
@@Immersaholic ahhh...thank you, mate.
I struggle with rome believe it or not.
Have you done Kartli yet? 👌
I could almost agree with that list although I'd put the Romans higher but I'm a fanboy :D
I don't think the Germans are toooo bad considering they have pretty good progression on display. Early tier units are mostly in rags but elite units look pretty badass.
Nervii please
Thanks for the suggestion! They just received a BIG cultural change too!
